Follow these steps to create a chart like the one above: Step 1: Assign each course requirement to a section in the chart along with each requirement value (column 1) and mark break down values. The values represent the weight of each course requirement portion towards your final mark (column 2). Now write down the mark received out of the total possible mark to be earned for each course requirement (column 3). Step 2: Use a calculator to convert each of your marks into a percentage. Do this by dividing the mark you received by the total mark (what it is out of) and multiply by 100%. Example: Assignment Mark: 42/60 100% = 70% Midterm I Mark: 26/30 100% = 80% (column 4) Step 3: Next, you need to find the number of points you have gained for each portion of the course (column 5). You do this by taking the mark breakdown value and multiply each by the percentage you calculated in the previous step (column 4). Example: Assignment Mark: 10 70% = 10 0.7 = 7/10 The denominator is the mark breakdown value **Note: If you use a calculator, either make sure you include the percent sign in your calculation or change the percentage to a decimal by dividing the percentage by 100%. Example: 70%/100% = 0.7 Step 4: Now you need to add all of the calculated points (numerators) together to get the total points values (column 6). Example: 11 + 7 + 8 + 13 + 11 = 50 Next, add the total course requirement value (denominators) you have earned before the exam. Example: 15 + 10 + 10 + 15 + 15 = 65 Then, if you want to determine what your mark is without your final exam, divide the total number of points (numerators) earned by the total course requirement values (denominator). Example: Mark going into exam without exam mark: 50/65 100%= 77% Step 5: In order to get the mark you want to accomplish, you need to find out the mark you need on your final exam. You do this by subtracting your total number of points from the percentage you wish to receive. Example: The student wants to achieve an 80% in the course. 80 (grade goal) 50 (points earned) = 30 (points required on final) You then divide that number of points you require on the final exam by the final exam value and multiply by 100% to calculate the percentage you need in order to get the desired mark. Example: 30/35(exam course work value) 100% = 86% Therefore, you would need an 86% on the final exam in order to get an 80% in the course. **Note: If you are trying to achieve a certain GPA or letter grade, then you need to look at the UOIT GPA chart and determine the desired percentage that correlates. Since the percentages are ranges, choose a percentage that falls in between the range.
