OTHER KIND OF PIPES 1. 2. 3. 4. CEMENT PIPES ASBESTOS CEMENT (AC) PIPES STEEL PIPES GRAY CAST IRON

1. CEMENT PIPES

Advantage: - cement pipes are non-corrosive in nature and extremely strong and durable. Disadvantage: -These pipes are bulky, heavy and require careful transportation and handling. The layout process of these pipes is costlier than steel pipes.

2. ASBESTOS CEMENT (AC) PIPES

Asbestos cement (AC) pressure pipe - is used primarily for potable water, as well as for sewer force mains and industrial effluent and process piping.

AC pipe was first introduced in North America in the late 1920s and became a common choice for potable water main construction from the 1940s to the 1970s. The use of AC pipe was largely discontinued in North America in the early 1980s but AC pipe is still a significant portion of the water distribution systems in many North American cities.

Advantage: -These pipes are light in weight and easy in transportation and layout. They have smooth internal surface and are not affected by corrosion (rust). -The pipes are extensively used for water supply systems. Holes can be drilled in these pipes. These pipes are not costlier. Disadvantage: -these pipes are less strong and durable.

3. STEEL PIPES

These pipes are extensively used for water supply. They are best suitable for long distance pipe lines of high pressure and provide satisfactory performance during service.

Advantage: -The most strong and durable of all water supply pipes. These pipes have excellent mechanical properties and are ideally suited for welding. -They can withstand high water pressure. -The pipes are made in length more than twice the length of CI pipes; which saves in transport, layout of pipe and joining cost. -There is minimum damage to the pipes in transportation. The pipes being light in weight are used for large diameter pipe lines.

Disadvantage: - Steel pipes are comparatively expensive.

4. GRAY CAST IRON

Grey Cast iron pipe - is a pipe which has had historic use as a pressure pipe for transmission of water, gas and sewage, and as a water drainage pipe during the 19th and 20th centuries. - It is well suited for pressure and can withstand external load because of their thickness. -The pipes are easy in manufacturing, layout and joining. These pipes are manufactured by vertical casting in sand molds, horizontal casting in sand molds and centrifugal casting (spun casting pipes). Advantages -Gray iron's high carbon content makes it easy to melt, weld, machine and cast using common metalworking processes. -Gray iron contains graphite flakes that provide a high level of stability and minimize shrinking during the casting process. -The metallurgy of gray iron also makes it resistant to corrosion. Gray iron's high conductivity makes it ideal for cookware. Disadvantages -Gray cast iron's extremely low tensile strength makes it a poor shock resistor relative to newer, less rigid iron alloy varieties. Blasting gray iron can weaken castings by causing residual stress. - Gray iron may be too brittle for some applications, including instances when a casting must be especially thin or flexible.
