1 Calculations According to EN81

This document explains the basics of the calculation of elevators in LIFTdesigner. It also shows possible solutions that can be necessary to fixing reoccurring calculation errors. 1.1 EN81

European norm for the construction and installation of traction and hydraulic elevators.

Important information:
We cannot guarantee that all calculation results in LIFTdesigner are according to EN81 will be 100% correct, especially regarding to the user defined components as well as for the standard components, if the layout and size does not match to the parts that are used later on for the construction of the elevator.

1.2

Check the Main Project data

Before you run the calculation of the elevator project, you should first check whether all relevant information for the elevator was entered correctly and is complete. Relevant information is the shaft and cab data for example as well as the weights. This information can be edited in the Main project data... dialog (Calculation Main project data). If you run the calculation on the basis of wrong information, you will receive invalid calculation results.

2 Calculation
The term calculation refers to all technical calculations and geometric verifications that are necessary for the planning and construction of the elevator. The approach to this subject is systematically.

2.1.1 Shaft head and Shaft pit

The shaft calculation in general refers to the verification of the shaft dimensions, shaft pit strength and refuge spaces (positioning in the shaft pit and on the car roof as well as the refuge space size).

2.1.2 Dialog Shaft head and Shaft pit

2.1.3 Refuge Space

In the shaft dialog, there is an option for automatic positioning of the refuge spaces, for the refuge space on the car roof as well as for the refuge space in the shaft pit. By using the Search for position buttons, the refuge spaces will be positioned automatically according to the EN81 rules. If it isnt possible to find the proper position automatically, you will need to position the corresponding refuge space manually in the drawing. The refuge space for the power receiving box will not be checked in the calculation. The option for the automatic positioning of the refuge space:

2.2.2 Changing the car size

Changing the car size subsequently can influence the current selection of the guide rails, the dimensions in the shaft head / shaft pit and the refuge spaces in a negative way. It may become necessary to exchange the guide rails or to re-edit the shaft dimensions. 2.3 Guide rail Calculation

The LIFTdesigner guide rail calculation allows you to perform a complete calculation according to EN81, appendix G, requiring only few parameters in the beginning. Important: The calculation of guide rail stress with safety gear and normal operation considers all distributions of the payload inside the car, regardless whether it is a deep or wide car.

2.3.1 Guide rails

The dialogue for the guide rail calculation can be accessed via the menu bar Calculation Guide Rails... or alternatively in the drawing by clicking on one of the guide rails and then clicking on the Calculation Start calculation... in the Properties docking window. item

Type of Guiding:

If you do not use manufacturer specific components, you can select between sliding and roller guides. Otherwise, the text in the box appears in gray. If you wish to change the type of guiding anyway, you should do it using the normal LIFTdesigner methods. According to EN81, the type of guiding does not have any influence to the guide rail calculation. Due to high values of flange bending at the L-type car frames, the guide rail calculation module offers an alternative calculation, if sliding guide shoes are used. In such case, the length of the guide shoe is an important parameter. Safety Gear:

If you do not use manufacturer specific components, you can select another type of safety gear. Otherwise, the text in the box appears in gray. If you wish to change the safety gear type anyway, you should do it using the normal LIFTdesigner methods. If you change the type of safety gear within the guide rail calculation dialog box, the geometry will not change since the "Common Components" safety gear will not be visualized. You only can change the type and impact factor.

Other material data:

Rail flange bending::

Guide rail, user defined: After having switched to "user defined", you are able to enter other geometric and mechanic properties for the chosen guide rail.

Now the dialog box, which offers the guide rail selection, shows the additional designation "user defined". You may assign St 37, St 44 and St 52 as basic guide rail material. The material data is shown below. The kind of manufacturing (cold drawn or machined) changes the elongation of the material. So you will obtain other admissible limits for normal strain (Sigm(perm., normal) and for safety gear operation (Sigm(perm., emerg.). These limits are shown below. Important: The selection of another guide rail overwrites all user-defined modifications. Switching to Other Material data: If tensile strength and elongation values of the selectable materials do not correspond to the material of the desired guide rail, you can activate the possibility of entering other material data. See the new limits of guide rail strain in the lower part of this dialog.

__________________________________________________________________
Calculations according to EN81 DigiPara GmbH

18 1BCalculation Calculation of the Bending of the Guide rail Flange: By default this calculation is carried out according to EN81. You can use an extended calculation for car guides (not for counterweight guides) and sliding guide shoes. In this case, the length of the sliding guide shoe, the distance between the guide rail foot and the middle of the running surface as lever influence the calculation: Sigm(Fgs) = F(x) * r * 6 / (L(gs) * c^2)) Bigger guide shoes and bigger values of F(x) amount to smaller values of the stress of bending of the guide rail flange than a calculation according to the formula of EN81.

__

In the report window of the car guide rail, you will see Sigm (Fgs) instead of Sigm (F).

Please note the geometric values n, h and f, which are lever calculation parameters.

