SUCCESSFUL PEREGRINE FALCON NESTING SEASON Harrisburg- Pennsylvanias peregrine falcons had another successful nesting season in 2012, according to Dr. F. Arthur McMorris, Pennsylvania Game Commission peregrine falcon program coordinator. We confirmed 32 pairs of falcons nesting across the Commonwealth, and 22 of them bred successfully, raising 62 young falcons, Dr. McMorris said. Also, we banded 42 of the young falcons in an ongoing effort to assist the recovery of the population. These numbers compare well with those of last year, when 32 pairs raised 68 offspring. McMorris said that peregrines nested in 15 counties across Pennsylvania, with particular concentrations in the Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and Scranton/WilkesBarre areas. This years young falcons are now becoming independent of their parents, McMorris said. In fact, many have left their natal sites and begun wandering in search of suitable wintering areas and, ultimately, for sites where they may begin nesting themselves when they reach the age of two or three years. Peregrine falcons mate for life, but will readily accept a new mate if one of them perishes. They nest at the same site faithfully year after year; and in Pennsylvania, they leave their nesting territory only briefly, if at all, during the winter. Therefore, falcon enthusiasts and the general public can enjoy these magnificent birds year-round. The success of this years peregrine falcon nesting season is one more step in the recovery of the species from the brink of extinction, McMorris said. Peregrine falcons were extirpated from North America east of the Rocky Mountains by the use of DDT and related chemicals during the 1940s and 1950s. Subsequent to the banning of DDT in 1972, wildlife biologists in the eastern United States and Canada raised thousands of peregrines in captivity and released them into the wild; and as a result, the population is now recovering. In 1986, the first nesting pair of peregrine falcons in Pennsylvania in 25 years was found in the Philadelphia area. Since then, the number has gradually increased to this years total of 32 pairs. Peregrine falcons were removed from the federal Endangered Species list in 1999, but they remain on the Endangered Species list in Pennsylvania and most other eastern states. Further information about Pennsylvanias peregrine falcons is available from the Game Commissions website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), by clicking on Wildlife in the menu bar at the top of the homepage, and then looking in the Wild Birds and Birding section. GAME COMMISSION RECRUITING HUNTER EDUCATION INSTRUCTORS The Pennsylvania Game Commission is looking for experienced hunters and trappers who are interested in becoming volunteer instructors for the agencys basic HunterTrapper Education (HTE), Successful Bowhunting, Successful Furtaking and Successful Turkey Hunting courses, as well as future courses under consideration. Becoming a volunteer instructor for the Game Commission is one way experienced hunters and trappers can help pass along our outdoors heritage to a new generation, said Keith Snyder, Game Commission Hunter-Trapper Education Division chief. Becoming an instructor also is a fine way to help make a difference in your community and to do something to help improve the quality of our education and safety programs. If youre an experienced hunter or trapper, and want to give something back, I encourage you to become a certified instructor for one or all of the agencys education programs. Quality training is vitally important to ensuring these new, young hunters and trappers are both safe and responsible. Persons who wish to become instructors should be knowledgeable, experienced hunters and trappers, and be willing to teach at least one class per year. Classes are held at a variety of locations, such as sportsmens clubs, fire halls, schools and municipal buildings. Instructors work with other volunteer instructors, WCOs and Deputy WCOs to plan and teach classes. Applicants need not be experts in every field of hunting and trapping. All teaching materials and detailed lesson plans are provided by the Game Commission. All new instructors must have attended and completed a class, as a student, within the 18 months prior to or after submitting their application. Also, applicants must pass a background check, assist with at least one student-level class and attend a new instructor training workshop before being certified. For more information about becoming an instructor, visit the Game Commissions website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) and select Education, then choose Hunter Education and then click on Becoming an Instructor. Individuals also can request an application packet online or by calling the agencys HunterTrapper Education Division at 717-787-7015. fb

