Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), Manipal, is extremely proud to announce its participation in the 2012 SAE BAJA USA

Competition in Madison, Wisconsin. A talented and enthusiastic team of students from various disciplines of engineering are involved in making an Off-Roader, for the competition organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The competition is scheduled to be held from the 7th to 10th of June, 2012.

TEAM MANIPAL RACING is into its 3rd year of manufacturing an ATV. The team has shown a tremendous improvement since its inception in the year 2009. TMR was one of the three teams in Asia to participate in this prestigious competition at SAE Baja Wisconsin 2009 and SAE Baja Rochester 2010. Its an excellent opportunity for students to apply the classroom knowledge gained to the realworld. Manipal Institute of Technology pledges full infrastructural support to Team Manipal Racing. However, a project of this magnitude, for its successful completion, would require support from the corporate sector, institutions and philanthropic personalities as well. We take this opportunity to invite you to be a proud partner of this ambitious project. We would like to have you as a partner in the Project and support the students in the design and production of the Car. The partnership benefits are listed in the brochure. We hope that you would support this student -driven venture generously. -Dr. Kumkum Garg Director Manipal Institute of Technology

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), a 100-year old international organization for mobility engineering professionals, holds an annual Baja Design Competition at the international level and national level. The aim of the participants is to design, fabricate, test, market and race a single seat off-road car prototype that will withstand stringent test conditions laid down by the SAE. Each year, about 100 teams from across the world converge at the SAE Baja USA Competition to show their planning, marketing and manufacturing skills. The offroaders are judged on the ability to traverse a harsh off-road course without succumbing to the rigors of it. Teams fight to have their design accepted for manufacturing by a fictitious firm.
Additionally, students are responsible for raising all of the funds necessary to compete, which adds a significant challenge and makes for a valuable learning experience.

SAE Baja Design Competition requires participants to use real world engineering practices to conquer the challenges associated with designing and building an ATV (All Terrain Vehicle). The planning and preparations begin with designing and simulation of the Vehicle, almost a year in advance. The fabrication work is done in the winter with rigorous testing and modifications being done until the Competition day. The Competition is a 4-day event with 3 different categories Static Events, Dynamic Events and the popular Endurance Race.

Scoring Criteria
COST REPORT PRESENTATION DESIGN EVALUATION DESIGN REPORT

This involves a detailed technical presentation about the design process covering all major technical systems of the car, from the Transmission to the Chassis. Additionally, safety and technical inspection is done to ensure conformity to prescribed rules and standards. Points are awarded based on the judges comments and the inspection results.

Scoring Criteria
The second day of the Event involves judging the off-roaders performance in rigorous field tests like acceleration, suspension, traction , slopeclimbing, maneuverability etc. Points are awarded on the basis of the performance in these tests and this also decides the starting order for the Endurance Race.

MANOEUVRABILITY

The Endurance Race, which typically lasts for 4 hours or 100 miles, is the highlight of the competition. A grueling track of 2-3 miles with a wide variety of natural and man-made obstacles is specially created for it. The Enduro is the best and the ultimate test of an off-roader with only the best teams being able to finish it, that too only after frequent repairs in the pits during the race.

Design competitions such as the SAE have tremendous educational value in developing practical skills and competencies.

Interdisciplinary skills Teams are composed of students from different years and disciplines promoting person-to-person interaction, student recruiting, alumni relations and community relations.
Motivation and dedication To compete in a competition of this scale, the team needs to be highly motivated throughout the project duration and they should believe in their project with conviction. Self directed and life-long learning The team members develop considerable expertise in various areas which are not covered in existing courses. The students are self-driven in their quest for knowledge.

Mentorship, apprenticeship and leadership The team develops an informal system of mentorship and apprenticeship with senior students mentoring junior students.
Practical experience This provides an excellent opportunity to develop practical, hands-on skill and experience to complement formal education. Self managed team The team is student initiated and managed thereby developing outstanding leadership and teamwork skills. Engineering challenge The engineering challenge of the competition is very high. This tests the engineering skills of the team at the highest level.

Manipal Institute of Technology is one of the oldest private engineering colleges in India with over 4000 students from 40 different countries. Located in the University town of Manipal, it is one of Indias rest private engineering colleges, founded in 1957 and is a constituent institution of Manipal University.

The students, here, have a thirst for innovation and generating market friendly novel engineering ideas. The college is responsible for producing some of the best ignited minds of the country. It promotes students with new innovative ideas who have a desire to excel.

As opposed to Cricket, which is a sport for the 'masses', Motorsports is a sport for the 'classes. The stupendous success of The Fastest Indian, Narain Karthikeyan and the rise of speedster Karun Chandok along with the arrival of Force India in the F1 racing circuit, with the flamboyant Dr. Vijay Mallya at its helm, have drove Indias youth to Motorsports like never before.

The viewership of all forms of racing is increasing exponentially even as you read this line. Off-road racing and various ATV racing championships, with grueling challenges like the Great Himalayan Car Rally, that are attracting participation in ever increasing numbers, have been gaining traction among the petroholic crowd.
Moreover, the rise of numerous private race-clubs, some of which have a special division for off-road racing, will ensure that Motorsports will keep gaining ground. Association with our Team under this developing scenario will earn you a status of a Patron of Motorsports allowing you to reap rich dividends in future by way of large scale visibility and brand recall in the growing racing circuit.
