JULY

G AU T E N G

N O M A D S

2012

I NSI D E RIG H T
CAPTAIN SHOUTS FORE!
I thought the welcome we got at Glenvista was magnicent and, as usual, the bar was well supported after prizegiving, especially by the locals. Apparently, it was a close run thing for Gautengs version of Last Man Standing, between Gavin and Les Floyd, both of whom could crawl home! I played with the Vice Captain, Shaun Parsons, and despite their best efforts we managed to fend off the challenge from Ian Bradley and Richard Isaac (both new tie recipients that evening). Thanks Shaun. One serious post script to the game, is that there were AGAIN a large number of people who did not put their scores in within the required time. A total of 8 of you will be getting an e-mail from me, as well as the 16 people who have been cut by 2 shots, as they STILL have not put in their score from Glendower in. Gents, I know I am probably preaching to the converted through this report, but it is your own responsibility to ensure that your score is in. Even if you have given it to your club to enter, it remains your responsibility to check that they have done it. We are investigating a new system whereby if you have not put your score for a Nomads game in within the 72 hours, we will enter it for you, as a penalty score. Maybe that will produce a better result! Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the Durban July weekend, because the National Executive had organised a meeting at the Eastern Cape Anniversary weekend, which clashed with the July. For once the National M a n a g e m e n t M e e t i n g w a s ve r y productive and a detailed report is included in this months Inside Right, for those of you who are interested. The major outcome was that Gauteng has been asked to host the 50th Nationals Tournament in 2015, rather than their usual spot, which would have been in 2018. If anyone would like to volunteer for the job of Nationals Co-ordinator, applications are open! The anniversary game at Humewood was almost washed out due to heavy rain the day and night before. The hollows on the course were ooded, up to ten inches deep in places and you had to plot your way around the course with even more care than normal to avoid the ad hoc water hazards, then the greens were rm and fast! I managed to start with 7 black-outs, but avoided the matchbox, as there was a 14 pointer in from the morning eld, then the wind picked up. I could not stay for prize-giving, as my ight left at the same time, so I am not sure what the winning score was, but the general scores were atrocious in the morning and must have been worse in the afternoon! Hold thumbs for the Highveld Trophy this week, which is to be played between Northerns, Easterns and ourselves, at Blue Valley. We are the reigning champions, having won it at CCJ last year, when we hosted the Trophy, so lets hope we can hold onto it! The Andrew Mentis Golf Day is late in August (24th) and Spero is still looking for 4-balls for the game. It is the one opportunity for you to bring your nonNomads mates to see what Nomads is all about. Provided there is one Nomad in each 4-ball, you can bring 3 guests to the game. All the funds raised go directly to the chosen charity for the year and are applied directly to the cause (so nothing goes missing through administration fees, or whatever!) Last year, we built and equipped a computer centre for The Living Link in Parkhurst, who train intellectually challenged young adults to have employment opportunities and thereby become integrated into the mainstream of society. Each and every Nomad can be proud of his contribution to a long string of equally worthy causes through the last 52 years. Please give Spero, and Elizier Ministries, your support.

BLAKES BLAH! BLAH!

