Experiment 1:
Topic Purpose Materials : Volumetric analysis Acid base : To determine the exact concentration of a mineral acid, HXO4, and to determine the relative atomic mass of the element X. : KA 1 is a mineral acid, HXO4 KA 2 is a solution containing 1.70 g of OH- ions per dm3. Phenolphthalein as indicator. Apparatus : (i) One wash bottle filled with distilled water.

(ii) One 50cm3 burette. (iii) One white tile. (iv) Three 250cm3 titration flask. (v) One retort stand and clamp. (vi) One 25cm3 pipette and pipette filler. Procedure : (a) 1. 25.0 cm3 of KA 2 is pipetted into a titration flask. 2. Two or three drops of phenolphthalein indicator are added and this solution with KA 1 is titrated. 3. The readings are recorded in the table below. 4. The titration is repeated twice to achieve accurate results. Results table below. : (b) The titration readings are recorded in the

Titration

Rough First 47.90

Accurate Second 43.85

Final 24.00 reading/cm3 Initial 0.00 24.00 20.00 reading/cm3 Volume of KA 24.00 23.90 23.85 1/cm3 (i) 25.0cm3 of KA 2 required 23.88 cm3 of KA 1 for a complete reaction. (ii) Average titre value = = 23.88cm3

Questions (c)

: Calculate the concentration, in mol dm-3, of mineral acid HXO4 in solution KA 1. Concentration of KA 2 = = 0.1 mol dm-3 (d) Write a balanced ionic equation for the reaction between solution KA 1 and solution KA 2. The ionic equation:

(e)

Calculate the concentration, in mol dm-3, of mineral acid HXO4 in solution KA 1.

M = 0.1047 mol dm-3

(f)

If the concentration of mineral acid HXO4 in solution KA2 is 20.1 g dm-3, calculate the relative molecular mass of HXO4.

(g)

Using the answer to (f), determine the relative atomic mass of element X. Let y = relative atomic mass of X HXO4 = (1) + y + (16 x 4) = 192.0 y = 127.0

(h)

Suggest an identity for element X. Element X is iodine.

Conclusion : The exact concentration of mineral acid, HXO4 is 0.1047 mol dm3

. The relative atomic mass of the element X is 127.0. Element X is iodine.