In the kitchen, Ive added cup hooks to the undersides of the cabinets and those handy, expandable shelves to give myself two surfaces instead of one. All of my dish and pantry storage is double-decker. Another kitchen space saver is to buy drinking glasses that stack; IKEA sells them very inexpensively! Drawer dividers organize utensils most efficiently. If you have a broom closet somewhere (even if it isnt in the kitchen), consider adding shelves to it to make pantry storage. I keep overflow canned goods and staples in a plastic bin in my basement. A similar concept works in the bedroom closet. Double shelf space with expandable shelves. If your shelves are very deep, look into installing sliding drawers that you can pull out to gain access to the stuff way in back. If folded clothes storage is more important to you than hanging storage, buy the fabric shelves available almost anywhere. They work great for sweaters and other things that take up a lot of room. Shoes can be stored on one of those hanging racks available for the back of the bedroom door. Alternately, shoes (or even off-season clothing) might fit in a chest at the foot of the bed. Under-bed storage is also ideal for those purposes. Removing non-seasonal clothes to a basement or storage locker can instantly give you 50% more space! -Glenda

EASY WAY TO MEAL PLANNING I tried for years to get organized about meal preparation, but nothing ever seemed to last. I knew that to save time and money (and my sanity) I needed to plan our meals, but never seemed to find time to do it. Then I realized that I am planning my meals, only at the last minute and one meal at a time. So I started writing down what I served every night (hot dogs with chips, stroganoff with noodles, lasagna and salad, etc.). After three weeks, I reviewed my list and came up with a meal plan. It took a little fine tuning (too many days of spaghetti), but I was amazed! -Kathey in Georgia
REMEMBER WHEN?
THE MCKEAN COUNTY RSVP (RETIRED AND SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM) The McKean County RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) hosted a picnic on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at the Mt. Jewett Sportsmans Club to honor and recognize the senior volunteers who give of their time and energy to area non-profit organizations. Approximately 100 volunteers enjoyed a meal together and were entertained by John Berne on the accordion. RSVP volunteers put their lifetime of experience to work as they help a variety of organizations in meeting their respective missions. Volunteer sites include senior centers, health related non-profit organizations, libraries, food pantries, schools, nursing homes, museums and tourism organizations, and meals on wheels programs, among many others. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of many of the organizations they serve and we are grateful for their service, said Marcia Avey, Director of the McKean County RSVP program. For more information, those interested can contact the McKean County RSVP office at 887-5683. RSVP is a part of Senior Corps, and is sponsored locally by the Office of Human Services, Inc./Area Agency on Aging. Nationally, RSVP is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the federal agency that supports service and volunteering programs to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement. f NEW RESOURCE TO PREVENT DATING ABUSE (NAPSA)-The good news for families of many young people is that a new, free iPhone app can connect them with resources and advice to help them deal with and possibly prevent dating abuse. Many parents are unaware of how prevalent the problem is. In fact, as many as 10 percent of U.S. high school students report having been hit, slapped or physically hurt on purpose by a boyfriend or girlfriend in the past year. In addition, one in four teens reports being victimized by a boyfriend or girlfriend through technology. However, a recent study in the Journal of Adolescent Health found that only 55 percent of parents talk to their 11-to-18-year-olds about dating abuse-in fact, they're less likely to talk about dating abuse than about any other risky behavior, although the consequences can be both severe and long lasting. Dating abuse can result in injury, death and mental health problems including suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, eating disorders and depression. To help, the new Love Is Not Abuse app collects top resources in the field so parents can find information from leading experts and organizations in one easy-to-access place. The app provides facts on dating abuse, helps people recognize abusive behaviors, directs them to immediate help if they suspect their child is in an abusive relationship and offers tips on how to talk to their teen about the issue. It even simulates abuse through phone calls, text messages and e-mails, so that parents can see and feel what the abuse is like. Videos on privacy invasion, deleting a partner's friends on social networks, and unauthorized access to a boyfriend's or girlfriend's social networks teach parents about the destructive behaviors common in digitally abusive relationships. "Our research shows that parents are dangerously out of touch with the high levels of dating _violence and abuse taking place in their children's lives," added Jane Randel, director of Liz _Claiborne Inc.'s Love Is Not Abuse campaign. "We aim to put dating abuse, in all its forms, on the radar for parents.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Samantha Weaver It was British novelist Norman Douglas who made the following sage observation: You can tell the ideals of a nation by its advertisements. If youre like the average American, you will eat approximately 22 pounds of tomatoes this year. And half of that amount will come in the form of ketchup and tomato sauce.

