American Graduate Day will be broadcast on KRCB Television Saturday, September 22, from 10 am to 5 pm. With every Community Partner profile, viewers will be invited to take an active role in their work and in the American Graduate initiative by volunteering their time, talent, or other resources. Dear Member, You have been reading in this guide about the progress on the documentary Rebels With A Cause (formerly Moments in Time). Producers Nancy Kelly and Kenji Yamamoto are partnering with KRCB to tell the incredible story of the saving of the Marin/Sonoma coast with the creation of Point Reyes National Seashore and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Next month we will be able to announce the date of the world premiere of the film. But right now we have some incredible news about the folks who are a part of the production. Youll remember the film Amadeus with the wonderful musical score. Well, Tom Boekelheide, who mixed the score and won an Oscar for it, is writing the score for Rebels. What an incredible talent to have as a part of the team. In addition, with a little help from our friends, we are thrilled to welcome Frances McDormond to the team as the narrator of the film. Youll remember her as the Oscar-winning lead in Fargo. A very talented, wonderful addition. You can see why we are so very excited to be able to share the film with you. Wait for October! Nancy Dobbs President and CEO

Our broadcast of American Graduate: Lets Make it Happen also coincides with the rollout of the Cradle to Career Initiative. This initiative reflects a coordinated effort among all sectors of society to address the systemic issues underlying the dropout rate while providing ongoing support for current students. Wednesday, September 5 at 7:30 pm Inside E Street: Graying Workplace ddDemographers are calling it the Silver Tsunami. Research shows that over the last 40 years, the percentage of workers aged 65 and older have increased by more than 100 percent. Add to the mix an ailing economy and many aging boomers are delaying retirement to stay at their jobs. With fewer young people entering the workforce, experts are advising companies to adjust both their design and culture to better accommodate their older employees. Tuesday, September 18 at 11:30 pm Frontline: My Father, My Brother and Me ddIn 2004, journalist Dave Iverson received the same news that had been delivered to his father and older brother years earlier: he had Parkinsons disease, a degenerative neurological disorder that affects about one million Americans. In this Frontline and ITVS joint production, Iverson sets off on a personal journey to explore the scientific, ethical, and political debate that surrounds Parkinsons, a disease at the center of the ongoing controversy over embryonic stem cell research. Thursday, September 27 at 9 pm Inside E Street: Dying Well Statistics show that nearly one-third of all Americans aged 65 and over had aggressive surgery in the last year of their life. Nearly a quarter of Medicares 113 billion dollar budget was spent on treating patients during these difficult days. Many physicians are now arguing that statistics do not reveal the amount of pain and suffering endured by patients and their families. Doctors and experts are urging patients to re-examine their palliative care choices, and opt for a better quality of life during their final days. This episode of Inside E Street features Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, chairman of the Department of Medical Ethics & Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania, and Dr. Ira Byock (pictured), author and director of palliative care at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Honoring Jewish New Year

Finding Kalman In this moving documentary a charismatic Holocaust survivor inspires her family to connect to relatives they never met. Focusing on her brother, Kalman, Anna recounts tales of a mischievous boy who tried to escape the Warsaw ghetto with her. Her daughter, an artist, devours the stories and paints his portrait over and over again. As Kalmans face emerges on canvas, the film moves from archival Warsaw ghetto footage to summers in a Catskills bungalow colonyfrom vibrant family life before World War II to now. Four generations grapple differently with their shared history. Sunday, September 16 at 10:30 pm Where Birds Never Sang Ninety-six kilometers from Berlin is a pastoral setting accessible by a road that winds through a woods of pine trees. There one can recline on the sandy river beach and look across to the town of Furstenberg, or watch local fishermen working from their docks and small boats, as they have for centuries. Furstenberg is a sylvan setting; quiet, peaceful, a place of refuge for citizens escaping the hubbub of Berlin. Not far from the center of this village is a wall, rather tall and imposing, made not of hand-cut stones, but of concrete. Even more startling, more incongruous, is the second wall of barbed wire. It is only then that we realize that behind his wall separating tranquility from history is Ravensbrueck, Hitlers largest concentration camp designed for women, a brutal camp where 92,000 women and children, out of 132,000 who were incarcerated there, met a cruel and inhumane death. Steve Coll Just how expansive is ExxonMobils power over Congress and the world? Steve Coll, author of Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power, writes in his book that ExxonMobil spends more money lobbying Congress than any other corporation and in some countries, its influence towers over the US Embassy. Within the energy industry, it is regarded as a highly efficient and profitable corporate machine with strong safety standards and relatively low rates of accidents and spills. But what really happens inside one of the worlds most secretive and powerful companies?

