THE PATHFINDER

Little Valley United Methodist Church 109 Court Street, PO Box 221 Little Valley, NY 14755 (716) 938-6150 Joseph Pascoe, Pastor Office Hours: Monday Friday 9:00-12:00 Monthly Newsletter August 2012
Hello friends, I once did a funeral for a man whose family shared with me that his life motto was that there were two types of people in the world, ones that were his friends, and ones who didn't know they were his friends yet. Unbelievable! Imagine if we treated everyone we came into contact with as our friends......would this world look the way it does today? Over the next several months I want to look at how we (Christian's) can change the world around us. If you recall last month I referenced the terrible abuse of the bus monitor Karen Klein, if nothing else this occurrence, which takes place far too often, has brought to the forefront the need in our world for something greater. We are going to walk systematically through a process that will allow us to be the change Christ called us to be. The first step in seeking a change is coming to the realization that there is indeed a need for change. We live in a culture that has been so focused on pleasing ourselves that we have become desensitized to the issues that are far too real around us. Dr. Joy Moore shared during Family Bible Camp some of the problems with this desensitization and she referenced the book and movie, "The Hunger Games". In that reference she concluded that we have been so desensitized, that children killing children has become acceptable for us to watch and read as entertainment. Now Hollywood has done a great job in helping us to please ourselves through visual entertainment and through that entertainment isn't it possible that we are drifting further and further from whom it is that God intended and created us to be. That example may be a little radical for you and you might be thinking to yourself there is no way I would enjoy watching that. While that may be true, check out what your children, grandchildren, and friends are reading and watching! Another example is found in the book that is at the top of the best sellers list, 50 Shades of Grey by: E.L James. This book full of passion, covered in lustful desires, and as some readers say is porn without the visual images, is leading the way with our 20-40 something's women. We have allowed ourselves to believe that if we aren't engaging in something physically that it is ok. As a culture we are entertaining ourselves so much that our first thought is about me and my desires. With that mind set, we are not engaging in relationships like Jesus both taught and practiced. This is nothing new for Christ followers though; Jesus' ministry was packed with dealing with and challenging people who were engulfed in sin and the world around them. He lived and ministered through the Greco-Roman world offering hope to all who would listen to Him, and those that did listen were changed forever. John 6:26-27 Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal. Jesus came offering redemption and fulfillment to a broken people who were constantly searching for something. Yes there is a serious problem in the world around us, and that problem is far too close to home, but God raised Jesus Christ from the dead and in that resurrection we have a hope. We have the hope that it is through his grace that we can love all people everywhere and that we can offer them something all the other things are not capable of offering. It is that grace of Jesus Christ that will enable us to look at people in two categories......friends.....and those who don't know we are friends yet. Will you join me in being the change the world so desperately needs? Peace, Pastor Joe I am always looking for dialogue around any topic that has been written or email pastorjoe@littlevalleyumc.org

EMERGENCY FOOD BANK

The Little Valley Ministerial Group is currently sponsoring a Food Bank which is being housed at the First Congregational Church. We're trying to serve right now on an emergency basis, and is available to anyone who resides within the boundaries of the Cattaraugus - Little Valley School District. There are no income guidelines to meet - we're just trying to fill a need in the community. Pastor Sue is at the church on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and may be reached at the church 938-6675. She may be contacted any other time at 640-4523. We'll arrange to have someone at the church to assist those in need. We need help from the participating churches to help supply food, as well as to get the word out to those who are in need. We need the following items - canned goods (soups, stew, fruit, tuna, meat, main dishes), pastas, cereals, juices, powdered milk. The items may be brought directly to First Congregational Church on Tuesday or Thursday, or brought to your church and Pastor Joe will make arrangements to get the items to us. Thanks for your support in our endeavor to be the compassion of Christ to those who need Him most. Pastor Sue Fish First Congregational Church