DONOHUE: Please tell me if a digital mammogram is a great deal better than a regular mammogram. If I need to pay part of the cost, I dont mind, if its worth it. I dont want to pay for something that is simply newer. -- S.P. ANSWER: With a conventional mammogram, the image of the breast is captured on film, like a photographic image. With a digital mammogram, the image is captured electronically on bits of computer code, like a digital camera does. The techniques for taking a digital mammogram are the same as those for a conventional one. Digital mammograms are easier to store, and digital images are available immediately but are more costly. A large study of almost 50,000 women concluded that the accuracy between digital and conventional mammograms is not significantly different. However, in women younger than 50 and in women with dense breasts, digital mammograms provide better pictures. Unless your doctor has directed you to get digital mammograms, you can rely on standard mammograms to serve you well. The booklet on breast cancer provides information on its detection and treatment. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1101W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada. with the recipients printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

we hope that the excitement will cause students to want to continue to shoot and expand their archery experience. Among those expanded opportunities are 3-D archery tournaments and, eventually, bowhunting, which are natural avenues for archers to hone and maintain their skills. Pedder noted that, in May, the Game Commission received recognition at the NASP Coordinators Conference for reaching the milestone of having 100 schools enrolled in NASP. The Game Commission also was recognized for achieving the greatest percentage increase in school enrollments over the past year from among 47 states and five Canadian provinces that offer NASP. We want to build on the success, and we are able to offer interested schools grants to help purchase the necessary equipment to get started, Pedder said. These grants are made available through organizations such Easton Sports Foundation, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and Safari Club International. School officials interested in learning more about the NASP grants, contact Samantha Pedder, at the Game Commission headquarters, at 717-787-4250, or sapedder@pa.gov . Earlier this year, on March 9, nearly 500 students from 23 schools competed at the NASP State Tournament held by the Pennsylvania Game Commission at the Penn State MultiSport Facility in University Park, Centre County. Following the state championships, in May, more than 70 Pennsylvania students participated in the NASPs national competition in Louisville, Kentucky, and two students placed in the top 10 in their respective divisions. Also, the national event was recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest archery tournament with 7,804 competitors from 38 states. The World NASP Tournament will occur on Oct. 4-6, at Disneys Wide World of Sports, and any NASP participating school in Pennsylvania is invited to send a team. In 2010, the Game Commission began coordinating Pennsylvanias NASP, which helps school districts in Pennsylvania meet physical education curriculum requirements of the state Department of Education, while at the same time introducing them to the world of competitive
archery. In 2011, about 350 students from nearly a dozen school districts participated in the state competition, which was volunteer-run at the time. Studies conducted by the national NASP organization demonstrate that NASP is a great introduction to the sport of archery, and that many students choose to pursue the sport outside of school. Started in Kentucky, in 2002, NASP has spread throughout the United States, and now is reaching around the world. At the end of the 2011-12 school year, nine million students had gone through NASP lessons in 9,000 schools throughout 47 states, Washington, D.C., Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Tournaments are held at the state, national and international levels. NASP is a joint venture that partners with state education and wildlife management agencies and archery equipment manufacturers and organizations to promote student education, physical education and participation in the lifelong sport of archery. The programs focus is to provide international-style archery training in physical education classes in grades four through 12. For more information on NASP, visit www.archeryintheschools.org. Also, Pennsylvania NASP can be found on Facebook by searching for Penn NASP. 4 WAYS TO CONSERVE FUEL AND STOP PAYING SO MUCH AT THE PUMP Fuel prices have traditionally been at their highest during the summer months. Thats unfortunate for vacationers and road trip enthusiasts who must budget the cost of fuel into their vacation expenses. Those costs can be considerable, especially if gas continues to hover around $4 per gallon as it has for much of 2012. But as costly as gas has become, drivers can still mitigate those costs by employing a few strategies aimed at increasing their driving efficiency. The following are a few ways drivers can offset high fuel costs regardless of the time of year. 1. Maintain a consistent speed. Though it might be hard to maintain a consistent speed when driving during rush hour, it should not be too difficult to do so when hitting the open road. If most of your driving is done on the highway, go easy on your engine by maintaining a consistent speed. The easier you are on the engine, the less taxed that engine will be and the less fuel it will need as a result.
