Name:

StudyGuide / 1 Semestre 2011/ 1 e 2 anos F2

Group:

The objective of this study guide is to help you organize your studies in July.

Learning English is a skill and, as such, it can be improved. But you must get actively involved in your
own learning process. You should try and enjoy the experience of learning a foreign language: make it a pleasure, not a chore. Find out what works like magic for you and focus on the aspects of language that you need to learn more effectively. Then, devise a plan of action and set yourself achievable goals. Keep in mind where you want to get and how well youll need to prepare so as to get there.

Set Yourself Achievable Goals

You know how much time you can dedicate to learning English, but a short time each day will produce better, longer-term results than a full day at the weekend and then nothing for two weeks.

Take Responsibility
Once you've been presented with new English words or vocabulary, you should use it, review it, and even play with it. It's the only way you'll get it to stick in your brain and start to make sense.

Learn to Learn
You never finish learning, nor do you ever finish learning how to learn. Think and work independently. Don't depend solely on your teacher. Have a vision that motivates you. Participate in any related activities. Help others to learn. Learn from your mistakes and failures.

1. Reflecting Upon Your Study Attitudes

Compare your attitude towards your English course at the beginning of the first bimester and at the end of the second. What has changed and what remained the same? How did this attitude interfere with your final performance? What was your attendance to classes like? How involved were you and to what extent did you take ownership of your learning? Remember: learning is an on-going process, and you have to try and work on it a little every day. What was your attitude in class like? Do you think youve been able to focus and take notes properly or do you think youve been easily distracted by people talking or by any other everyday life concerns? What aspects of language did you retain? On the whole, can you recollect how you have organised your timetable so as to plan your selfstudy? The rule of thumb here is for you to weekly allocate a given number of hours and schedule your self-study just as if you were attending a class.

Prior to the remedial work lessons at the end of this year, make sure to revise all the language observed in class and then make a list of questions to ask your teacher. Its important that you do so before you start your self-study programme. In your notebook, are your notes clearly organised into different sections or subjects, such as Grammar & Vocabulary or unit topicalised? Have you done your homework on a regular basis? If so, have you checked the answer key and clarified your doubts? When doing homework, did you try and use a monolingual dictionary to add up to comprehension? Have you re-done all the tests? If so, have you checked the answer key and clarified your doubts? Have you ever tried doing the exercises on Mbile Virtual? There is a lot of practice on Use of English there, including suggestions on how to go about each and every single part of the exam.

2. Reflecting on you study strategies

What are the successful strategies that you use to study other subjects that can also be used at English? Think about your favourite subjects and what you do well that can also be applicable to English. Get used to reading texts not only for general understanding. Instead, learn how to notice phrasal verbs, dependent prepositions and word formation features. You could underline these items in different colours, so as to help you better prepare for your exam. Read this study guide carefully, do the activities and make up questions about the material. Then, go a little further and take notes on language aspects you seemed not to have noticed before. Dont forget how Open Cloze and Word Formation tasks are devised. Do all the activities in the students book and workbook again (Units 5, 6, 7 and 8). Do the activities that were not assigned by your teacher as well. Do all the tests again. Pay attention to the teachers correction and try to understand the mistakes youve made. In case youre still in doubt, make sure to bring up these questions in class. If youre confused about grammar mistakes youve made, why dont you try some extra grammar exercises online? There are fabulous tips and further practice on: http://www.learnenglish.de/grammarpage.htm Review your notes and focus on the way words are spelt in English. Remember: in English, what you see is not always what you hear. Double attention to irregular forms of verbs. Avoid translating as much as possible. Make sure to resort to translation if you use it as a means of comparison only. Also make sure that your notebook notes are in English, and not in Portuguese. Remember to always make sentences using the vocabulary you have learnt. Get used to referring back to an English-English dictionary. If you cant write sentences on your own, you can refer to a monolingual dictionary and copy as many examples given as possible. Check out these useful links: http://dictionary.cambridge.org/ http://dictionaries.cambridge.org/default.asp?dict=P (phrasal verbs) http://www.thefreedictionary.com/

3. Reflecting Upon YourAttitude Towards English

Do you ever read the news in English? This can help you improve on your vocabulary and give you valuable insights on word formation. Check the section Words in the News on www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish. Try reading a newspaper in English once a week. A good suggestion is: http://www.guardian.co.uk. Do you ever play games in English? You can learn and have some fun by doing some extra exercises available on:http://www.learnenglish.de/gamespage.htm Do you know how to find synonyms and antonyms online? Try going to http://thesaurus.com. Have you ever tried and checked your performance in a Cambridge exam? You can get free samples of past papers on: http://www.flo-joe.co.uk. It is also useful to check the free booklet on: http://www.cambridgeesol.org/resources/teacher/fce.html#08. Another hot tip is: http://www.examenglish.com/FCE/index.php Do you ever watch films with subtitles in English? Choose your favourite TV series and try watching at least one episode with subtitles in English every week. This helps you pay more attention to the way pronunciation features are related with spelling and enhances opportunities for you to memorize new language. Not surprisingly, youll also notice what sounds more natural in the way native speakers use vocabulary items and expressions. Its a good idea to have this book, already recommended: MACMILLAN ENGLISH GRAMMAR IN CONTEXT (MEG)*, intermediate level with key, Michael Vince, Macmillan.

