Butte, Humboldt, and Shasta County Libraries Pilot Kindle Interlibrary Loan Program for Northern California
The Butte County Library has teamed up with Shasta and Humboldt County Libraries to pilot an alternative interlibrary loan program utilizing amazon.com Kindle ereaders to circulate hard to find titles. The project, called Zip Books: Digital Library of Northern California, was designed to be more efficient and save on ground transportation costs that are typically part of interlibrary loan (ILL) transactions, and can be quite expensive based on individual requests. Traditional book format will be used to fill requests when available as per the existing ILL program. With grant funds distributed by the California State Library, Butte, Humboldt, and Shasta counties each obtained a limited number of Kindle Touch devices. Library staff searches a variety of eBook websites for the requested content, which is purchased and downloaded onto the Kindle for check out to the patron. In addition to the cost saving benefits, it is hoped that the pilot program will save patrons and staff valuable time. A brief survey form is included in each loaned Kindle so that patrons may provide user feedback and comments about their experience with the program. An important distinction of this project is that only titles requested through interlibrary loan are eligible for check out on the Kindles. Everyday book loans are not part of this pilot program, but books that are typically requested from locations outside of Butte County are considered eligible. Patrons must have a Butte County library card and account in good standing to take advantage of this exciting new opportunity, which gives many people hands-on experience with an e-reader device for the first time. Zip Books: Digital Library of Northern California is supported in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. Patrons and curiosity seekers may visit the library website 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at http://www.buttecounty.net/ bclibrary to check account status, renew loans, access databases and tutors, check out eBooks, and more.

Unique Type Of Hand, Foot And Mouth Disease Circulating In California

With the new school year fast approaching, Butte County Public Health Department would like to make families aware that a unique strain of Hand, Foot and Mouth disease (HFMD), called coxsackie virus 6 (CAV6), is currently circulating in California. HFMD is a common viral illness that usually affects infants and children younger than 5 years old. HFMD may be caused by one of several related viruses. Often the common strains of HFMD cause mild to moderate illness, including a rash. The unique strain of HFMD, CAV6, may cause a more extensive rash and may occur in older children and adults. Outbreaks of HFMD are common in summer and early autumn. Dr. Lundberg, Health Officer for Butte County advises, Hand, foot and mouth disease is a common virus that spreads through our community, usually among childcare facilities and sometimes schools. We would like people to be aware of the signs and symptoms of HFMD, and with the new school year starting soon, we want to make sure children that are ill stay home to prevent the spread. Symptoms Include: Fever, rash, sores, poor appetite, a vague feeling of illness and sore throat. Painful sores in the mouth that may blister and become ulcers. Skin rash, flat or raised red spots, on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet developing over 1 to 2 days. CAV6 rash may also appear on arms, legs, and trunk. Though the rash seen with this unique type of HFMD can be more extensive with larger blisters, symptoms are generally mild and resolve in 7 to 10 days. In rare cases, HFMD can cause complications. Persons concerned about their symptoms should contact their doctor, especially if experiencing a high fever, headache, stiff neck or back pain. To help prevent the spread of HFMD, wash hands with soap and water carefully and frequently. Also, disinfect surfaces and items, including toys. Exclude sick children from school or daycare until 1) They have been without fever for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications; 2) Their lesions are healed or scabbed and not draining or oozing. If large blisters are present, the child should be excluded until risk of rupture has passed. Butte County Public Health Department has notified medical professionals to be aware of possible unusual or more extensive symptoms. Childcare providers have been informed of the signs, symptoms, and recommendations including to report outbreaks to the Butte County Public Health Department. For additional information about HFMD, please visit our Butte County Public Health website at www.buttecounty. net/publichealth or call the Butte County Communicable Disease Division as (530) 538-2840.

