Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION

Communication, as defined by Wikipedia, is the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behavior. There are two ways to communicate verbal and non-verbal communication. In this subject, we are going to focus on the verbal communication also known as the oral communication.

In the modern society, speech is the most abundant way of communicating. Talking to other people is considered as an escape from stress. Expressing your ideas is easiest done with speeches. Admitting ones feelings is best understandable through communicating. The world without oral communication is a world without music or a world without color, its simply boring and incomplete.

Improving ones oral communication skills is a good investment for a person to have a better future for it will help us effectively communicate with our future clients. Although foreigners wont care about your grammar, its a need to improve your knowledge and fix your grammar. Also, you should make yourself understandable to others, especially speaking the English language. You should have a good accent to avoid others from misunderstanding you. The best accent out in the world is the American accent. Brought by many influential media, the American accent is the most understandable accent. Unlike the other accents like the British accent and Australian accent, American accent is plain. It has little amount of details and not that tongue twisting thats why it is considered as the easiest accent to learn.

In this study, we will discuss about the perception of students with regards to improving ones oral communication skills, specifically, through communicating with foreigners. Whether people believe that communicating with foreigners will help you acquire the accent you want and help you improve yourself grammar or the people believe that you can acquire nothing from talking but a simple chat. With the help of our respondents from New Era University, College of Business Administration, the researcher is prompted to conduct a study on the perception of BS Accountancy students with regards to communicating with foreigners as a way in improving one's oral communication skills.

Chapter 2 METHODOLOGY

This chapter features the research design, research sample, research instrument and technique, and treatment of the data. This chapter will be dedicated to the description of the methods and procedures done in order to obtain the data, how they will be analysed, interpreted, and how the conclusion will be met.

REASEARCH DESIGN

Research methodology is the systematic study of methods that are, can be, or have been applied within a discipline. The research design has been considered a "blueprint" for research, dealing with at least four problems: what questions to study, what data are relevant, what data to collect, and how to analyze the results.

This study made an assessment about the perception of students with regards to improving ones oral communication skills, specifically, through communicating with foreigners. The researcher will utilize the descriptive-normative type of research. For this study, the research will use qualitative approach. The qualitative method permits a flexible and iterative approach. The value of qualitative research can best be understood by examining its characteristics. One of the primary advantages of qualitative research is that it is more open to the adjusting and refining of research ideas as an inquiry proceeds.

RESEARCH SAMPLE

Respondents. The study will have the students as respondents. They must pass the following criteria to be chosen as a respondent: (1) must be a current student of New Era University, (2) must be first year BS Accountancy student, (3) can be a male or female, (4) must at least three experience talking to a foreigner personally. The researcher chose these respondents because they are the ones who are easy to reach and are the most effective at the same time.

Sample. All of these participants were selected through random sampling. This sampling method is conducted where each member of a population has an equal opportunity to become part of the sample. As all members of the population have an equal chance of becoming a research participant, this is said to be the most efficient sampling procedure. In order to conduct this sampling strategy, the researcher defined the population first, listed down all the members of the population, and then selected members to make the sample. RESEARCH INSTRUMENT Questionnaire. This instrument was constructed by the researchers to establish the sociodemographic profile of the student. The instrument determined, among others, the gender, students block and the age of the respondents. The frequency of them talking to a foreigner is also included in the questionnaire, the nationality of the foreigner theyve talked to, and their impression of the correctness of the grammar and the accent of the foreigner with their perception whether it is acquirable or not. TREATMENT OF THE DATA The responses that will be made by the students will be interpreted and presented in paragraph form in the next chapter, discussion. Responses to the questionnaire by the students will be statistically analysed with the data requirements of the study. Descriptive statistics such as frequency count and percent are considered. For treating the responses, the researcher used the following statistical tools to interpret the gathered data. Percentage= F/N Where: F= Frequency N= Total number of respondents

Chapter 3 DISCUSSION

In this chapter, the data is gathered from the students in relation to research objectives. This chapter discusses the result of the structured questionnaire responded by 11 participants. Before the initiation of the research study, the significance, rationale and purpose of the study were provided to the respondents. Furthermore, the respondents have also been given the assurance that all the data they will give are used for the purpose of the research only and the identities of the respondents will be confidential.

The other questions in the questionnaire dont need to be in a table. Next is if the respondents had a hard time understanding the foreigners. Maybe because of the influence of Hollywood to the world, people have familiarized themselves with the American accent.

My curiosity also asked the respondents whether they find the foreigners accent acquirable. Ten of them answered yes, it can be acquired. This means that talking to a foreigner is really a way to improve ones accent. A following question was asked, how acquirable was it? Five respondents answered very easy to be acquired, three answered easy, two with not easy and one with slightly easy. Although there are to who answered not easy, majority of the respondents said that it is easy to acquire the foreigners accent when you talk to them.

About the foreigners grammar, how did the respondents find the grammar of the foreigners? Seven answered it is good, two with very good and two with slightly good. The respondents find the foreigners grammar good, with some flaws but forgivable and forgettable.
