NGCP upgrades transmission line in South Luzon The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has started work on the upgrading of Kalayaan-Bay 230-kiloVolt (kV) transmission line in South Luzon. This is part of the transmission service providers efforts to maintain the N-1 provision for the existing Kalayaan-Bay corridor that could allow all possible generation dispatch scenarios for the associated power plants. (The N-1 contingency enables the power grid to sustain its integrity in case of loss of a major component of the system.) Kalayaan-Bay line is an important corridor that provides operational flexibility, particularly during maintenance of the associated transmission lines. It also complements the Binan Muntinlupa Upgrading Project by strengthening this alternate corridor for the generated power coming from the natural gas plants and the Mak-Ban Geothermal Power Plant. The Kalayaan-Bay line helps deliver power to Taytay Substation and also supplies Kalayaan plant during its operation as pump load. Upgrading of this facility is also expected to reduce system loss during pumping of Kalayaan units as the Kalayaan-Bay corridor provides the shortest route from generation sources and offers flexibility in the dispatch of power plants (i.e. Calaca, Sta. Rita, Mak-Ban and Kalayaan) in the area. Upgrading of Kalayaan-Bay transmission line includes the installation of four 795 MCM aluminum steel-reinforced conductors and putting up of additional eighteen 230-KV power circuit breakers. NGCP is a privately owned corporation in charge of operating, maintaining, and developing the countrys power grid. It transmits high-voltage electricity through power superhighways that include the interconnected system of transmission lines and towers, substations and related assets. NGCPs regular maintenance activities and expansion projects aim to enhance the reliability and quality of electricity delivered to customers. ### (Photos on the next page)