Clean Tech Innovation Whats on the horizon for clean tech? What are the barriers to innovation and what role should the government play? Climate One speaks to Dan Adler (President, California Clean Energy Fund), Jeff Byron (Vice Chair, Clean Tech Open; former Commissioner, California Energy Commission), Matt Scullin (Founder & CEO, Alphabet Energy, Inc.), and Cathy Zoi (Partner, Silver Lake Kraftwerk; former CEO, Al Gores Alliance for Climate Protection) on innovation in the clean tech world. Nuclear Revival? Two new nuclear plants are moving forward in the US for the first time in nearly 30 years. But the costs of the new US plants is a staggering $10 billion each, raising questions of whether new nukes can stand on their own legs without government crutches. Even if the United States doesnt build new nuclear reactors, it will have to decide what to do with its fleet of 104 aging plants. Should they be relicensed or retired? If they go offline, what other sources of low carbon energy could supply the 20 percent of electricity now generated by splitting atoms? Climate One talks about growing greener

September 6 EV Riders All major automakers are now selling models that are totally gas free (Nissan, Ford, Tesla) or run on electricity and gasoline (GM, Toyota). Charging stations are popping up around the state and customers are getting used to a whole new way of fueling their mobility. While these cars are often associated with environmental benefits, drivers say the zippy and quiet driving experience is a main reason to cut the fuel line. September 13 Boom or Bust? Climate change is going to dominate our world in the next century. Its a very big risk, but its also a tremendous opportunity, if we make the right choices, says Dan Miller, Managing Director at the venture capital firm The Roda Group. He notes here that climate change is also treated much differently than other global threats. September 20 Green Buildings Offices and homes waste a lot of energy and leave a lot of money on the table. A new generation of startups aim to change that by bringing innovative technology and finance to the building sector. September 27 Building Green Cities Commercial real estate is one of the most promising areas for cutting carbon with quick paybacks. What are the biggest financial and technological successes and challenges? What lies beyond LEED? How much green building is driven by policy? Economics? A broad discussion about innovation in architecture, building and urban planning. Thursdays at 7 pm

WordTemple features poems from Alcatraz

For four years beginning in 1998, WordTemple host Katherine Hastings served as the first docent for Alcatraz Island. Her mission was to research historical documents stored at the old prison and write interpretive programs based on what she found. This month, Hastings presents a number of poems written by former Alcatraz inmates that she included in a program called Writers on the Rock Inmate Poetry. Youll hear a poem by Rufus Franklin, who murdered an Alcatraz guard during an escape attempt by hitting him in the head with a hammer, a Mothers Day poem written by the infamous mobster Al Capone (pictured), and others. Hastings also visits this month with Nathalie Handal, the author of Poet in Andaluca. This new collection is a unique recreation, in reverse, of Federico Garca Lorcas Poet in New York, considered one of the most significant books ever published about New York City. Keeping Score-Thirteen Days When Music Changed Forever

With Michael Tilson Thomas and hosted by Suzanne Vega September 2 December 26, 1926: The Premiere of Tapiola This tone poem by Sibelius was his last major work before 30 years of silence, during which the world waited for an eighth symphony that never came. Sibelius in his time was seen as a nationalist along the lines of Grieg, but we now hear his music as radical and astonishingly prescient. September 9 January 10, 1931: The Debut of Charles Ives Three Places in New England This work is performed for the first time to mild applause at a concert funded by the composer himself. Mild applause, but Ives music was revolutionary. Before him, American concert music was almost entirely based on European models. After him, through Copland, Cage, and beyond, American classical music found its own voice. September 16 January 28, 1936: The Publication in Pravda of the article Chaos Instead of Music This article signaled Stalins displeasure with Shostakovichs opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk and led to the composers redemption in his Symphony No. 5. This program will explore Shostakovich and the sometimes mutually beneficial, sometimes terrifying, relationship between music and the totalitarian state. September 23 November 4, 1964: The Premiere of Terry Rileys In C This piece, which debuted at the San Francisco Tape Music Center, and the minimalist outpouring that it sparked, were a reaction to the rigid strictures of serialism and the stranglehold of the academic composers of the time. Sundays at 4 pm

Volunteer of the Month Caleb Jones

KRCB continues to be a draw for young people who want an opportunity to learn and experience the challenge of live broadcasting. Caleb Jones began volunteering at KRCB seven years ago as a junior at Windsor High School and hasnt missed an auction yet. When I asked him how his volunteer experience at KRCB has helped him in his up and coming career (which is not related to broadcasting), he told me that it taught him to be more aware of his surroundings and be ready to take action when things go awry. Given the fast pace of our world today this trait is critical and one that can only be learned on location. Calebs ability to respond quickly to situations is one of the things that makes him so valuable as a volunteer (we also like his sense of humor). He has handled cameras that wobbled, replaced failing microphones and gotten floor directors out of the cameras line of sight during a broadcast. The fact that the viewing public rarely notices anything out of the ordinary demonstrates the importance of having quick-thinking volunteers like Caleb. It is also important to the future of KRCB that young people take notice of the value that public media brings into their lives; our existence as a commercial-free station requires active support from our community. We think we have an important service to offer and young people like Caleb agree. Thank you, Caleb, for the number of ways you support KRCB. If you would like join Caleb and our production team as a volunteer for live events (including auction, election night broadcast, and KRCB Live!) contact Cheryl Scholar, Community Engagement Director at KRCB: 707-584-2005 or cheryl_scholar@krcb.org
