Its humble birthplace was merely a few feet of floor space in the back of the Gameroom. Consisting of only a counter top bar with a few cabinets, the wares of this new retail establishment amounted to a few shirts and a few miscellaneous items. Yet it was called, The Store.

ometime in the early 70s, the store morphed into a slightly larger operation commanding the whole back corner of the Gameroom. In 1983 as the camp continued to grow, so also grew the need for more space for The Store. Thus, a larger chunk of space was taken from the Gameroom to make room for the new and improved Kountry Store. As was the name, so was the dcorvery rustic, very country. The Store lived and thrived in this location for the next 27 years. These years witnessed continual fine-tuning as the need to offer more resources required a creative design for every inch of the hobbit-like floor space. The summertime rush hour became a distress signal. Since the traffic flow basically went one way, it was possible for rush hour traffic to swiftly move a camper all the way through the store and out the door without his being able to stop and shop for anything! In fact, the swift-moving riptide of people made it almost dangerous to stoop to browse through a book on the bottom shelf. As far as we know, no one was ever trampled or injured during rush hour. However, all of this brought us to the conclusion that we desperately needed a new home for The Store. In the summer of 2009, we began construction on a new building that would house a new store along with much needed office space. Through the generous giving of friends and with the help of many volunteers, the new building was completed in May of 2010, and The Store was given its proper new name: THEWILDS General Store. Offering six times the display space of

the Kountry Store, the beauty of the General Store is far beyond what we even imagined, resulting in a nickname from Ken Collier: Barnes and Noble Outback. Like the size of The Store, the mission of The Store started out small and was predominantly focused on camp shirts and souvenirs. However, as The Store expanded in size, so did the Staffs burden to help the campers know their God better by making good books and music available. In time, this burden became a thriving passion of the ministry. Offering shirts, hats, and jackets as well as essentials like deodorant and toothpaste has also been a great benefit to camp unity, especially the deodorant and toothpaste. The passion to provide resources is now being fulfilled like never before with an expanded offering of books, CDs, DVDs, Bibles, Bible study resources, and music books. Add in the new and improved lineup of THEWILDS paraphernalia, unfailingly friendly staff, and four invitingly plush chairs by the beautiful rock fireplace, and you have one cool place for campers to hang out in the middle of the summer heat and a warm, cozy, inviting place to enjoy in the cold winter. All of this without the former fear of being run over during the rush hour. Truly, we are overwhelmed by Gods goodness as we consider the vast improvement of The Store from its humble beginnings to its present usefulness. God has provided everything needed each step of the way. May God help us to be faithful in our passion to provide clear, practical resources that will help people be more like Him.

For a baby, change means going from discomfort to comfort. For a junior high boy, change is what happens to his voice as he tries to sing. For a teen girl, change is what happens to her mind fourteen times before she decides what to wear. For many moms, change is what lives in the bottom of her purse. For many dads, change is what happens to channels when he gets ahold of the TV remote.

For all those connected to THEWILDS of New England, change can be seen all over this campsite! The old Campbell Building has changed from bare studs, wireless walls, lonely hand-hewn beams, and empty fireplaces to an airconditioned Town Hall complete with a totally refurbished welcome lobby, a newly stocked bookstore, an efficient and beautiful office, and a sponsor lounge with AC, Wi-Fi, and of course, coffee. Our former welcome center/ office/bookstore/snack shop is now changed into a fully functional ice cream parlor complete with red-seated parlor stools, hand-dipped ice cream, Noreastahs (more than just a shake), and myriad other sweet treats in the beautiful, air-conditioned New England Sweet Shoppe. In addition, what was just an acre of woods is now changed into the Rocksa low-level ropes course complete with our own Freedom Trail, Plymouth Rock, Wild & Woozy, Incline Traverse, and Green Monster (a climbing wall every New Englander needs to conquer). But the biggest change is what happened in the hearts of hundreds of campers and staff this past summer.

As I look through decision slips from previous weeks of camp, I marvel at how the Spirit of God uses the Word of God to see lives changed for the glory of God! If you dont mind, may I let the campers personally tell you what God has been doing? Here is what some of them wrote on their own decision slips: I have finally come to terms with my Savior and Lord. I AM SAVED! Every time I gripe I need to remember a verse and stop griping. I need to spend more time with God and get to know Him better. I need to read and pray more so I can listen to what God is trying to tell me! I want to have a more honest and loving view of others, less complaining, longer temper, and I want to love God more. I will stop griping, complaining, and being ungrateful for everything God has given me. I need to forgive my dad. I want to be as close to God as I can be! I need to have a better relationship with my mom.