If going on a long road trip or if your daily commute involves long stretches of highway driving, rely on your vehicles cruise control function to make things easier on your engine and conserve fuel. 2. Dont drive when you can walk or bike. It might sound simple, but the best way to conserve fuel is not to use it at all. During the warmer months, walk or ride your bicycle when performing local errands. This is especially beneficial during the summer, when gas prices are typically higher. Save a few gallons of gas by running errands on foot or on your bicycle. If a physical condition makes it hard for you to walk or bike, make use of public transportation when you need to travel locally. 3. Obey the speed limit. The open road entices many drivers to put the pedal to the metal, but driving over the speed limit is both illegal and expensive. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that drivers pay an additional $0.31 per gallon for every five miles they drive over 60 mph. Since gas prices have already hovered around $4 per gallon for much of the year, drivers would be wise to obey the
speed limit and conserve their fuel as well as their money. 4. Dont make your vehicle into a traveling closet. Many drivers keep excess materials in their cars, whether its a cooler for picnics, a set of golf clubs or an old baby stroller. Excess weight will rear its ugly head at the pump. The doe notes than an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle can reduce its miles per gallon by as much as two percent. Before hitting the highway, check your trunk and the backseat and remove any unnecessary items. Drivers spend a considerable amount of money at the gas pump each week. But a few simple strategies to conserve fuel can save money and help the planet at the same time.
Another school year has begun and the streets are once again full of kids biking, riding and walking to and from school. This is no time for drivers to be careless. Just one lapse in concentration--whether reaching for a cup of coffee or adjusting the volume knob on the stereo-is all it takes for a driver to miss seeing a child dart into the street or a bus driver raise the stop sign. Don't let it happen to you. Always drive with caution in areas with school children and follow these tips:
Watch out for children walking and biking to and from school.
Observe the speed limit, especially in school zone. Learn and obey the traffic rules of school zones. Understand and heed all school bus lights. Eliminate all distractions when driving in school zones. Know and follow the drop-off and pick-up procedures at school.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Paul G. Donohue, M.D. Broken Heart Not Just Figure of Speech DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Last December, my husband called the paramedics when I did not respond to him. They rushed me to the hospital when I began convulsing. I have no recollection of any of this. When I woke one week later, I was in the ICU. I was told that I had broken-heart syndrome. I also was told it has to do with blood pressure. Can you confirm that there is such a thing? -- A. ANSWER: Broken-heart syndrome is for real. Its a recent addition to the catalog of illnesses. Japanese doctors first described it, and called it Tako-tsubo cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy is a heart illness that affects the heart muscle, not the heart arteries or heart valves. The classical case is one where a person develops severe chest discomfort preceded by physical or emotional stress. The emotional stress could be the unexpected death of a loved one. An EKG shows a pattern that replicates the pattern of a heart attack. The hearts function is greatly compromised. It doesnt pump blood like it should, and that can lower blood pressure. Seizures are not included in the list of symptoms.
However, a drop in blood pressure also drops the flow of blood to the brain. That can trigger seizures. The explanation for this is a surge in the bodys stress chemicals that affect heart function. Damage to the heart muscle isnt permanent. The heart returns to good health in a matter of weeks. You didnt mention any prior stress. Do you recollect any? On the plus side, your heart arteries are in good shape, and you ought not to suffer a recurrence. The booklet on congestive heart failure does not address broken-heart syndrome specifically, but it does detail a more common condition, its treatment and its prognosis. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 103W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 328536475. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have weak kidneys due to type 1 diabetes. My doctor has me eating three fruits a day and four vegetables. He limited my meat to 6 ounces daily. Does this limitation of meat benefit my kidneys? -- E.L. ANSWER: Many times, when the kidneys arent working up
to par (weak kidneys), doctors put their patients on a reduced-protein diet. It slows the decline of kidney function. Thats why your doctor limited your meat (protein) intake. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Is distilled water bad for drinking? Can you chew too much gum? My husband chews about four pieces every day. -- P.M. ANSWER: Distilling water involves boiling water and condensing the water vapor by cooling it. Components dissolved in the water are left behind. You can drink distilled water. You will miss out on the minerals contained in most water and on fluoride added to city water, but you can get these elements in other ways. If you chew too much sugar-containing gum, you promote cavities. Too much sugarless gum can cause diarrhea. Four sticks are not too much. Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

The retailer is liquidating its 399 remaining outlets and letting go nearly 11,000 employees. Gone will be the era when no shopping-mall parking lot in America seemed complete without an adjoining Borders, offering up its capacious aisles to browse for books you had no idea you needed.

