ROMEO AND JULIET; THE THEATRICAL PLAY

A REACTION Id rather die than to live without your love. A touching line that remained in my mind after leaving Teatro Ilocandia, a plays part that caught me to be inspired and thoroughly get the thought of an unbreakable love. Yes, clear are the ideas portrayed in that three-hour theatrical show and Im fulfilled amazed, lucky and in love. The story of Romeo and Juliet begins with two arguing rich families. Lately, two persons, one from each warring clan, fell in love in an immediate and unexpected way. Even knowing the families gap, they pursued their love, real and genuine, and secretly married. Greater conflict arose after killing of members from each of the families. The man is sentenced to banishment; the lady is to be married to another. Both of them didnt want their fate, away from each other. It all ended up to miscommunication, yet, they resumed their endless relationship in heaven, with suicide as the reason. That simple summary of a viewer like me proves the effectiveness of the stage play to express a story. The theme of love, time and destiny was clearly depicted. The play showed love as its characters acted the way a couple strives for their happiness. It showed quality of time as its scenes were properly sequenced. It showed how to drive destiny as the lovers made everything to make their love possible, even using death. If in case Romeo and Juliet were to be alive, possible effects would be more harm between the Montagues and the Capulets. Unrequited love will always occur, between Paris and Juliet, which might cause a greater conflict in the story. In the end of the play, the death of Romeo and Juliet made the feud among the families be gone. But maybe, if Romeo and Juliet proved that they can have a good life being together, as joined Capulet and Montague, this might shake the hands of their families. Talking about the whole presentation, that was a professional thing, yet, theres still this damn sound system which ruined the show. The orbiting officers blame cellphones and gadgets turned on, but the speaker really didnt work in its best. Being a Filipino cannot be hid in some of the artists. Some of them, or most I should say, had dictions distinguishable to a Filipino speaker. One even spoke too fast, not considering the clarity of his words and that I, as part of the audience was just relying to his actions in order to understand his dialogue. The background was too dull, comparing to a cheaper theatrical show that I watched before, Romeo and Juliet just used lights to differ the situations. But still, these were all covered. The characters were gorgeous, especially Fretzie Bercede (Juliet), who made the crowd amazed and Wowed in her first scene appearance. She looked very beautiful in her pink dress which made my eyes even pop. Another star was Brett Jackson, who I appreciated for his speech was too good diction, slang and clarity, including his handsome looks, which was evident during

the picture taking after the show. The nurse was good too; she acted great and delivered well. The joker in the first part of the show was the best. He made the attraction, and excited everyone for he began the play with a bang, I was excited then because still in beginning, I was then laughing and being brought by scenes emotions. The fight scenes were good, made better by that red surprising light in cases a man is stabbed by sword. The opening of a door in the background, which I call the final surprise, was effective too. It was so nice for it opened the greatest scene of the classic story, when Romeo died and Juliet followed. The scenes were arranged in a manner a narrow minded like me can chain out those parts to assemble the story. The lights too were used well in depicting night, day, war, inside, out, etc. Stories teach lessons, so does the Romeo and Juliet. The first life lesson in Romeo & Juliet is that you should not make rush decisions, which usually only lead to trouble. An example of this is when Romeo wants to kill himself because he is banished from Verona for killing Tybalt. Another is that we should consider possible repercussions and outcomes. Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet, many characters make decisions that are obviously not thought through, such as when the Friar gives Juliet the vial that contains the drug to put her in a death-like coma. He does not anticipate that Romeo will not receive the letter that says Juliet is in a coma and not dead. This miscommunication causes the death of three people, Romeo, Juliet and Paris. The third lesson is that suicide should not be an option for dealing with the problems of young love. Romeo and Juliets love is really infatuation. True love takes time to build. Romeo and Juliet only knew each other for five days, which is not enough time for anyone to fall in love. Its a nice plot for a play, but not for real life. After Romeo kills himself with poison, Juliet kills herself with a dagger: "This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die." This is not the best answer to her problems. Romeo and Juliet can teach us many valuable life lessons. These moral in Romeo and Juliet are mainly that you should not make rush decisions, that you should think through most decisions, and that young love does not justify suicide. My argument is that life lessons can be learned through reading, but the values learned must be applied to a persons life to get anything out of the lessons learned. I finally walked out from the hall, sojourn, yet filled with many experience and ideas. Still amazed, with the crew, the acts, the show, the characters, Fretzie, and everything, I was really fulfilled. I probably spent a lot for that but the time of watching the show was too precious, it contained a great knowledge. I was still brought by the story, really in love. I told the story to someone and she said well make our own too. I imagined myself as Romeo, and that someone immediately texted? Is and always be my Juliet. -Jo
