How to create a fair to good quality DVDRip?

Required software:
1. DVD Decrypter (to save videos to the HDD) from www.dvddecrypter.com
2. Clone.ad’s avi.net (required to convert the MPEG2 DVD Video file to DivX or Xvid AVIs with MP3 Audio)
a. AVISynth( used by avi.net to run the scripts for compression)
b. VOBSub (useful for enabling subtitle related features used by avi.net)
c. DivX 6.8 codec or more (available for free at: www.divx.com. Please google for other download sources)
OR
d. Xvid 1.3 codec or more (available for free on the web. Please google)
3. VirtualDub 1.8.7 or more recent (www.virtualdub.org)

NOTE: The codecs need to be installed. Using a K-Lite codec pack or as bundled with another player like VLC is not
enough.

This is standard procedure for a DVDRip from a Video DVD. A Data DVD can just be copy pasted. If you have the .VOB
files from the DVD then you will have to follow a variation of the procedure which is mentioned as step 3. Please read
through the file once before starting and then take it step-by-step.

Step 1: Ripping the .VOB files as one file (which is why we don’t do a simple copy-paste
from the DVD)
When you power up DVD Decrypter to rip the DVD it will use a default setting which we will need to change so as to
ease the process. The default settings are as captured below:

As shown in this image, change the Mode to IFO. This allows for selecting only select files in batches (e.g. VTS_01_1.VOB,
VTS_01_2.VOB etc.) as detailed in the IFO files on the disk. Another default setting will save the files in various files of
size of 1GB. We can change that (NOTE: this is safe only for File systems other than FAT32 such as NTFS which allow files
more than 4 GB to be stored) by changing the settings in the Tools Menu’s Settings option which gives us a screen as:

In the IFO Mode tab change the File Splitting option’s value from 1GB (or as selected by default) to None. This will allow
the saving of the file as one large file. For a DVD movie this is about 4.5GB if it is of very good quality. Go back to the

main screen by clicking OK after making the changes. Once you click the icon the software will start saving
the file to your harddisk displaying the screen as shown below.

While extracting the file, if the disk is protected then there will be alerts showing errors while copying. These are
expected as it is a way of protecting the disk against piracy. Please Select “ignore” in the error screens.

Knowing that this tool may be used for extracting corrupt files the makers of DVD decrypt have provided the option
that on the fifth error there will be an additional box which will ask if all subsequent errors should also be ignored.
Please select OK on this or face the boredom of clicking ignore for another 5-6 times.

Please repeat the extraction for the various movies if the DVD is a multi movie DVD. Usually DVD Decrypter selects the
longest file for extraction by default.

These errors may also be due to scratches on your disk (another reason why we have refrained from wasting time with
a simple copy-paste of the files)

On completion it will show the following alert.

Congratulations! Now you have a neatly extracted MPEG2 format .vob file on your hard disk which is suitable for
compression to an AVI.

Step 2: Compressing the DVD video extract i.e. the .vob file to a 700MB avi.
Before using avi.net let us take a look at the format of the output and input files. Any video media file has video encoded
in one format for digital storage and audio stored in another format. The twain are interleaved as per the conventions of
the format used. In AVI’s we have the flexibility of interleaving video and audio coded in forms suitable for the user.
Usually the format used by recent DVD players which sport DivX video playback is Video encoded in DivX format and
audio encoded in the mp3 format. This is the output format for avi.net.

NOTE: compressing the MPEG 2 video to avi takes a truckload of time no matter which tool you use. Having tested this
tool against many other DVD Rippers I have realized that this is a very robust process albeit time consuming. So as to
reduce the time consumptive nature you can create a list of all the files that need to be saved and then start the
compression of all. This is detailed later on so please read this whole file and then get to work.

When you launch avi.net there are 2 tabs title input.FILE and avi.OPTIONS. These are used to enter the file input and
output details and the avi options. To start off click the In button. This will open a file selection box as seen below.

Select the input .VOB file which you had just ripped and click Open the following screen will show up.

What happens now is important for the process. A directory containing relevant audio and video details is created of the
.VOB file selected. This process is called indexing of the file. After indexing the video will start playing with no option to
pause it. (Please mute the audio if you are leaving the system at this time as it takes time to index a large movie and the
playback will be at the system volume.) The tab will automatically switch to the av.OPTIONS tab and the movie will start
playing.

Experiment with these till the video quality is suitable. The first option you select is the size of the output file. If you are
experimenting with the compression settings then do uncheck the option to remove .TEMP files and folder.

Once you are done with the compression settings return to the input.FILE tab and click OUT. As shown in the shot below
you can now select the output AVI file’s location and name.

DON’T click START yet. Click ADD to add the file to a list and then click IN again to select the next file to compress as
shown below.

Once you have the list done and the scene is as below, now’s the time to click the START button and…

Get things started as shown below:

Once you’ve started the wheels turning you can right-click the black area and select “Minimize to Tray” from the menu.

The application tucks into the system tray and you can get back to your work. Click it to bring back the avi.net window
and check if the files are made.

Speed of compression slows down if you are watching DivX movies while compressing. It will abort the process if you are
using Xvid. For some reason the Xvid codec didn’t allow multi-tasking on my system.

Step 3: If you have already copied the files to your hard disk and returned the DVD
thus disallowing usage of the DVD Decrypter.
Compress each of the VOB files with avi.net by queuing them up as shown above and compressing them.

Check: When setting the compression settings, in File Size select custom and set the size to a proportionate size for
eg. If the file sizes are 1 GB, 1 GB and 200 MB then set the sizes for the files as 320MB, 320MB and 65MB.

Then you can join the AVI files using VirtualDub by:

Now the file can be played in any media player although I’d recommend the K-Lite Mega codec Pack for playing the
output format.