Turner Print Museum to Present Never Before Seen Paintings & Scratchboard Works Created by Janet Turner
We all know what a great printmaker and print collector Janet Turner was. Her print works hang in some of the most prestigious museums and galleries in the world. And her collecting of prints by famous as well as lesser-known printmakers became the basis for the Turner Print Museum s 3500-plus print collection. Get ready to add outstanding painter and outstanding scratchboard artist to Turner s list of accomplishments during her lifetime (1914-1988). CSU, Chico s Janet Turner Print Museum, located in the Meriam Library, next to the Valene L. Smith Museum of Anthropology, will be presenting paintings and scratchboard works done by its namesake all on public display for the first time during its initial exhibition of the 20122013 season. New View: Janet Turner Paintings and Scratchboards runs August 27-September 23 with a curator s talk and reception taking place at the museum Thursday, August 30 beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Turner is open Monday-Saturday 11 a.m.-4 p.m. It seems reasonable to assume that Turner world be interested not just in printmaking, but also in other forms of artistic expression. She after all was a professor in Chico State s Art Department from 19591981 and well-versed not only in printmaking but also through her preparatory education in other forms of creating art. This exhibition presents Janet s scratchboard work as individual art, even if they were part of the development of art in another medium, specifically her prints, noted Catherine Sullivan, Curator of The Turner. Her infrequent paintings were also part of her printmaking image building process. Scratchboard, for people unfamiliar with this art form, is one of the oldest printmaking techniques; art historians theorize that its beginnings goes all the way back to caveman days when people would use sharp rocks to scratch images into bones. The materials used for scratchboard illustrations has evolved over time today s scratchboard artists are more apt to use a piece of paper or board covered with a white, chalk-like material and then coated with black ink; lines scratched into the surface with a knife-like tool collectively create an image. Depending on the intent of the artist, several areas may be cleared out for layering with watercolors, airbrush or acrylics, notes Wikipedia. These layers are then scratched off one by one to create different shades of color that blend into and highlight certain parts of the image. It can then be retouched with more paint as necessary. People that come to the exhibition and who are familiar with Turner s prints will see similarities between some of her scratchboard works or paintings and the print works she did. One of Turner s most iconic and well-known works, Koi, a detail which is on The Turner home page www.janetturner.org will be shown in its scratchboard form, as will another wellknown work, Bees Amid Tulip Tree. Sullivan said Turner s scratchboards were frequently used to explore an illustration technique that later would show up on one of her print works. I don t know any other printmakers that used scratchboards in the manner Janet did. I suspect she liked it for its painterly characteristics and as a guide for the line cutting needed for her prints. Sullivan believes Turner s scratchboard works have a singular and painterly appeal separate from her print works. I would not say her use of scratchboards made for a better print, but more so allowed her to conceive it in its totality before she began the stages necessary to compete the print work. That Turner was enamored with creating paintings speaks, Sullivan believes, to a strong ambition from her to be a painter. Her interest in color defining form, as seen in her prints, is evident in her paintings. I believe Janet had a strong desire to be a painter and found a way to create a greater body of work by infusing her prints with painterly aspects. Most commonly this was done with the carved blocks for form and a multitude of transparent and opaque screen print runs. Printmaking created a significant amount of art to sell and exhibit versus the one-off that is a singular scratchboard or painting. All in all 25 scratchboards works and six paintings will be on display. The paintings were created from the 1940s to late 1950s; scratchboards are from 1940s to late 1960s. New View: Janet Turner Paintings and Scratchboards is made possible by the donation of these works to the Turner collection by Vernon and Marie Fish, local collectors of Turner s works. While Janet regarded the scratchboard and paintings as preparatory for her print works, the late Vernon and Marie Fish included them in their personal retrospective collection of Turner s work. The importance of these scratchboard and paintings works is they demonstrate the breath of Janet s skill in expressing personal artistry in a variety of media. They exhibit a spontaneity that is sometimes muted in the printmaking translation. A select number of prints from the Turner Collection that expand on the New View exhibition at the museum will be displayed in the Ayres Hall first floor cases on the CSU, Chico campus. For more information on the exhibition, call Sullivan at 898-4476 or visit www.janetturner.org. Groups and classes can go online to make arrangements for visits to The Turner, including visits outside the public viewing hours. The website has a section for class applications for docent tours and related activities. This form should be submitted prior to the visit to ensure a productive and educational experience for the class. Please note that the Normal Avenue Parking Lot, located across from CSU, Chico s Performing Arts Center, is closed while construction commences on a new parking structure; parking is available near the Meriam Library on nearby Chico streets and also at adjacent Chico State parking lots. The Janet Turner Print Museum is part of the School of the Arts at CSU, Chico. To see a video of art exhibitions presented during 2012-2013 by The Turner and University Art Gallery please visit http://bit.ly/ Pvz2HH.

