Children got the chance to read
to three therapy dogs Dink, Dr.
Seuss and Brownie at the M.
Allan Vogelson Librarys Read to
a Dog event, Monday Aug. 6 from
7 to 8 p.m.
Each child picked their own
book, separated into three groups
and took turns reading to the
dogs.
The dogs relaxed as the chil-
dren read, until it was time to
switch groups. Rotating reading
groups allowed the children to
read to each dog while petting
them.
Neelam Rastogi, brought her
daughters Nandini and Ami to
their first session of reading to
therapy dogs.
Rastogi mentioned that they
went to many different libraries
in the area, but she described the
Vogelson library as one of the
best so far.
I think it is beneficial for all of
the kids, Rastogi said.
She says it helps the children
prepare for school by setting up a
structured classroom like atmos-
phere with activities, story time
and social interactions.
It makes a difference to have
that experience, Rastogi said.
Nandini read her favorite book,
Baker, Baker, Cookie Maker.

Voorhees Environmental and
Cultural Education Foundation
(VECEF) is meeting with the
Township Committee on Monday,
Aug. 20 at 8 p.m. to discuss plans
for the Voorhees Environmental
Park.
Intending to bring more envi-
ronmental aspects into the com-
munity, VECEF was incorporated
in 2005.
Collaborating with the
Voorhees Township and the Rut-
gers Center for Urban Environ-
mental Sustainability (CUES),
the most recent project the
VECEF is taking on is repurpos-
ing 37 acres of landfill on Centen-
nial Boulevard.
After the project is completed,
the landfill will turn into a place
where residents can connect with
nature, said VECEF President
Helen Arvin.

needs to take to make sure the

project is done properly, said
Arvin. Draft designs will be pre-
sented to the committee in the
hopes that the first part of ap-
provals is made.
Arvin, a resident of Voorhees
for about 30 years, wants
Voorhees residents to take part in
the meeting and ask questions
about the project.
We want a place where people
can relax and look at nature,
Arvin said.
According to Arvin, the
VECEF is made up of local pro-
fessional who are interested in
giving back to the community,
and bringing in the students from
Rutgers is instrumental to
[working] with the township.
We have a small board mem-
bership, said Arvin. I dont do
anything without working with
our advisory committee.
VECEF is inviting the commu-
nity to take part in the presenta-
tion and pending approval of the
design. Dr. Wolfram Hoefer, pro-
fessor of landscape and design at
Rutgers School of Environmental
and Biological Sciences, is going
to present the first draft design
that was prepared by the students
from the Rutgers Department of
Landscape Architecture graduate
program, according to a news re-
lease. The organization is also
inviting the Voorhees Township
Committee to approve the design.
The meeting will be held at
Voorhees Town Hall, Monday,
Aug. 20 at 8 p.m.

On Aug. 17, 18 and 19, Checking
For Charity, commonly known as
CFC, will host its fourth annual
hockey tournament in South Jer-
sey.
CFC is a non-profit organiza-
tion that is committed to raising
money for charities through pro-
fessional and competitive hockey
tournaments. CFC will have the
tournament at the Flyers Skate
Zone facilities in Voorhees and
Pennsauken.
CFC began with a group of
hockey players and friends that
would play together on Sunday
mornings. CFC President Matt
Bader wanted to build a non-prof-
it organization that would benefit
various charities and understood
how the network of hockey could
be used to reach out. CFC is a
tournament that allows each
team involved to represent a char-
ity of their choice. At the conclu-
sion of each annual CFC tourna-
ment, every charity receives a
portion of the proceeds raised
during the event. The portions
are determined and distributed
based on how the teams place
throughout the weekend-long
tournament.
In the first year, CFC had eight
teams competing to represent dif-
ferent charities, and over $10,000
was raised for the charities in-
volved. Last year during the third
annual event, CFC raised over
$30,000 for even more charities.
Ed Gorleski is a CFC board mem-
ber and the Director of Charita-
ble and Volunteer Relations. Gor-
leski explained that the philoso-
phy of CFC can be summarized
in the motto, Our Goal is to As-
sist.
He said, We believe that by
leveraging our large network of
friends, family and fellow hockey
players, we can reach and help a
number of other local and nation-
al non-profit organizations.
There will be competitive hock-
ey to watch for free, merchandise
available for purchase, raffle tick-
ets and prizes, as well as a beef
and beer promotional event with
appearances to help raise aware-
ness and funds for the event.

In August of 1989 a small group of
Voorhees business owners formed a local
club to promote business in the Township.
The Voorhees Business Association (VBA)
was born.
The mission of the VBA is to provide a
forum for businesspersons and businesses
in the area to meet, share and discuss con-
cerns and interests of a civic, commercial,
cultural or economic nature. The VBA also
seeks to facilitate a dialogue between the
local business community and elected offi-
cials and to channel the energies and re-
sources of the business community and
elected officials into improving Voorhees
Township.
The VBA has also partnered with our
Economic Development Committee to
form the Voorhees Business Retention
Task Force to help our local businesses
continue to thrive.
In addition to providing an opportunity
to network, the VBA serves a charitable
function by providing annual scholarships
to two deserving
local high school
students based on
academic achieve-
ment and commu-
nity involvement.
The VBA also pro-
vides gifts and food
for needy families
over the holidays.