NIGEL ALLAN LANGLEY TJIRPEE FORD 14/02/1930 10/07/2012 Doing this so soon after the last one certainly does not make it any easier especially when the second one is possibly even closer than the first one. Nigel joined Transvaal Nomads in May 1978 and had a wonderful career until his untimely motor car accident a few years back. He played 353 games; this included just one credit which he, and a number of others, were given when one of our games at Crown Mines was washed out. The replay game was arranged for the very next Thursday and if you were there on the due date and couldnt play on the make up date you were given a playing credit. Nigel and the late Pierre Lombard had booked to go to Cape Town on the Blue Train and hence this was the only game that Nigel ever missed, as far as I can recall. His Nomadic career itself was one of great participation :- He won the Division 3 times, was Runner Up 14 times. Mentis once. Handley three times. Gary Player twice (scoring 20 points when winning the 1983 final) and Runner Up once. Gary Player Plate once. 1 Silver Tray (43 points off a 10 handicap and 21 points off a 6 handicap the next month but he never ever won a Matchbox). His handicap, over the years, ranged from 6 to 25. We became good friends from the start of his Nomadic career and just seven months after his induction I asked him to be the Secretary on my Andrew Mentis Committee, this then led to me bringing him in the following year as my Secretary on the Main Executive. A portfolio that he was to continue holding meticulously for the next 10 years. As soon as he was eligible he entered for Nationals and, as far as I know, he p l aye d c o n s e c u t i ve N a t i o n a l Tournaments from 1980 to 1997, at most of which he performed admirably and very competitively. It was quite incredible the records he kept of his golf, amongst other things. I do believe that up to and including his last game he had kept every single card of every golf game he had ever played. When he went to play at a particular course he would take the card with him, from the last game he had played at that course. On that card was the names of the fourball with whom he had played, how many putts he had taken, the result of the bet, what club he used on the short holes, etc. etc. Our love and thoughts go out to his daughter Janet, son Lionel, son-in-law and daughter-in-law and the four grandchildren, who have asked me to thank the 30 Nomads and wives that attended his funeral (I was honoured to be one of the pallbearers). May he Rest in Peace, enjoy good golfing and better health on greener playing fields. MONTHLY GAME
Its always tough for a course on the Highveld in the middle of Winter and understandably Glenvista was no exception. The course was in good nick and the greens were frighteningly slick, to the extent that I watched the nearest the pin less than a metre on the 8th have a quick three putt. Golfers have a tendency to say that this is an easy course but to do that you are certainly underestimating this course totally. I, in fact, believe that Glenvista has the combined four most difficult short holes, but thats me. It is also a pity that there were only 7 Senior Tees on the course (thankfully four of those are on the aforementioned short holes), they used to have 12 but were told to scrap five of them. All things being said thank you Glenvista, as always, for your great hospitality, Nomads are always made very welcome at your Golf Club; the snacks were very good and plentiful. Our Captain had another good afternoon with his seventh consecutive bet and win. Welcome to inductee Mark Pledger, by the sounds of things you are diving in f e e t f i r s t w i t h yo u r p ro p o s e d sponsorship, thank you. Always remember that the more you participate, in the fellowship and camaraderie of Nomads, the more fun you will have. Darren Holm netted his first Matchbox with a great 20 points off a handicap of 8, perhaps the pressure of being the Junior Vice Captain has caught up with him! The worst Playing fourball was only a threeball (so they were given a Ghost score). Ian Taylor offered to help them take down and pack the Altar, I wonder if he was perhaps in need of an umbrella? It was a very busy afternoon for awards with Howard McLaren getting his 25year, Ian Bradley his 20-year, Grahame Boyle, Tulio Coelho and Richard Isaacs their 15-year and Bruce Richards his 5year tie. John van der Spuy received his 300 game badge. Well done to all of you. Thanks to Heinz Walter (currently still non-active) and Les Floyd (Easterns) for coming all that way out to join us for a few drinks at the prizegiving. Many thanks to Eugene Marx for an interesting fines session but remember we only need one Group fine even if it is R10.00 per person. BIRTHDAY & ANNIV WISHES Chris Leicher 60 Gavin Ditcheld 50 Russell Sourgeon 50 Migul Cardoso 40 Scott Wallace 30 GET WELL/CASUALTIES Ralph White was attacked and bitten by a dog and is recuperating slowly (Im not sure what happened to the dog!).

JUST ME We had a letter from Malcolm Fruin, in Canada, thanking us for his 40-year tie. He sends his regards and he is looking for an event at which he will wear his tie with pride. He would like to say hi to any of the older Nomads who might remember him. Congratulations to Malcolm and Joan on the occasion of their recent 55th wedding anniversary.

It seems like the Botswana Nationals is fully subscribed, however there are still two other Away Trips that you can go on. Firstly there is the Lowveld Quadrangular on the 1st weekend in October and then there is the Free State 15th Anniversary on the 1st weekend in November. The Entry Forms for both of these trips should be out quite soon.