Nostalgia aside, the extinction of Borders is the very model of a freemarket economy at work. The store fell victim to the unyielding injunction of a truly creative economy: Adapt, or die. It failed to keep up with evolving technology and shifting consumer preferences, and so has been forced to make way for more adept competitors. This ruthlessly efficient reallocation of resources took place because Borders wasnt big or politically connected enough to get a bailout; because its employees didnt belong to a powerful union favored by the White House; and because it didnt sell something, like green energy, deemed worthy of taxpayer support. The upshot of the changes that buried the store, and were allowed to unspool without governmental interference, will be cheaper and more readily available books. Read about Borders circa 1995 and it is lauded as a chain that seems as attuned to the new world of technology as the refined old world of literary society. It had a state-of-the-art inventory system. It stocked its enormous stores with tens of thousands of titles. Borders thrived by providing choice and convenience, two of the pillars of the consumer economy. Then it didnt recognize quickly enough the new ways of delivering them. It had to rely on Amazon to sell its books online, a boost to the online retailer that would do so much to make the Borders model obsolete. It branched out into sales of CDs and DVDs, an initially profitable move that backfired when the music industry went digital. It missed out on e-books. Locked into leases at uneconomical locations, its voluminous real estate began to weigh it down. In the late 1990s, the romantic comedy Youve Got Mail was built around the heartlessness of a mega-bookstore moving into a New York neighborhood and killing off a small family bookshop. Now, its the turn of the mega-bookstores to be eaten, with delivery of a $9.99 e-book just a few clicks away. In a free economy, the top dog always has to run scared. Government exists in an entirely different plane, characterized by stasis and the lack of market or any other kind of discipline. USA Today reports that federal employees job security is so great that workers in many agencies are more likely to die of natural causes than get laid off or fired. Washington is locked in a debate over whether health-care programs designed in the 1960s can ever be reformed to account for new realities. If Borders were a government agency, its budget would have been fattened up during the past few years, and itd survive in perpetuity, whatever its merits.

JR. HUNTING SEASONS JUST AROUND THE CORNER In addition to the upcoming junior pheasant season, which will be held Oct. 6-13, the Pennsylvania Game Commission has established other special seasons for those 12 to 16 years of age, who can hunt either with or without a hunting license. Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director, noted that the junior rabbit season will run concurrently with the junior pheasant season, from Oct. 6-13. As pheasants and rabbits inhabit similar habitat and can both be pursued using bird or rabbit hunting dogs, running these two seasons together broadens the opportunity and excitement for younger hunters, Roe said. Experienced hunters with dogs are encouraged to pass along our states hunting heritage by serving as mentors for junior hunters. In fact, the Game Commission has published a new planning guide to assist individual hunters or conservation organizations that host guided hunts for eligible junior hunters.
