La mayora de las
conversaciones que
escucho a m alrededor
enen que ver con el
regreso a clases: que si
tengo que comenzar a
comprar los uniformes,
que solo faltan tantas
semanas, que si no se
qu maestro me va
regreso a clases.
A parte de que las clases pronto
comienzan, tambin se aproxima el
mes de la herencia hispana. Vea
nuestro calendario de eventos para
que se entere de acvidades para
celebrar nuestra herencia cultural

este tema. Hablando de hispanidad,
aprovecho para invitarles a leer
nuestra seccin, Lano de Impacto
tome unos minutos para conocer
al Rev. David Valle, quien al recibir el
ao pasado un reconocimiento de la
Ciudad de Rochester (Hispanic Heritage

Most of the conversaons that I hear
around me have to do with back to
school: I have to start to buy uniforms,
there are only so many weeks le
before school begins, who will be my
school teachers this year, I need to
take advantage of what remains of
the summer, it will start ge ng cold
soon, and so forth. Obviously, we are
transioning to a new season... the fall
season in Rochester, which is also our
school season.
We realize the task of searching for
school informaon so to help parents
out we included some resources in
this edion of the newspaper. We
focused on the Rochester City School
District but there is certainly other
great resources found on the internet
for other school districts, including
the suburbs. Ida Perez, one of our
columnists, also oers a few ps to
establish rounes that help prepare
children for back to school.
Besides school starng soon, Hispanic
Heritage Month also approaches.
See our calendar of events to learn
of community acvies planned to
celebrate our Lano heritage! In our
next edion we will be elaborang
more on this topic. Speaking of
Hispanic Heritage, I invite you to take
a few minutes to read our secon,
Lano to Watch. Youll meet Rev.
David Valle who was inspired to open
a trilingual church aer receiving a
City of Rochester recognion (Hispanic
Heritage Commiee - LOPI Award) in
2011.
We would like to hear of more stories
from people in our community who
make a posive dierence who
knows, they may be the next Lano to

Recursos para el regreso a la escuela
Traducido por la Editora
Ya seas un padre o educador, uliza
estos recursos y consejos para
prepararte para el nuevo ao escolar.
Chequeos y vacunas
clases. Si su hijo estar parcipando en
una acvidad deporva, su mdico de
familia puede que tenga que rmar un
formulario de liberacin para permir
que su hijo parcipe en dicho deporte.
La mayora de las escuelas requiere
que las vacunas de inmunizacin de su
hijo estn actualizadas. Recuerde que
cada Estado ene requisitos diferentes
de inmunizacin. Infrmele a su
mdico si usted ene alguna pregunta
o inquietud acerca de las vacunas que
su hijo est programado para recibir.
El ser admido a una escuela puede
requerir documentacin de vacunas,
as que asegrese de ponerse en
contacto con su escuela para averiguar
lo que necesita y asegrese de traer
cualquier formulario que el proveedor
de salud necesite llenar y rmar de
antemano.
Averige
si su familia calica para el programa
nacional de almuerzo escolar o salud
subsidiada.
Ayuda con las Asignaciones
El hacer las asignaciones (o tareas)
puede proporcionar muchos benecios
para los nios. Puede mejorar la
memoria y comprensin, desarrollar
habilidades de estudio y ensearles
a cmo administrar el empo. Usted
puede ayudar proveyndoles a
sus hijos un lugar tranquilo y bien
iluminado para hacer su tarea y darle
asistencia, pero nunca completando
las respuestas.
Comprando arculos escolares
Durante el mes de agosto, algunos
Estados ofrecen un sale tax holiday,
lo que signica que determinados
productos no cobrarn impuestos
durante un periodo de empo
establecido. Esta es una gran
oportunidad para ahorrar dinero
en arculos de regreso a la escuela,
incluyendo ropa, zapatos y otros
suministros.
Planique proveer desayunos y
almuerzos saludables
Mientras se prepara para enviar a
sus hijos a la escuela, recuerde que
la nutricin es un factor importante
en su rendimiento acadmico. Los
estudios han demostrado que los nios
que comen saludable, desayunos y
almuerzos balanceados estn ms
saludable.
Back to School Resources
USA.gov
Whether youre a parent or educator,
use these resources and ps to prepare
for the new school year.
Check-Ups and Immunizaons
Its a good idea to take your child in for
a physical and eye exam before school
starts. If your child will be parcipang
in a sports acvity, your family doctor
may have to sign a release form to
permit your child to parcipate.
Most schools require your childs
immunizaon shots are up-to-date.
Remember that each state has dierent
immunizaon requirements. Let your
healthcare provider know if you have
any quesons or concerns about the
vaccines your child is scheduled to
receive.
School entry may require
documentaon of immunizaon
records, so be sure to contact your
school ahead of me to nd out what
might be required, and be sure to bring
any school forms for your healthcare
provider to ll out and sign. Failure to
keep immunizaons up-to-date could
result in your child not being able to
aend school. Its also helpful to keep
a copy of the records for yourself and
your childs school.
Financial Assistance for Families
There are several programs and
resources available to ease the
nancial burden of going back to
school, including low cost lunches and
aordable health insurance. Find out
if your family qualies for the Naonal
School Lunch Program or subsidized
health care.
Homework Help
Homework can provide many benets
for children. It can improve memory
and comprehension, develop study
skills, and teach children how to
manage me. You can help by making
sure your kids have a quiet, well-lit
place to do homework and provide
assistance, but not complete answers.
Shopping for School Supplies
During the month of August, some
states oer a sales tax holiday, which
means that certain products wont be
taxed during a set period of me. This
is a great opportunity to save money on
back-to-school items including clothes,
shoes, and supplies.
Plan Healthy Breakfasts and Lunches
As you prepare to send your children
back to school, remember that
nutrion is an important factor in
academic performance. Studies have
shown that children who eat healthful,
balanced breakfasts and lunches are
more alert throughout the school day
and earn higher grades than those who
have an unhealthy diet.