4. What you need to know FCE Result

Skills Work Reading

Make sure to re-do all the reading tasks youve had in all of the four tests throughout this semester. Then compare and contrast your answers to the keys published on Vered@. Part 1 Multiple Choice It consists of a text, followed by eight multiple-choice questions which test the understanding of content and text organisation. The text may be taken from, for example, an article or a modern novel. Questions may focus on the main ideas or details in the text, and on the attitudes or opinions expressed. You may also be asked to deduce the meaning of a word or phrase and to demonstrate understanding of references, such as pronouns, within the text. Additionally, questions may focus on the tone of the text or the writers purpose, as well as the use of exemplification or comparison. To answer these questions you may need to infer the meaning from clues in the text, a skill which is an essential part of reading ability. The questions are presented in the same order as the information in the text so that you can follow the development of the writers ideas. Part 2 Gapped Text It consists of one text from which seven sentences have been removed and placed in jumbled order after the text, together with an eighth sentence which does not fit in any of the gaps. You are required to decide from where in the text each sentence has been removed. The task tests understanding of how texts are structured. Rather than concentrating on individual sentences, you need to be able to follow the development of ideas,

opinions and events through the text as a whole, using your understanding of text coherence and cohesion devices. Part 3 Multiple Matching It consists of one long text or up to six shorter texts, preceded by 15 questions. You are required to locate the specific information which matches the questions. To do this, you need to understand detail, attitude or opinion in the question and locate a section of text where that idea is expressed, discounting ideas in other sections which may appear similar but which do not reflect the whole of the question accurately. Some of the options may be correct for more than one question, and there may be more than one correct answer to some questions.

Use of English Grammar & Vocabulary

Part 1 Multiple-Choice Cloze You are required to draw on their lexical knowledge and understanding of the text in order to fill the gaps. Some questions test at a phrasal level, such as collocations and set phrases. Other questions test meaning at sentence level or beyond, with more processing of the text required. A lexico-grammatical element may be involved, such as when you have to choose the option which fits correctly with a following preposition or verb form.

Make sure to re-do the Multiple-Choice Cloze tasks in the tests youve taken during the semester. Then compare and contrast your answers to the keys published on Vered@. Re-do the Multiple-Choice Cloze task on page 88 of your students book. Re-do the Multiple-Choice Cloze task on page 49 of your workbook.

Part 2 Open Cloze The focus of the gapped words is either grammatical, such as articles, auxiliaries, prepositions, pronouns, verb tenses and forms, or lexico-grammatical, such as phrasal verbs, linkers and words within fixed phrases. The answer will always be a single word. In some cases, there may be more than one possible answer and this is allowed for in the mark scheme. The absence or misuse of punctuation is ignored, although spelling, as in all parts of the Use of English paper, must be correct.

Make sure to re-do the Open Cloze tasks in the tests youve taken tests youve taken during the semester. Then compare and contrast your answers to the keys published on Vered@. Re-do the Open Cloze task on page 15 of your workbook. Extra Tip: visit http://www.flo-joe.co.uk and choose: FCE, use of English, open cloze exercises.

Part 3 Word Formation

You are required to form an appropriate word from given stem words to fill each gap.The focus of this task is primarily lexical, though an understanding of structure is also required. It tests your knowledge of how prefixes, suffixes, internal changes and compounds are used in forming words. You may be required to demonstrate understanding ofthe text beyond sentence level. Extra Tip: visit http://www.flo-joe.co.uk and choose: FCE, use of English, Word Formation exercises.

Part 4 Key Word Transformations Each question contains three parts: a lead-in sentence, a key word, and a second sentence of which only the beginning and end are given. You have to fill the gap in the second sentence so that the completed sentence is similar in meaningto the lead-in sentence. The gap must be filled with between two and five words, one of which must be the key word. The key word must not be changed in any way. In this part of

the paper, the focus is both lexical and grammatical and a range of structures is tested. The ability to express a message in different ways shows flexibility and resource in the use of language.

Extra Tip: visit http://www.flo-joe.co.uk and choose: FCE, use of English, Key Word Transformation exercises.