To view a copy of the new manual, go to the Game Commission website (www.pgc.state.pa.us), click on Education in the menu bar at the top of the homepage, select Special Hunts in the Special Events and Programs, and then choose Youth/Junior Hunt Planning Guide in the Special Hunt Guides. Other junior-only seasons in which participating junioraged hunters are not required to first obtain a license are for squirrel (Oct. 6-12) and waterfowl (Sept. 15 and 22). While they are not required to purchase a license, participating youth must first pass a basic Hunter-Trapper Education course. Junior-only seasons in which participating youth must pass a basic Hunter-Trapper Education course and obtain the required licenses are: antlerless deer (Oct. 18-20) and spring gobbler day (April 20). Roe also noted junior license holders antler restrictions require that a legal buck must have one antler of more than three inches in length or one antler with at least two points. fb

DID YOU KNOW? Thousands of students will be heading back to school, where they will face the pressure of academics, making new friends and avoiding the vices of student life, such as drugs or alcohol. While certain drugs are on parents radars, new, very dangerous drugs are continually being created. One new and dangerous drug that has recently come to the forefront is bath salts. According to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, calls to poison centers pertaining to bath salts rose to 6,138 in 2011 from 304 in 2010. The drug is not used in the bath but gets its name from its salt-like appearance. It is an inexpensive, synthetic form of speed that is made from mixing different stimulant chemicals. According to authorities and healthcare workers, the drug makes users aggressive and agitated while creating hallucinations that inspire paranoid and violent behavior. Many people became aware of bath salts in the spring of 2012, when a Miami man who may have been under theinfluence of bath salts allegedly attacked a homeless man and bit off portions of his face. Other similar cases have been documented. THE FIVE MOST DEADLY CANCERS Cancer has surpassed heart disease as the foremost cause of death for people in North America. A cancer diagnosis can be life-altering. Although there are many successful treatments for cancer, there is no definitive cure. Plus, certain cancers continue to be more ominous than others. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are more than 100 types of cancer, characterized by their location in the body and abnormal cell growth in that area. Millions of dollars have been raised and spent on cancer research and finding new and innovative methods of treatment. Although the five-year survival rate for those with cancer in the United States has improved considerably over the last three decades, the National Cancer Institute still lists many cancers as the primary killers of many people. Here is the most recent classification of the five cancers that claim the most lives each year. 1. Lung cancer: Lung cancer is responsible for more deaths than any other cancer. Roughly 160,000 people succumb to lung and bronchialrelated cancers each year. Although it is the most deadly, it is also the most preventable, as many cases of lung cancer are the result of certain lifestyle choices. Quitting smoking is the single most effective way to reduce your risk of lung cancer. 2. Colorectal cancer: In 2008, 52,857 Americans died from colorectal cancer, says the CDC. Most cases of colorectal cancer begin with groupings of small, benign cells called polyps that over time become cancerous. Screening is necessary to check for cancer of the colon and rectum, but because they are embarrassed and uncomfortable, many people avoid preventive measures. 3. Breast cancer: The second most common cancer in women, breast cancer can affect both sexes. It is also the most deadly cancer among women, with roughly 35 percent of the cases in the United States resulting in fatality. 4. Pancreatic cancer: The pancreas aids in digestion and metabolism. This cancer is deadly because it is difficult to detect in its early stages, as it does not always produce symptoms and the cancer tends to progress rapidly. Pancreatic cancer claims around 40,000 lives each year. 5. Prostate cancer: Prostate cancer is exclusive to men and is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among them, according to the NCI. This type of cancer forms in the prostate, a gland that produces seminal fluid that carries sperm. It is estimated that 28,000 men will die from prostate cancer in 2012.

cases occur in areas of the body other than bone (occurring in soft tissues like muscle and fat). Unlike conventional chondrosarcomas, mesenchymal chondrosarcomas occur with greater frequency in youngadults. This form of cancer often spreads (metastasizes) to other areas of the body and can cause life-threatening complications. Mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is very rare, with oncologists sometimes only experiencing one case in their lifetimes. However, the fastspreading nature of the disease makes it one worth learning about so that prompt attention can be taken should symptoms like swelling or pain, either in a limb or another part of the body, present themselves.