federal ofrece muchos programas
escuelas pblicas y colegios
comunitarios (community colleges).
Los programas de educacin para
adultos del Gobierno incluyen:
Preparacin para el GED. Un diploma
de educacin secundaria (high school)
es clave para obtener un mejor
empleo. Los programas de educacin
para adultos preparan a los estudiantes
para pasar el GED, una cercacin
equivalente al diploma tradicional de
high school. Los estudiantes aprenden
materias bsicas como lgebra, sica,
civismo e historia. Es un programa
ideal para personas que necesitan
terminar este nivel de educacin para
obtener un mejor trabajo. Se puede
encontrar un centro para tomar el GED
(en ingls) usando el cdigo postal al
entrar a gedtesngservice.com.
Capacitacin tcnica. Los programas
de clases para adultos tambin
incluyen capacitacin tcnica de
trabajo y cercaciones en varias
reas. Los estudiantes pueden tomar
clases de computacin, plomera,
administracin, electrnica, mecnica,
enfermera y carpintera, entre otras
cosas. Muchas de estas clases son
desarrolladas en conjunto con los
empleadores de la localidad para
que as los estudiantes tengan las
habilidades que necesitan para
obtener los trabajos disponibles en el
lugar donde viven.
Clases de ingls. Estas clases estn
diseadas para adultos que desean
aprender a hablar, leer y escribir en
ingls.

tendra?, sera grande o pequeo?
5 - Qu historia contara t tapiz?
I MAGI NANDO TU PROPI O LI BRO
A pesar
colores, crayones, papel, alegra y toda
t imaginacin para comenzar tu propio
libro. Y lo mejor de todo es que t eres el
propio autor de tu obra.
Feliz imaginacin!

Puerto Rico. Juntos criaron a 4 varones y 3
hembras. Me considero puertorriqueo de
ciudadana americana.
Cmo llego a Rochester?
haba establecido aqu me ofreci ayuda;
ellas; The Health Associaon, Catholic
Family Center, y RESTART Substance Abuse
Services.
Fueron
tantas las personas
que me seguan que la
iglesia empez a crecer
en nmero y Dios segua
dando palabras de
consuelo y esperanza a
todos ellos; fue cuando
entend y sen el
llamado a ser Pastor. Fui
llamado por Dios para
hacer lo que ya estaba
haciendo hasta que
nalmente no deseaba
ninguna otra cosa sino
ganarme todas las almas
para el reino de Dios.
Cuntos aos ene como Pastor y cul
es la iglesia que usted dirige? Tienen
Center. Nuestra iglesia es trilinge:
espaol, ingles y ASL y tenemos servicios
LOPI (Lano of Posive Inuence). Qu
lmamente, fui parte de Rock the Lakes,
una organizacin internacional que vino
a Rochester y fue muy benecioso para
nuestra comunidad. Originalmente, no
haba el alcance para los hispanoparlantes
y a travs de nuestras sugerencias pudimos
tener personal y ministerios totalmente
en espaol. Tambin tenemos estudios
Jesucristo. Me lleno de alegra y emocin
cuando puedo ayudar encaminar a una
persona en esa trayectoria.
Cuales son las mayores necesidades que
usted ha visto en la comunidad hispana?
La pobreza y la decadencia de la dignidad;
Dios!

