COMMENT PERIOD EXTENDED FOR CULEBRA NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
COMPREHENSIVE CONSERVATION PLAN
CULEBRA, Puerto Rico - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has extended the comment period
to August 31, 2012, on its proposed Comprehensive Conservation Plan (CCP) and
Environmental Assessment (EA) for Culebra National Wildlife Refuge. The DRAFT CCP was
originally announced in the Federal Register on July 11, 2012.
The draft plan proposes three options, including a preferred alternative, for managing the refuge
for the next 15 years. To learn more about the CCP, visit http://www.fws.gov/southeast/planning.

Culebra National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1909, is located in the Municipality of Culebra,
Puerto Rico. The refuge is composed of 1,568 acres. This Refuge provides a variety of habitat
types that are utilized by 14 species of migratory seabirds, including Laughing Gulls, Sooty,
Roseate, and Bridled Terns, White-tailed and Red-billed Tropicbirds, and Brown Noddies.
Throughout the year three species of Boobies, Magnificent Frigate birds, Brown Pelicans and
Royal Terns are found in remote areas of the archipelago. Punta Molinos (the northwest tip of
Flamenco Peninsula) provides nesting habitat for a colony of about 30,000 Sooty Terns that
return each spring.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal Federal agency responsible for conserving,
protecting, and enhancing fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats. In Puerto Rico, FWS
administers five refuges: Cabo Rojo, Culebra, Vieques, Laguna Cartagena (Lajas) y Desecheo.

PARA EL PLAN ABARCADOR DE CONSERVACIN DEL REFUGIO DE VIDA
SILVESTRE DE CULEBRA
CULEBRA, Puerto Rico - El Servicio Federal de Pesca y Vida Silvestre ha extendido el periodo
de comentarios hasta el 31 de agosto de 2012, sobre el Borrador del Plan Abarcador de
Conservacin (PAC) (Comprehensive Conservation Plan) y su Evaluacin Ambiental,
preparados para el Refugio de Vida Silvestre de Culebra. La fecha original para proveer
comentarios fue publicada en el Registro Federal (Federal Register) el 11 de julio de 2012.
El borrador del Plan propone 3 alternativas, incluyendo la alternativa preferida por el Servicio,
para manejar el Refugio por los prximos 15 aos. Para ms informacin sobre el PAC (CCP,

El Refugio de Vida Silvestre de Culebra, establecido en 1909, se encuentra en la isla municipio
de Culebra, Puerto Rico. La extensin territorial del mismo es aproximadamente 1,568 acres.
Este Refugio provee una gran variedad de tipos de hbitats utilizados por 14 especies de aves
migratorias, entre las cuales se encuentran las Gaviotas gallegas, monjas, oscuras, cerveras, y la
palometa (en peligro de extincin), as como dos especies de rabijuncos. A travs del ao, tres
especies de Bobas, Fragatas, Pelcanos y Gaviotas reales se pueden encontrar en reas del
archipilago que son parte del Refugio. Punta Molinos (la punta noroeste de la Pennsula
Flamenco) provee hbitat de anidamiento para una colonia de 30,000 Gaviotas oscuras que

regresan cada primavera.
El Servicio Federal de Pesca y Vida Silvestre es la agencia principal responsable de la
conservacin, proteccin y restauracin de los peces, la vida silvestre y las plantas, y sus hbitats.
En Puerto Rico, el Servicio administra 5 refugios: Cabo Rojo, Culebra, Vieques, Laguna
