CANDIDATES: (top row)
Victoria Newton, Gordana
Blazevic, KimFlesser;
(second row) Bettina Currie,
Amanda Cooper, Carla Pinder,
Laurie Bell; (third row) Neil
Martin, NormWyndham,
Fiona King; (fourthrow) John
Harbison, Georgia Farrell;
(bottom) Blair Thompson.
BRACKENRIDGE
What will you do about
cheaper and regular pub-
lic transport?
Kei t h Skel t on ( The
Greens): Did not respond.
Amanda Cooper (LNP):
The cost of public transport
is set by the State Govern-
ments TransLink. However,
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk
has been a strong advocate
for the return of the daily
ticket. If elected the Quirk
administration will spend
$88 million on upgrading our
public transport facilities.
Carla Pinder (ALP): Im-
prove public transport, more
buses and improved routes
and deliver free public trans-
port for seniors.
DEAGON
What will you do about a
dog off-leash area on
Sandgate foreshore?
John Harbison (Indepen-
dent): I am totally opposed.
This is a blatant base pan-
dering to those dog owners
who are either irresponsible
or not fully aware of the
environmental impacts on
our wader birds.
Georgia Farrell (Greens):
I believe that we can intro-
duce an off-leash area for
dogs that dog owners, birds,
children and families will be
happy with.
Victoria Newton (ALP): I
firmly believe we can find
space for dogs to swim and
enjoy our local sand flats
without disturbing other
people and the local wildlife.
Gordana Blazevic (LNP):
I have recently commenced
surveying the local com-
munity about this and about
establishing a trial dog off-
leash area in a designated
section of the foreshore. Its
looking very positive.
MARCHANT
What will you do about
street parking causing
chaos in Chermside?
Fiona King (LNP): We
have put some parking re-
strictions in place and more
will be done. Ultimately the
solution is a parknride fa-
cility and I am working to
achieve that.
Blair Thompson (ALP):
We will immediately estab-
lish a Chermside District
Parking Taskforce to de-
velop practical solutions.
N e i l Ma r t i n ( T h e
Greens): I am calling on
council to refuse future
building proposals from
Westfield that do not include
adequate free parking for all
of their customers and staff
as well as the commuters.
MCDOWALL
What are the key issues
for your electorate?
Bettina Currie (ALP): I
decided to stand for council
as I felt that I no longer had
a voice and locals like me
werent being listened to. My
priority is the basic traffic
issues, park upgrades for fa-
cilities and safe access via
footpaths.
Norm Wyndham (LNP):
Address poor driver behav-
iour by continuing to liaise
with police. Lord Mayor
Graham Quirk has commit-
ted to introduce portable
flashing speed warning signs
in all wards to warn drivers
of their speed. These can be
positioned in school zones,
pedest ri an bl ackspot s,
dangerous intersections and
busy neighbourhood roads.
NORTHGATE WARD
What will you do about the
changing mix of industry
and residential at North-
gate?
Kim Flesser (ALP): I will
develop a new land-use plan
for the suburb. Its time to
get rid of the noxious and
air-polluting industries,
away from this residential
neighbourhood (especially
the Esco foundry). The area
around the railway station
should be converted into a
mix of residential and com-
mercial uses, retaining light
industry land to continue to
p r o v i d e e mp l o y me n t
opportunities.
Laurie Bell (LNP): Indus-
try is an important part of
Northgate ward, but we need
to be able to effectively man-
age its impact on the wider
community. Thats why the
Lord Mayor is in the process
of creating a Neighbourhood
Plan for Toombul and Nun-
dah, which will guide our
areas growth over the next
20 years. If elected, Ill make
sure we have a vibrant mix
of residential and commer-
cial space where needed, and
also manage community
concerns about any indus-
trial activity.
MAYORAL CANDIDATES
What are the key election
issues?
Rory Killen: Did not re-
spond.
Andrew Bartlett (The
Greens): More community
control and less developer
control. Reducing traffic
congestion and increasing
transport options. Making
Council more accessible and
user-friendly for the com-
munity. Stopping excessive
and inappropriate develop-
ment. Sound and trans-
parent financial manage-
ment.
Ray Smith (ALP): Ill take
action to get the priorities
right by bringing down
councils debt, relieving cost
of living pressures on resi-
dents and putting money
back into our local suburbs
with more funding for roads,
public transport, footpaths
and community services.
Chris Carson: My key
issue from day one has been
traffic change. That will be
my number one focus. I will
also be focussing on com-
munity safety and security,
with a strategy to reinvigor-
ate and reinvent Neighbour-
hood Watch.
GrahamQuirk (LNP): Ad-
dressing economic growth
through my development
plan and keeping the cost of
living down for residents.
Tackling traffic congestion,
making Brisbane Australias
most clean and green city
and also building a more
inclusive and accessible city.