MYERS NAMED GAME COMMISSION SOUTHCENTRAL REGION DIRECTOR Huntingdon- Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe today announced that Bradley Myers has been appointed as the new region director for the agencys Southcentral Regional Office in Huntingdon, Huntingdon County. Myers fills the vacancy created when Rob Criswell retired recently. As regional director, Myers will be responsible for all Game Commission information and education programs and law enforcement activities in the agencys 12-county Southcentral Region. He also will continue to oversee the habitat improvement projects and all other land management activities on more than 210,000 acres of State Game Lands in the region. Myers became a Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officer trainee in the 21st Class of the Ross Leffler School of Conservation. Upon graduation in 1992, he was assigned to serve as a Wildlife Conservation Officer (WCO) in the Northwest Region, serving in both Jefferson and Forest counties, until transferring to a Land Management Group Supervisor position for Jefferson and Clarion counties in 1996. In 2004, Myers became the Bureau of Wildlife Habitat Managements Federal/State Coordination Division chief in the agencys Harrisburg office. In 2006, Myers returned to his roots to serve as a WCO in Armstrong County. Having a passion for Land Management, Myers again became a Land Management Group Supervisor, in 2007, in Blair and Huntingdon counties, until being promoted to Southcentral Region Land Management Supervisor in 2010. Myers had a previous career in private industry working for both Rockwell International in DuBois, Clearfield County, and the U.S. Tobacco Company in Nashville, Tennessee, before joining the Game Commission. He grew up in a family with a very strong hunting camp tradition, which ultimately led him to the career change. A native of Kittanning, Armstrong County, Myers graduated from DuBois High School and DuBois-Jefferson County Vo-Tech. He and his wife, Suzanne, currently reside in Martinsburg, Blair County. They have three children: Jacqueline, Sarah and Wyatt. The agencys Southcentral Region is comprised of: Adams, Bedford, Blair, Cumberland, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, Perry, Snyder and York counties. The office is at 8627 William Penn Highway, Huntingdon, PA 16652. The phone number is 814-643-1831. f

Do you encourage? I sat in one of those comfy chairs in the mall; the kind they put there for Dads when theyre sent out of the clothing store for asking, What about this: for the hundredth time. And so I sat watching people go by. One family had a toddler who was just catching on to walking. She would take a few steps, her face lighting up with the biggest, prettiest smile youve ever seen, and then all of a sudden, she lost her balance and sat down. Her family encouraged her to get up and try again, which she did; her smile resplendent once more. After a few more steps, shed plop down, then stand up and give it another go. She spent just about as much time on the floor as she did walking. But with her familys encouragement, she kept trying. They knew that one day she would walk without falling. Today, someone around you is going to fall, make a mistake; blow it. Avoid criticizing them. Instead, encourage them, believing that one day they will get it right. A SPORTING VIEW By Mark Vasto You Cant Steal First Billy Sunday began preaching when he was 20 years old, but the congregation -- led by Cap Anson and the rest of the hardscrabble Chicago White Stockings of 1883 -- wasnt easily converted. Sunday had approached Anson, bragging that he was about the fastest fielder on earth. Anson decided to give the kid, a former track star from Ames, Iowa, a chance. Speed was integral for the early game of baseball. Home runs were rare. The leader for the team in the category was an outfielder named Kelly. He hit three all year. They called him King. Sunday got off to a disastrous start: He struck out in his first 14 at bats -- still a major-league record. It occurred to members of the White Stockings that it would be hard to utilize Sundays speed if he couldnt get on base. Hey, Sunday, the famously animated Anson was said to have yelled from the bench. You cant steal first base! Sunday eventually did turn out to be a pretty decent ballplayer (but he was a poor fielder). Even when he was struggling, Sunday stayed in the lineup because there was one place he could keep up: at the bar. The 1884 World Series ended in a tie, and Anson was said to have blamed rampant drinking as the reason for his teams lack of execution. Try as he might, he lamented, he could not get the team to come in early at night. Once the well-paid White Stockings hit State Street, they were in it until last call. That made it difficult for the players to find their stroke the next day. It was on one such night that Sunday found more than his stroke - he found God. Stepping out of a bar, he ran into a congregation of missionaries from Chicagos Pacific Garden Mission (which still stands on State Street to this day). Immediately struck by the singing of gospel hymns, Sunday listened and waved off requests from his friends to move on to the next bar. Turning to them, he announced that he had been saved. Boys, Im finished with this wild life. Im going into the service of God. Ive seen the light! Sunday quit the game immediately, turning down large sums of money in the process, in order to become an evangelist. All but forgotten today, Sunday was the Billy Graham of his day, and his fiery sermons against the perils of booze led to more than a million converts to Christianity and the passage of Prohibition. Sunday, like Anson, proved capable of turning a phrase, too. Whiskey and beer are all right in their place, but their place is in hell. Cheers! SCHOOL BUS SAFETY FOR KINDERGARTENERS A kindergarteners first day of school is a day to cherish. There are so many firsts to experience, from wearing a backpack for the first time to making new friends to riding on a school bus. All of these firsts