1. Where should the head of MIS be located in the organisation chart? Explain it
with a suitable example.

2. Should systems be designed to fit the people in the organization or should the
people be required to adapt to the systems? What inferences can you draw from
your conclusion?

3. “Financial Information System is basically dependent on other information

systems for providing management information for planning and control”.
Explain this with reference to the integration of operating systems with
Accounting and Financial Information Systems.

4.a) Categorise the boundaries of management decisions and illustrate how the
amenability to programming changes from the simplest to the complex forms of
decision making.
b) In a simulation process for example, inter-arrival times for which the average
inter-arrival time is 1/T and the probability function is a negative exponential
one, explain how the randomly generated values between 0 and 1 are linked with
the inter arrival times.

5. Why is the term feasibility design often used to designate conceptual

design? Which term do you think is more appropriate? Why?

6. Explain : a) Data Flow Diagrm

b) Data Dictionary
c) Decision Tables

7. What is a form? Explain in detail how to develop forms for data collection and
information Dissemination?

8. What are the fundamental weaknesses in the firm, which affects the development
of MIS?

1. The president of one of the nation’s largest food manufacturers and packagers
recently declared, “Our information system gives us the edge we need over our
competitors”. Describe ways in which an information system could provide a
competitive edge for this company.

2. Of what concern would the formal organization structure be to an information

systems designer?

3. “Inventory Management System is a vital area of management that requires a

well designed information system.” Explain this with reference to the following
situations.
a) A company with a large distribution network monitoring inventory on the basis of
value of sales and also on the basis of value and movement activity.
b) A manufacturing company that has to initiate placing of purchase orders
automatically.

4. Explain the concept of WBS (Work Break Down Structure) and its relevance to
the planning Techniques used for the installation of the Integrated MIS Project.

5. Develop a possible detailed scenario between the system designer and a manager
of marketing at the stage of development of alternative concepts for marketing
management information systems.

6. What do you understand by top-down and bottom up design? Explain with

suitable example.

7. How does systems theory explain the need for system maintenance? And how can
user implementation satisfaction be an indication of improved organizational
effectiveness?

8. Explain the importance of communication between various people involved in

developing of MIS? Explain with a simple example how the communication gap
will affect the system performance.

1. Make a list of management reports that the MIS might provide to ensure control
throughout for
a) A manufacturing company.
b) A bank.

2. Defend the statement that “Management is synonymous with decision making”.

What part would MIS play in decision making?

3. “Computerisation of routine clerical work is an area that has shown a lot of

benefit”. Examine this statement in the light of computer applications in the
decision making and operational areas and their objectives.

4. With reference to each of the following systems, state (a) System objectives
(b) Source of inputs (c) Destination of outputs (d) Output generated and
(e) Decisions taken thereon.
(i) Billing output
(ii) Inventory Management (finished goods) output

5. Explain conceptual design for a system to process incoming orders for a

manufacturing firm?

6.a) What is a data flow diagram? Explain some of the symbols used while
constructing a DFD.
b) Why is a data base generally a feature of a MIS?

7. Why should a company prepare specifications for hardware-software acquisition?

Why not let the vendors identify problems and propose solution? How will this
gesture affect MIS maintenance?

8. “Without the systematic approach of system analysis and design development of

MIS can run into problem”. Discuss.