LATINO DE IMPACTO
Rev. Davi d Val l e
By Vanessa Kogan
Translated by Editor
In an interview with Rev. David Valle, he
speaks about his life, his new church and
how a local award impacted his career as
a Pastor.
Tell us a lile about your life, where were
you born and where is your family from?
I was born in New York City from Puerto
Rican parents who were in search of a beer
lifestyle for their family. My father is from
Aguadilla and my mother from Mana,
Puerto Rico. They raised 4 boys and 3 girls.
I consider myself to be Puerto Rican, and of
course, of American cizenship.
How did you get to Rochester?
I arrived to the city of Rochester in 1977
with hopes of beering my life. I used
to live a life of addicons. A close friend
had already established himself here and
oered to help me. I was given a new
opportunity, I met my wife and for the rst
me I felt that I had a future.
While my addicons connued, and aer
many failures, God rescued me in 1984 and
I accepted him into my life. My life took
a posive turn and I understood that God
had a plan for my life that was designed
even before the foundaons of this earth
it was at this point that I understood that I
had to do something construcve with my
life.
Tell us a lile more of your story and how
did you become a Pastor?
One of my rst jobs in Rochester was
working in an auto shop. This job helped
me connect for the rst me with the
community and I was able to network
with dierent agencies like The Health
Associaon, Catholic Family Center, and
RESTART Substance Abuse Services.
Through these connecons, especially
when I began working for RESTART, I was
able (and in a very direct way) share my
life-experience with clients and vice-versa.
I would invite them to the church I was
fellowshipping in and people would actually
go . They wanted what I had, my faith in
God. They would also see the tesmony in
me of a person who was prospering in Him.
Many people aended church because of
my invitaons and the church began to
grow in numbers. God would give them
comfort and hope it was at this me of
my life that I understood that I was called
to be a Pastor. I was called for this by God
to do what I was already doing -- I desired
nothing else but to witness to others and
win souls for the Kingdom of God.
How many years have you been a Pastor
and what is the name of your church? Do
you have services in Spanish?
I have 18 years of experience and studies
and was ordained by the church I used to
aend to as an Associate Pastor. I connued
my career at another congregaon as an
Associate Pastor for 11 years and currently
I am the Senior Pastor of a new church
in the heart of our city, in downtown
Rochester. Its only been 5 months since
my wife and I, along with a small group of
leaders launched our new church, River
Citychurch (La Iglesia que Fluye) in the
Auditorium Center. Our church is actually
trilingual: Spanish, English and ASL and we
have services every Sunday at 10:00am.
On Fridays we have an all-English dynamic
Youth Night for youth ages 12 to 17 years
old at 7:00pm.
We understand that you were given a
recognion by the City of Rochester the
LOPI Award (Lano of Posive Inuence) in
2011. What did this Award mean to you?
To have been elected by the disnguished
Hispanic Heritage Commiee from Mayor

Richardss o ce is an unforgeable tribute.
Its so, that I understood that this was part
of Gods plan for a new vision for our city
and our community.
Tell us about what programs have been
created for Lanos in your church. How
are you connected to these programs and
why are these programs so important?
As a church we have a mission to guide our
community with simple, praccal godly
principles so that they could be prosperous
in their daily walk.
We strive to provide good programs that
at the same me can be measured for
their success and eecveness in the
community and show progressive results.
If they cant accomplish this they would be
like a simple bandage to a serious problem
of self-esteem and dignity.
For example, there are programs like
FIDELIS who want to reach out to Lanos
who do not have access to health insurance.
We have provided a place at our locaon
so that they are within the reach of people.
Recently, I was part of Rock the Lakes, an
internaonal organizaon that came to
Rochester and was of great benet to our
community. Originally, there was no scope
for the Spanish-speaking, and through our
suggesons we had sta and ministries
provided in Spanish. We also have Bible
studies for deaf Hispanics.
How can people help or be part of these
programs?
One of the best aributes of human kind
is their desire to help others. We need to
nd resources and teams of trained people
who can handle the basic needs of our
community. People must be accessible and
treat others with dignity in order to build
condence in them.
What do you like best of your job?
My job is to help the human race, recognize
that God has a plan for their lives and that
He has given us the means of aaining this
through his son Jesus Christ. I am lled
with joy and excitement when I can help
steer a person in that path.
What have been the greatest needs that
you see in the Hispanic community?
Poverty and the decline of dignity; also
a lack of faith in God that in turn aects
moral values. We need to create and
design programs on television and on the
radio that would guide and educate. We
need seasoned people to coach others on
how to succeed and teach them how they
can apply principles and eventually set
advanced goals.
Which have been your greatest obstacles
when its me to work with the community?
1. To break the poverty mentality.
2.The cycle of programs that are not
eecve.
What is your message to the Hispanic
community?
Any civilizaon that has put God rst
has thrived. We are a people who have
knowledge of God and this will help us
believe in the promises found in the Bible.
We are an arsc people of many God-
given talents; therefore, lets shake-o
uncertainty and lets ght for what belongs
to us in Christ Jesus. Let us not sele for
what we have believed is our desny. Christ
said, Whoever believes in me, though he
dies, yet shall he live. Wake up people and
start to live for God!
