Sex assault, arson cases proceed

By Casey Farrar Sentinel Staff | Posted: Tuesday, June 5, 2012 12:15 pm A Hinsdale man accused of sexually assaulting two girls under 13 years old was among those recently indicted by a Cheshire County grand jury. Also indicted on multiple charges is a Vermont man whom police say tried to burn down the Chesterfield foster home where he lived in March. Dale Desmarias, 38, of 476 Chesterfield Road, faces five counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault and one count of felonious sexual assault, according to court documents. Desmarias is accused of sexually assaulting the two girls between 2004 and 2009 and from late 2011 to early 2012, court documents showed. And Jeffrey Ford, 18, of Guilford, Vt., faces charges of arson, simple assault on a police officer and criminal mischief, according to court documents. Police were called to a Gulf Road home in Chesterfield on March 19 for a report that Ford, after an argument with his foster mother, was pouring gasoline outside the house and threatening to light it on fire. When Chesterfield police Officer Noah Sanctuary arrived, Ford began to walk away, then turned and threw a grill lighter at the officers chest and began swinging his arms and shouting, according to a police affidavit Sanctuary filed in 8th Circuit Court District Division in Keene. Police say Ford poured more than 20 gallons of gasoline from several containers on the yard, around a vehicle in the driveway, around the deck and front of the house, and on the road in front of the house, court documents showed. An indictment is not an indication of guilt. It is a determination by a grand jury that prosecutors have enough evidence to proceed with a trial. Other recent indictments include: u Christopher Palermo, 35, whose address is listed as the Cheshire County jail in Keene, faces two counts of assault by a prisoner, criminal mischief, all felonies, and a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief. Palermo is accused of throwing feces and a liquid substance at a correctional officer in the jail, according to court documents. Palermo is also accused of damaging a jail cell, causing more than $1,500 in damage, and striking the equipment during his video arraignment, causing more than $100 damage, documents showed.
