SECTOR - GENERAL OVERVEW Turkey is a country with a population of 74 million and has a surface area of 77 million hectare. 1/3 of its area, this means the cultvated land is around 26.5 million hectares as per 2004. In one way t means that Turkey is one of the few countries of the world which are self-sufficient in food. Farming is the occupation of the majority of Turkish people, In spte of the share of industry and services are raising constantly. Turkey is one of the few self-sustaining countries in the world in terms of food. Turkey's fertile soil, adeguate climate, and abundant rainfall permit growing almost any kinds of crops. The farming is conducted in all of the regions in Turkey Turkeys food industry is much better developed than that of the neighboring countries. Given these factors, the country is one of the biggest exporters of agricultural products in the Eastern Europe, Middle East and North Africa (EMEA) area, while its balance of trade is importantly posititive. Turkey is growing with a rising income. This makes Turkey one of the largest markets

in its region. .Then such a big farming sector has resulted in a strong agricultural machinery sector in Turkey. The huge farming sector in Turkey has contributed to the formation of a powerful agricultural machinery sector. The agricultural machinery manufacture has two primary categories: tractors and agricultural machinery. All of the farming machinery and nearly all of the tractors fabricated in the sector are used incoming farming production activities (a very small percentage of tractors are used in other activities, mostly in the construction sector). Turkish agricultural machinery industry is supposed to become a main branch of Turkish machinery sector by growing in capacity, quality and product range. At present, the product range of Turkish agricultural machinery industry consists of the following: farm tractors;engined singleaxe hoes; engined mower machines; soil preparing/earth moving and seed bed preparing machinery and equipment; seed drilling, sowing, seeding, transplanting machinery and equipment; manuring machines; plant protection and irrigation/sprinkling tools and equipment; harvesting/reaping machines; machinery for threshing, drying,throwing,cleaning, classifying, processing etc.; machinery and equipment for animal products; other machinery and equipment for field and garden agricultural production . The farming manufacture is consisted of about 1000 Producers nationwide. Nearly 225 manufacturers are organized under TARMAKBR (Turkish Association of Agricultural Machinery and Equipment Manufacturers). Companies fabricating farming machinery and equipment except tractors are generally small and medium size companies. The sector employs about 15,000 workers. Turkish agricultural machinery manufacture mostly fulfills the domestic requirement and exports the surplusage. Exports in the sector show a growing trend between 2005 and 2008. The export value of agricultural machinery, spare parts, agricultural tractors and trailers was US$ 313 million in 2009. Quality is a different goal for the sector, together with exports which it certainly sustains. Agricultural machinery Producers are aware of the importance of the ISO series total quality certificates. Most of the producers are carrying on programs for getting these certificates. At the beginning of 2002, it became necessary to fulfil CE Mark Necessities in order to sell products in Turkish national market. The primary productions exported are: tractors, parts and components of harvesting, threshing machines, other thresher machines, other poultry keeping machines, machines for preparing animal feeds, other harvesting machines, harrows, ploughs, parts and components of other machines for fields, gardens, forestry, bee keeping and milking.

Products of Turkish farming machinery manufacture are exported to a large scope of countries in the world. Major export markets are Morocco, Iran, Iraq, Bulgaria, France and Italy in farming machinery; the USA, Morocco, Iraq, Australia and Mexico in tractors.
