Review of Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Joint Australian/

New Zealand Standards are subject to periodic review and are kept up to date by the
issue of amendments or new editions as necessary. It is important therefore that
Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edition, and any
amendments thereto.
Full details of all Joint Standards and related publications will be found in the
Standards Australia and Standards New Zealand Catalogue of Publications; this
information is supplemented each month by the magazines ‘The Australian Standard’
and ‘Standards New Zealand’, which subscribing members receive, and which give
details of new publications, new editions and amendments, and of withdrawn
Standards.
Suggestions for improvements to Joint Standards, addressed to the head office of either
Standards Australia or Standards New Zealand, are welcomed. Notification of any
inaccuracy or ambiguity found in a Joint Australian/New Zealand Standard should be
made without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action
taken.

PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Joint Standards Australia / Standards New Zealand
Committee TE/3 on Electromagnetic Interference with input from Subcommittee AV/3/3
on Audiology as one of a series of Standards intended to facilitate the control of
electromagnetic emissions and immunity of electrical and electronic equipment.
It specifically deals with immunity levels for hearing aids with acoustic outputs. This
requirement arises from the evidence that a number of electromagnetic emitters which
may operate in the vicinity of hearing aids interact with them, resulting in acoustic
interference to the hearing aid user.
Currently no international Standard is in place to fulfil this requirement. The Committee
proceeded with this publication on the basis that the widespread introduction of personal
radiocommunication systems using amplitude modulation of the carrier indicates a need

for specification and standardized methods of measurement. It is the intention of the

Committee to review this Standard as soon as an international Standard becomes available
with a view to adopting the international version.
This Standard describes immunity requirements; methods of setting up the hearing aid and
the radiofrequency fields; as well as describing how the controls of the hearing aid should
be set and how the output should be measured.
At the time of publication, the referenced editions indicated in this Standard were valid.
All normative documents are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this
Standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions
of the normative documents. Members of IEC and ISO maintain registers of currently
valid normative documents.

The Standard applies to hearing aids delivering acoustic outputs and includes those
worn —
(a) behind the ear (BTE);
(b) in the ear (ITE); and
(c) on the body;
and includes hearing aids fitted with induction pick-up coils.