change program.
On Friday, Jan.
25, 2013, the VBA
will be sponsoring a bowling event to raise
money to upgrade the Voorhees Middle
School theater projection system. The
event will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 30
Strikes Bowling Alley in Stratford. For $95
per lane, a party of six people gets two
hours of bowling, shoes, a pizza and a
pitcher of soda. Sponsorships are available
for $150 and include the above package as
well as a large sponsorship sign with a
logo.
Over the last two years, the VBA mem-
bership has more than doubled.
Lunch meetings are typically held on
the third Wednesday of the month at noon
at Pasta Pomodoro in Eagle Plaza. Howev-
er, the next meeting on Aug. 15 will be at
the new Virtua Medical Campus.

light Series is Thursday, Aug. 16 (rain date

W
hen Gov. Christie last week
signed a bill that overhauled
teacher tenure in the state,
it was a landmark moment. But its not
the final piece of the puzzle. Not even
close.
The measure, which was supported
by both parties, strives to make teach-
ers more accountable through evalua-
tions and reviews. If they get bad re-
views, they could be removed from the
classroom. The bill also added a year
before tenure is granted.
Were all for rewarding the best
teachers and getting the bad ones out
of the classroom. In theory, this move
is a step toward that.
But questions remain.
What will the final version of the
teacher evaluation system look like? In
other words, can the state implement a
system that effectively identifies teach-
ers who need to be rewarded and those
who need to go? Will local districts
have to hire more managers or super-
visors? Will that lead to tax hikes?
Student achievement is another ele-
ment of the bill, and another area in
which teachers are to be measured.
Does that mean standardized test re-
sults will be used? What about those
teachers who teach grades that dont
have standardized testing? Is it smart
to teach to the test? Since a childs
educational foundation begins early, is
it fair to hold a teacher accountable for
educational shortcomings that should
have been addressed years earlier?
Also, the measure is silent on the
last in, first out system when it comes
to layoffs.
Make no mistake significant ad-
vances were made in this bill. The
state is heading in the right direction
and should be congratulated for taking
initial steps to improve public educa-
tion.
But we shouldnt expect changes to
happen overnight. And we shouldnt
expect a perfect system right out of the
starting gate.
There are too many questions still to
be answered.

meet and read to all three dogs,
she said her favorite dog was
Brownie.
Brownies owner, Samantha
Canino said that even if someone
is afraid of dogs, Brownie knows
how to approach them.
Claudia Buderman, owner of
Dr. Seuss, said Doc would not stop
nudging her to leave the house.
Doc laid on her back while the
children read to her.
I tell the children that she is
imagining what they are reading
to her, Buderman said.
At the end of story time, the
children had the chance to partic-
ipate in a craft.
Library Associate Kathy Maho-
ny said the activity order for Read
to a Dog depends on the size of
the group. If the group is large
enough to split into two, Murphy
allows one group to start on crafts
while the other group reads to the
dogs.
Buderman believes that the
reading sessions lesson anxiety
for children, bring humor into
reading and allows them to forget
if they have difficulty reading.
It gives them more confi-
dence, Buderman said.
Mahony has been running the
program for about five years and
she received nothing but compli-
ments from the therapy dog own-
ers who started visiting the li-
brary with their dogs a few years
before Mahony started working
at the library.
Linda Zangari has been attend-
ing the therapy dog readings for
eight years. Although her grey-
hound Dink wasnt always in the
picture, Zangari takes him to var-
ious special needs classrooms
when requested.
Mahony mentioned that there
are other programs in the library
that are geared toward specific
age groups. Read to a Dog is
geared toward children from ages
5 to 11.
The next time Dink, Dr. Seuss
and Brownie will appear is Mon-
day, Sept. 10, Oct. 15 and Nov. 19.
The dogs will be waiting for the
children at 7 p.m. and end at 8
p.m.
The M. Allen Vogelson Library
is located on 203 Laurel Road. Its
open Monday to Friday from 10
a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10
a.m. to 6 p.m. and will reopen
Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Camden County Library Direc-
tor Linda Devlin urges all Cam-
den County residents to take the
librarys survey as it plans to
meet the future needs and inter-
ests of its customers and the pub-
lic in general.
The Camden County Library
System is seeking input from its
customers and the public in gen-
eral about how it meets their
needs and what it should do in the
future. The survey is part of the
librarys strategic planning as it
considers what to keep and what
to change for the next five years
in terms of programs, services
and materials.
Circulation of our materials,
visits to the library and the num-
ber of people attending our pro-
gram events at all eight branches
have been consistently rising
over the years, so we know that
we are doing a lot of things
right, says Linda Devlin, direc-
tor of the library system. But we
want to plan for the future and
evolve to meet the changing needs
and interests of
our customers.
The short
survey consists
of only two
open-ended
questions and a
zip code re-
quest.

favorite thing
about your library?
We want to build the library of
your dreams. What would make
you use the library more often?
What is your zip code?
The public can take the survey
online at http://www.camden-
countylibrary.org/poll2012 or by
filling out a paper form available
at any one of the systems eight
branches and returning it to any
branch. Each branch will have a
specially marked box at its circu-
lation desk to collect the surveys
for those who choose to use the
paper form.
Devlin sees the survey as a crit-
ical first step in the process of
planning how the library can bet-
ter help its users over the next
five years. We could be compla-
cent with our current success, but
considering how we can build on
that success for the future will in-
sure that our libraries have a dy-
namic presence in the communi-
ties we serve, Devlin said.

and Rutgers), Gloucester Town-