Bridal registries have long been the way for engaged couples to identify exactly what they needand want to start their lives together. Traditionally, young couples who were establishing a home together created a registry chock-full of household items. Nowadays, however, many couples prefer a new registry trend that can help turn the honeymoon they envision into a wellplanned reality. The increasingly popular honeymoon registry lets friends and family help the bride and groom afford a trip to Fiji, the Caribbean or anywhere in the world they dream of going. Instead of purchasing an impersonal set of

atware or risking a duplicate gift, wedding guests can now contribute to unique experiences that can help make a couples honeymoon all the more memorable, such as sponsoring a couples massage, a sunset cruise, a snorkeling excursion or a helicopter tour. As one bride, Lisa Dexter Johnson, put it: Our honeymoon in Hawaii was a once-in-a-lifetime trip that we will always cherish. Our friends and family loved the idea of being able to help us create memories that will remind us of them. The only major honeymoon registry service that also offers full-service, complimentary travel planning is 1-800-Registry. Its a free online registry that makes it simple to select unforgettable honeymoon gifts. The company will even contribute $200 to get the honeymoon fund started. In addition, couples can make the most of their honeymoon trip with some proper planning: Start early. The sooner you decide where youre going and where youre staying, the more likely you are to get what you want at a good

price. It will also give you time to arrange for passports and visas this may take time, especially if a name change is involved. Go later. Many couples take the time right after their wedding to settle in and unwind and plan to take their honeymoon trip when they have more time or more money or when the destination is less expensive or less crowded. Get to know the destination. Check out the weather, the amenities and the costs. You can consult with a 1-800-Registry Honeymoon Specialist for all the destination details. You can create a honeymoon registry, view a registry or learn more at www.1800registry.com or by calling (800) 256-4920.

BACK TO SCHOOL

The Busy Moms Back to School Checklist

By Melissa Frasier (aka The Busy Mom)
Most people make resolutions about how they will do things differently every New Years Eve, like going to the gym more than once a month or cutting desserts out of their diet. As we all know, those resolutions can be hard to keep after the rst week, and it is easy to fall back into old habits. For me, I make resolutions at the beginning of each new school year of things I will do differently to try make my life less crazy. For my household, this school year will be challenging with three kids at three different schools, which will make for an even busier schedule. With the back-to-school countdown fast approaching in the next weeks, its time for this busy mom to make her back-toschool checklist. Lets see what I have so far: Make lunches the night before, packing everything but sandwiches. Have a designated spot for all homework. Go through backpacks daily and toss unwanted papers Plan dinners for the week on Sundays, and make sure to have all the needed ingredients. Have the weekly schedule written down on the family calendar. Dont forget to eat breakfast every morning! Leave the house ten minutes earlier than usual. If you noticed, most of the things on my checklist have to do with feeding my family, which seems to be a never ending task. I am sure all you busy moms can relate to the tedious job of trying to plan and prepare meals for the family, so my main goal is to try and prepare for this task by planning ahead. I tend to fall into the same old patterns of making the same things every day, so for me I need to think about the week on Sundays. Creating a weekly menu and shopping for all the ingredients should keep me on track. Also, packing lunches the night before is another resolution I have tried over the years, but I am determined to do it this year. I am going to try and do this as I am cleaning up after dinner and recruit my kids to help bag their own lunches. I also noticed that my checklist involves resolutions to save time, which is one of my biggest stressors. So making a goal to leave the house ten minutes before I normally do will be interesting. Can I actually get out the door with everything ready to go and not forget a kid in the process? This remains to be seen. Tossing all unwanted papers and going through backpacks daily is another time saver, keeping me from accumulating a pile of papers to go through later. Dont forget to make your backto-school checklist ASAP. What is most important to you? Whatever your back to school checklist looks like, try to remain positive about it. Change is hard, and some days will be smoother than others. Dont forget this is your busy mom checklist, and you can edit it or toss it out completely, if it is not working for you. Even if you only stick to one thing on your checklist this year, that is one more change you have made in your life to make things better. So to all you busy moms out there, happy back to school!
