Code of Conduct
Saint Louis University Medical Group (UMG) recently implemented a Code of Conduct for the purpose of establishing expectations for professional behavior amongst the faculty and staff of the UMG. The Code of Conduct encourages professional collaboration and promotion of a congenial workplace and learning environment. After the initial draft was approved by the UMG Clinical Operations Committee it was presented to the Clinical Chairs and the Faculty Affairs Committee. In February, 2012, the UMG Executive Committee approved the Code of Conduct as SLUCare Policy Number 6-108. All faculty and staff will be required to review and sign the policy at the time of their reappointment and/or annual review. The final, approved Code of Conduct policy can be found at http://pmoweb.slu.edu/. Click on SLUCare and then choose Policies and Procedures.

JR. FACULTY FOCUS GROUP

As a first effort to address the unique needs of the junior faculty at SLUSOM, the OFAPD hosted a junior faculty focus group meeting. A needs assessment, sent to all junior faculty, reflected a need for further attention and education around mentoring and the promotions process at SLUSOM. Interestingly, these topics were also identified as key issues by faculty who participated in the Faculty Forward survey in 2009, both at Saint Louis University School of Medicine and 23 other participating US medical schools. Faculty reported Newslink was their primary means of learning about upcoming programs and informational updates about SLU.

School of Medicine By Law Revisions Approved The Faculty Affairs Committee, in conjunction with the SOM Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development, recently updated and revised the School of Medicine By Laws. The final revisions were presented at the May 14, 2012 General Medical Faculty Meeting. AAMC Faculty Professional Development Seminar

In July, the Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development sponsored Dr. Dina Calamur to attend the AAMC Early Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar; a three-day seminar focused on building skills for careers in academic medicine. The Early Career Faculty Professional Development Seminar this July was an invaluable experience for a woman in a junior faculty position on an academic path. What made this conference so special was that the participants were all junior women faculty in an academic setting and the instructors and mentors were well established in their careers. These women shared their experiences of successfully navigating the academic path and gave us insight into their struggles and often times need for redirection. In addition to this, we were given individualized attention in small groups with mentors to help delineate our academic goals and develop a path to attain them. It was a very powerful and valuable experience. We learned key tools to be successful in our interactions with people. In "Being Heard: Managing Yourself and Difficult Conversations," we explored the facets of effective communication and the importance of finding a "third" story where differences exist to define a mutual goal. There were also a multitude of workshops offered that involved negotiation skills, dealing with personality differences from the perspective of the Myer's-Briggs personality types, planning effective meetings. All in all, the conference was a tremendous learning experience and offered me an avenue to gain a set of tools that are clearly important for successfully navigating the academic path. I feel honored and privileged to have been selected to participate. This the first time in my career that I have been exposed to these invaluable concepts, and I would strongly encourage other junior women to attend. Dina Calamur The Office of Faculty Affairs and Development will also sponsor two candidates to attend the AAMC MidCareer Women Professional Development program to be held in December 2012. Registration opens in early October. The OFAD will provide the registration fees for two faculty members at the rank of Associate or full Professor. In kind support for travel and housing is expected to be covered from departmental funds. Further information on the application process will be forthcoming.
