Structural steels
In mechanical engineering applications, the heavy support elements are often made of structural steel.
Last update: 2012-8-1

Properties
Structural steels are carbon-manganese steels with guaranteed minimum mechanical properties (yield strength and tensile strength) and with satisfactory ductility, and are
suitable for most common applications. They are readily available from distributors in the most common forms and dimensions.

Delivery conditions proposed: AR (as rolled) or N (normalised) for thicknesses below 50 mm, normalising treatment may be replaced by a normalising rolling process.

Advantages
Structural steels offer good weldability with all conventional welding processes. In most cases pre- or post-heat treatment is not necessary. In addition to their excellent
mechanical properties, structural steels have satisfactory toughness values.

Applications
Structural steels are mainly used in the building industry and in mechanical engineering. Applications include building components, containers, storage tanks and roll formed
profiles.

Recommendations for use

Options available (after prior agreement):

Chemical adjustment to improve CEV or to modify copper content

Transversal impact test
Improved deformation properties perpendicular to the surface of the product as per EN 10164 (Z test) (for J2, J2+N, K2, K2+N grades)
Ultrasonic testing
Suitability for cold forming (option 11)
