Importing GPS point data to MapInfo or ArcMap with MapSource


Setting the Garmin GPS device in stand-by status Join the device to the computer with a cable. Use the USB port of the computer. Start the GPS device.

Transferring point data to MapSource Start the MapSource programme. Change the settings of the programme to correspond the settings used in collecting the point data (Edit > Preferences). When using the so-called united Finnish coordinate system, the settings are as follows: Units: Distance & Speed: Metric Heading: True Altitude/Elevation: Meters Depth: Meters Area: Square Meters, Square Kilometers Temperature: Celsius Position: Grid: Finnish (KKJ-27) Grid Datum: Finland Hayford Download the point data file from the GPS device to MapSource (Transfer > Receive from device). Select the device and the Waypoints from the menu. Select Receive and the data will download from the GPS device. All the Waypoints from the memory of the GPS device will open on the Waypoints page of MapSource, and in the map window on the right, where you can roughly chech that the points are as they should. Remove other points and leave only the points you have saved. Save the points from MapSource in ASCII format (File > Save as). Select "Text (Tab delimited) (*.txt)" as file format. Save.

UTU-LCC MANUALS Formatting a text file in Excel Start Excel and open the text file that you have saved in MapSource (File > Open ja Files of type: Text Files). Select Delimitedand Next. Select Taband Spaceas delimiting characters. Finish. The text file saved from MapSource might contain a lot of unnecessary information. In order to take the points to MapInfo you will only need a column that has the point ID and the columns that have the x and y coordinates of the point. Destroy the unnecessary columns and rows. The structure of the cleanedfile should be as follows: ID A B X_coordinate 1569476 1565229 Y_coordinate 6711763 6711630

Save the file again in ASCII format (File > Save As). Select Text (Tab delimited)as file format. Save.

Importing the point file to MapInfo Open the text file in MapInfo (Open Table and Files of Type: Delimited ASCII (*.txt)). Select "Tab" as file format and tick "Use First Line for Column Titles". OK. Next the point objects can be created by using the Table > Create Points... function. Select the right table in: Create Points for Table and select the desired symbol for the points in: using 'Symbol'. In addition, define the columns where the x and y coordinates are read from. Finally define the right projection, which is Finnish Coordinate System, Finnish KKJ Zone 3. OK. If Your other datasets are in a different coordinate system than Finnish KKJ Zone 3, then save the file again (Save copy as), and change the projection into e.g. Finnish Coordinate System, Finnish KKJ Zone 1. Save. Now the file is in the same coordinate system with the other data sets. Open the objects in a map window (Window > New Map Window).

Importing the point file to ArcMap

Create a dBase file (.dbf) from the file You created with MapSource. You can do this in Excel (Save as ) Open ArcMap Select Tools Add XY Data

Select the dbf-file You wish to import Specify the X- and Y-columns Set the coordinate system Choose OK
