Documentary Proposal Bantry Karate Club & Glengarrif Shotokan Karate Tournament Calum Grace Overview The Glengarrif

Shotokan Karate Tournament and Grading is due to be held this coming weekend in the Eckles Hotel just outside the town of Glengarrif. The tournament features a number of events including kata competitions and kumite (sparring). My intention is to follow the Bantry Karate Club through the events of the day, as well as give a slightly broader view of the club and its current members. The Tournament is takes up most of the day, so an early start and set-up will be top priority. This is followed by a grading, wherein members of the various clubs perform kata and the like before a ranking Shotokan judge in order to advance in belt colour. Secondary to this coverage, we shall be sitting in on, and recording footage of, part of a karate class at the Bantry Karate Club the following wednesday evening. We also be recording a number of short talking head segments with a number of the club members. This is to supplement the footage of the tournament and grading. As a whole, this documentary will be intended to serve a dual purpose, both as an advertisement for the Bantry Karate Club itself, and as a general awareness raiser concerning the proliferation of karate clubs and the training and skill of the participants. Personnel A three camera set-up would be ideal, so a third cameraman will be needed on site. This will not be needed for the wednesday evening. The manager of the karate club, Les Elliot, is firmly on board, and I have contacted Dave O'Riordan (the Shotokan judge who will be handling the grading), from whom I have received a favourable response. A number of the regular members will also be on hand to help out, and have given permission to be photographed. Permission for filming on the premises of the Eckles Hotel has yet to be arranged, but contact as been made. A meeting will be arranged with Les Elliot and a number of the higher-ranking members of the club to discuss specif ics this thursday afternoon. Budget Petrol for the trip to the Eckles Hotel and to Bantry will have to be taken into account, as well as the cost of the cameras and associated equipment, and the possible cost of taking on a third cameraman for the day of the tournament. Lighting, beyond a simple diffused light for the short interview segments, will not be required. The relevant locations have already been scouted, and the natural and artif icial lighting in situ has been deemed to be both sufficient and appropriate. Man-hours are going to be very important to take into account in terms of budget, with a full day of shooting on the weekend, and an evening/night shoot on the wednesday. Man-hours for the editing of the piece should also be included.
