Cycle Test I 18th August 2012 III Year Mechanical Engineering ME 2301 - THERMAL ENGINEERING
Time: 1 Hours Answer ALL questions. PART A (5 x 2 = 10 Marks) 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. What are the assumptions made on air-standard efficiency. Define compression ratio. Define mean effective pressure Mention four Thermodynamic processes involved in otto cycle. Explain supersaturated flow in steam nozzle. PART B ( 40 Marks) 6. 7. (a) Derive the air standard efficiency of Diesel cycle Derive an expression for mass flow of steam through nozzle, maximum mass flow and critical pressure ratio. OR A C.I. Engine working on diesel cycle has the following data, stroke = 250mm, cylinder Bore = 150mm clearance volume= 400 cm3 (i). If the fuel injection takes place at constant pressure for 5% of the stroke, find the cycle efficiency. (ii). Now, the fuel cut off is delayed 5 to 8 % of the stroke, find the percentage loss in efficiency. In a steam nozzle, the steam expands from 4 bar to 1 bar. The initial velocity is 60 m/sec and initial temperature is 2000C. Determine the exit velocity if the nozzle efficiency is 92%. OR Dry saturated steam at a pressure of 11bar enters a convergent-divergent nozzle and leaves at a pressure of 2 bar. If the flow is adiabatic and frictionless Determine. (i). The exit velocity of steam. (ii). Ratio of cross section at exit and that at throat. Assume index of adiabatic expansion to be 1.135 [8] [16] Maximum: 50 Marks