I need to love my little sister just like God loves me. I need to honor my mom more and not get mad or make faces when she leaves the room after she tells me to do something I dont like. I got saved tonight. For God, change is what He desires in our lives as we put off the old man and put on the new man as our minds are renewed in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. God wants us to change to Christlikeness. God tells us that if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17). As you can see, there has been a lot of change around this place, and we are so thankful. Do you mind if I ask you a personal question? What has changed in your walk with God this year? Have you seen evidence of the Spirit of God using the Word of God to make a change in you for the glory of God? If not, guess what would really please God? Youve got itchange.

THE WILDS Online Registration! Over the last two years we have listened to your requests, asked questions of software companies, brainstormed, and critiqued our own systems and processes. We forged a partnership with Dynamic Technology Solutions, Inc., located in Greenville, South Carolina, to build a custom registration system from the ground up, or by the 1s and 0s (or bits) in the technology world. With 21 different camp programs and 2 campsite locations, building a streamlined system was no small task but one we trust will prove to be worth the intense effort by you, our many friends, who will be the ones to enjoy the convenience of this new experience. Even, while youre reading this NewsLetter, we are extensively testing the system alongside our development team. The current project plan anticipates the site being live early next year. We are excited about implementing this new tool which will enhance each campers experience and accomplish one of our core values which is to serve families and local churches. THE WILDS Christian Association, Inc. is an independent, nondenominational, nonprofit, 501(c) (3) organization created for the purpose of operating Christian camps and conference centers. We are fundamental in our beliefs, Bible-centered in our philosophy, and evangelistic in our outreach. THE WILDS Christian Association, Inc. presently operates a Christian camp and conference center in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina that is open year-round. The camp has a carefully selected and trained staff and averages over 20,000 campers per year. In 2009 THE WILDS of New England began ministry at our campsite in Deering, New Hampshire. In this peaceful, rural setting we experienced good growth in attendance at our summer camps as well as in our limited fall schedule programs. We anticipate a continuing steady growth and expansion of the ministry at this New England location. or CampsAbroad, change doesnt come in the form of buildings or activitieswe dont own any propertyand our method of operation stays pretty much the same as well. And yet, the ministry is constantly shifting and changing. What is behind our constant state of flux? It comes down to one main factor: people. Our missionary co-workers hail from many different countries, speak many different languages, and move freely in a variety of cultures, but all of them are burdened to reach young people. I never cease to be amazed at how the Lord brings us together.

Some drop by THEWILDS for a visit; others contact us via the internet; some are referred by friends (at home and abroad). Many of these contacts start out as casual just getting acquainted meetings, but often those new touches develop into close partnerships focused on establishing a youth camp in their field of ministry. This past year, our CampsAbroad teams ministered with first-time contacts in five different countrieseach jam-packed with new challenges and new opportunities. India: the seat of Hinduism Poland: Catholic by tradition, increasingly secular in practice

Japan: steeped in centuries of ancestor worshipseemingly so cold to the gospel Haiti: pagan to the core, living in chaos Indonesia: the largest Muslim nation in the world What a diversity of nations! But they have at least one thing in common: young people who need the Word of God. The place of ministry may change dramatically, but the goals remain the same: seeing God transform the lives of young people through His Word! And that is one thing we dont ever want to see change.