Hint: Only with the manufacturer specific ropes is the weight factor included in the calculation automatically. The Common Components ropes have a weight factor of 0 kg by default. If the used ropes are not available in the loaded manufacturer libraries, the weight can be edited manually in the Weight fields. To be able to change the ropes weight manually, you will need to activate the User defined check mark in the lower left corner of the dialog. Diameter of ropes: Change the rope diameter See above

You can change some of the values in the rope tab manually by activating the User defined (the check mark in the lower left corner of the dialog). We recommend that you use the components from the manufacturer libraries since the material properties of these components are already stored in the component database. If you need to use different manufacturer specific components that are not loaded into the manufacturer libraries yet, you will need to specify the material properties manually.

2.5.3 Grooving Consideration

In the tab Grooving consideration, the safety factor for the suspension ropes according to the current traction sheaves groove type is calculated. The values calculated according to EN81 are displayed in the Safety factor section. The friction according to the three load cases is checked as well. You can change the traction sheave specific values (groove type, angle, etc) as well as the rope specific values in this dialog (no. of ropes, rope diameter, etc). All the other values in this dialog are calculated automatically. The precondition for the validity of the calculation results is that all influencing factors have been entered correctly in advance (traction sheave diam., weight of the ropes, rope diam., etc.)

The required safety factor is to small: Increase the number of ropes In the drawing. Click on the suspension rope and increase the number via the Properties docking window. See above

Increase the rope diameter

The current specific pressure is to big: See above See above

In the Groove as well as the Rope dialog, you can change the values to correct the calculation errors, but in general, the errors should be corrected in the drawing itself, e.g. by exchanging components or changing dimension / component values. e.g. Due to the fact that the suspension rope diameter is too small, the current specific pressure and the safety factor are also too small. Now you could change the values for rope diameter to a larger value in the rope calculation dialog by enabling the user-defined check mark, but this may not fix the problem. For example, if you change the rope diameter of a manufacturer specific rope, but the rope diameter does not exist in the database, the calculation according to the present material properties can cause further errors in the calculation. If you need to select a non-manufacturer specific rope, keep in mind that you need to correct the material properties for this rope too. The material properties of the manufacturer specific ropes are always stored in the database. The material properties of the Common Component ropes always need to be entered manually.

2.5.4 Load Conditions

The Load conditions are divided in three stress-cases: the loaded car, the stalled car and the emergency stop. For these three cases, traction should be ensured at all times. You should keep in mind that a slip of the car can occur, if the car is stalled in the well for any reason.

In this dialog, you can change the friction loss values for the guide rails as well as the acceleration and deceleration values. According to the rules for the acceleration and deceleration of the car, the values must not be smaller than 0.5 m/s for the normal case and not smaller than 0.8 m/s for the reduced buffer stroke case. The ratio T1 / T2 is wrong: E.g. for the loaded car, below respectively above, the ration is T1 > e f T2 Change in:

In order to get the correct result, you will need to know the factors the values T1 and T2 depend on.

We need to check where and how the factors for the calculation T1 and T2 can be edited. Switch to the tab Detailed rope forces to get an overview about the influencing factors that are included in the sum formula for the values T1 and T2.For each stress case according to EN81 -19,3 a), b), c) the steps for the calculation of the values T1 and T2 are displayed. In this dialog, the part of the rope with the highest stress rate is displayed graphically. In the Developed view window, the suspension rope is displayed unwound. The part of the rope with the highest stress is calculated automatically. The safety factor is calculated according to this part of the rope.

2.5.6 Rope Pulleys

This dialog displays the pulley and traction sheave data (the diameters, the weights, the mass moment of inertia and the friction loss). These values need to be entered manually in most cases (except for the Thyssen components) because most manufacturers dont specify this information in their component catalogues. In this case, you need to complete the missing data from existing documents or if you dont have the required data, you need to calculate them. ( mass, mass moment of inertia, friction loss).

A distinction is drawn between two (four for the emergency stop) different situations per stress case, the ratio for T1 and T2 needs to be calculated. Each column contains the formulas for the corresponding values (friction, suspension rope, and traveling cable) that are added up to the value T1 and T2. You cannot do any changes in this dialog. The diagram in the Cylinder dialog displays the maximum carload in relation to the traveling height. The force progression of the selected cylinder must be above this value. In the cylinder type table, you have the possibility to select a different cylinder (a manufacturer specific cylinder as well as a standard cylinder). The force progression of the selected cylinder is displayed in the diagram immediately. All cylinder models whose force progression is below the required value are marked in red.

Lets go back to the Cylinder data dialog.

In general, the values in the Cylinder/Ram section are not specified by most of the manufacturers (except GMV) and need to be added manually. For telescopic cylinders with external guidance, the manufacturer in general already specifies the number of guides. Some manufacturer specific cylinders may also be missing the values for wall and bottom thickness. The reserve stroke is the only value that is not specified by all the manufacturers. This value must be the value of the buffer stroke. Missing values must be taken from existing manufacturer documents or from the component part documents.

In most cases, the rope weight per running meter needs to be entered manually. The Cylinder base weight as well as the Ram top weight is an important value for the calculation of the cylinder force on the pit; these values need to be entered manually too. If the calculated buckling force exceeds the maximum value of the selected cylinder, then you either need to select a different cylinder or you need to select different type of external guidance that will increase the buckling force strength of the cylinder (for telescopic cylinders only).