Dear Camper,
I hope you were able to have a great summer that included a week of camp with us at THEWILDS! If you werent able to come, you surely missed out on some great fun and serious spiritual encouragement. For many of you who were able to come, I hope you enjoyed our newest activityPaintball. From the reports I have received, it looks like more than 1,800 of you played Paintball this summer, using up nearly 530,000 paintballs. I guess Paintball was a real hit! (Sorry, I know that was a bad joke.) Whether or not you came this summer, I want to encourage you with one verse. In Acts 20, Paul is exhorting some church leaders in Ephesus that he would most likely not see again. The Apostle gives them instructions and then tells them he is going to depart for Jerusalem. The only problem with Paul going to Jerusalem is that everybody keeps trying to tell him that he will be persecuted in Jerusalem and possibly be put to death. In Acts 20:24, Paul responds to their warnings by saying, But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. Wow! Dont you love that kind of commitment? Paul believed that going to Jerusalem was part of Gods plan for his life, so he was not going to allow persecution to stop him from obeying God. His focus was on finishing his course with joy. Let me ask you a questionwhat does it take to stop you from obeying God? In America, we very rarely face the kind of persecution Paul faced, but, unfortunately, we do allow other things to hinder us from obeying God. Are you willing to obey God in every area even if your friends make fun of you? Will you persevere for the Lord even if it causes you to be left out of the cool group? Are you able to set aside comforts in order to discipline yourself unto godliness? When was the last time you put down the video game controller, shut off the TV, or pushed away from the computer because you knew you needed to spend quality time in Gods Word? When was the last time you stood up to your friends when they said something or wanted to do something that was displeasing to God? Paul was focused on finishing the race! His eyes were on the goal of Christlikeness (Philippians3:14). This focus allowed him to endure suffering and shame so that Christ would be magnified (Philippians1:20). May it be said of each of us that we will not allow anything to move us from Gods calling on our lives to be more like Jesus Christ every day. Keep your eyes on the goal! Joyfully Serving Him,

Musings

hanges? I dont know about you, but with me it seems that physical and mental changes are taking place almost daily with a new ache or pain cropping up in a new spot. (Am I the only one?) How many times do we forget unless we write it down? Even then there is the inevitable question, Now where did I put that piece of paper?! In fact, we probably can relate to the man driving down the road, obviously lost, who told his wife that he was not too proud to stop and ask directions, but that he had just forgotten where they were going! However, change is reality as we age. (I like the word "mature" better.) We are commanded to redeem each season of life for Gods glory (Ephesians 5:16). Never in our fondest imagination did Diane and I think that God would allow us to still have a small part in serving at THEWILDS after 42 years of its existence. However, He has raised up a great group of dedicated younger leaders to take the ministry to another level of opportunity. These staff members have introduced many different changes,

some that we cringed at when first introduced, but that have proven to be very successful and exciting. Has THEWILDS changed in recent years? Yes, in its facilities (remember the unpaved roads, the medicine wagon, the old Kountry Store?), in its creativity, in its variety of programs, in its unique activities, and in its scope of outreach. For these and other improvements we are in awe of our gracious God. Our prayer and admonition to the present administration has been to keep up with the current advancements without biblical compromise. They continue to do so, and for this we greatly rejoice. The continued ministry benefit to over 450 churches that bring campers to THEWILDS during the summer months has been evident in changed lives, attitudes, godly future goals, spiritual habits, and many more areas. We believe it is essential that believers be constantly changing to be more and more conformed to the image of Gods dear Son. Thats the kind of change that is good for us all!

ohn Bott, THEWILDS Field Representative, is comfortable when he is in his home or office in Greenville, but he is really At HomeAt Camp. Camp is where John was introduced to this ministry, where he received foundational training in this ministry, where he met his wife, Tina, while they were both serving on summer staff, and where they eventually were married. Their connection to what God is doing in the lives of campers of all ages (especially teenagers) at and through the ministries of THEWILDS is primarily through our North Carolina campsite. In 1992 when John accepted the position as our Field Representative, he was told that he would need to move to South Carolina to work out of the corporate office in Taylors. From a job description standpoint, John believed that he could fulfill his duties with campers more effectively if he were stationed at the campsite. However, he recognized that at that time, due to better access to major highways, the availability of office space, and the opportunity for more effective communication with the registration staff, he should locate to the Taylors office. Now, the highway system near the campsite makes access much easier, and there is office space available at camp in the recently completed office building that God provided the resources to build through many of you. With the growth and effectiveness of electronic communication, John can easily

and precisely communicate with our registration staff and anyone else from wherever he is located. Therefore, the administrative staff and the Bott family all agree. It would now be most effective for the ministry for John to live at our North Carolina campsite. All he needs is a home! The house plan used for the recently completed staff home for the Meals

I TRUST that you will seriously pray for God to direct you to help THEWILDS with the cost of this very important project. The Bott family and the entire staff will sincerely appreciate it.

AT HoME At Camp
family is also being suggested for the Bott family. It is a simple 1,500 square foot, 3 bedroom, 2 bath home with a carport and a full, unfinished basement. Our need is the funding for the construction. Over the last year, as a result of a banquet in Greenville and some spontaneous donations, we have received approximately $45,000 toward the estimated total cost of $150,000. This fall we will be doing a target mailing requesting support for this project. Though we will miss seeing many of our friends at various fundraising banquets, we are hoping