can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. For many youngsters, school marks the first time they are away from their parents for an extended period of time. As a result, safety concerns -- especially concerning transportation to and from school -- is foremost on the minds of many parents. School bus safety is something that should be presented to children in terms they can understand. Riding on a school bus is often a fun experience for kids, but the prospect of leaving Mom or Dad behind at the curb can spark mixed feelings. It is best to prepare students for the school bus a few weeks prior to the first day of school to gauge their reactions and plan accordingly. Many school districts and transportation companies, like the North Penn School District Transportation Department in Pennsylvania, host annual events that help introduce kindergarteners-to-be to the school bus. Children are encouraged to enter the bus and learn about all of the equipment. The students also may be given a short ride around town, and safety information is typically included. If the school district where you are living does not host a special orientation day for children entering kindergarten, see if you can arrange to have a bus tour by contacting a bus company in the area. Although safety tips may be covered at orientation, it is a good idea to reinforce lessons at home in preparation for the first day of school. Here are some important topics to go over. * Walk to the bus using a sidewalk if there is one. If no sidewalk is present, walk on the opposite side of the street facing oncoming traffic. * Wait for the bus at the designated stop. Dont wander away. * Do not go into the street while waiting for the bus to arrive. * Do not roughhouse or run around with friends while waiting for the bus to arrive. * Wait for the bus a safe distance away from the street until the bus stops and opens the door. * Walk one-by-one onto the bus. Do not push or crowd the doorway. * Once on the bus, quickly find a seat and sit down. * If there is a seatbelt, fasten it. (Children should be familiar with how to latch a seatbelt.) * Do not put your head, arms or anything else out of the bus window. * Keep the bus aisle clear of backpacks or other items. * Keep voices down so not to distract the driver. * Listen to the driver. * Do not throw things on the bus. * Unbuckle your seatbelt only when the bus has stopped at the school (or your stop at home)and the door is open. * Exit the bus slowly and do not push. * If you must cross the street when exiting the bus, do so in front of the bus so the driver can see you. Parents can go over these rules again and again. On the first day of school, some parents prefer to let their children ride the bus to school and then the parents meet the children at the school to watch the boys and girls exit. This also reassures the children that they are safe riding the bus. The first day of school may be full of new things, but children can acquaint themselves with school bus safety and grow accustomed to riding one each day.
AFTER-CARE OPTIONS FOR DUAL-INCOME FAMILIES In a perfect world, school and work hours would run concurrently. But the average school day begins at 9:00 a.m. and continues until 3:00 p.m., while the average work day lasts from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. As a result, parents must arrange for child care during those hours when school is out, but Mom and Dad are still at work. The two-income family is more common than ever before. Up until the 20th century, a dual-income family was rare. Today, however, roughly 80 percent of families in North America have both parents working, and many find it is impossible to live on one income. Dual-income families often have to make difficult choices about child care. If a mother returned to work shortly after giving birth, day care was probably arranged early on. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2010, 48 percent of children ages 0 to 4 with employed mothers were primarily cared for by a relative. Twenty-four percent spent the majority of their time in a center-based arrangement. As children grow and attend elementary school, traditional day care is usually not an option and parents have to make other arrangements. School-based care- Many schools offer programs both before and after school, many of which are reasonably priced. This helps dualincome families, but may not be practical during early-release days, during teacher planning days or holiday breaks. Programs that help parents before school typically allow working parents to drop off their children before the parents head to work. The students are kept in the schools gym or cafeteria until the regular school day begins. The same scenario applies to after school programs. At dismissal, after-care students will return to the designated location to work on homework or engage in some activities with other after-care participants until their parents arrive to take them home. Family and friends- Parents who prefer a different situation than school-based care frequently turn to friends or family members to bridge the gap between school and work. Students who carpool may be dropped off early at the drivers home and stay there after school until their parents get home. In addition, many families have welcomed older relatives back into their homes in light of the struggling economy. In such instances, grandparents or aunts and uncles can look after the kids once school has ended for the day. After-school programs- Some children are enrolled in care centers that watch children before school, bus them to school and then return in the afternoon to pick up the children again. This is one of the more costly options in child care. However, it may be more educationally structured than the care programs provided at school. Students who participate in sports or academic clubs may have an arrangement to stay with a teacher, coach or club administrator until their parents are home from work. These programs vary depending on the region of the country and the particular school district. Personal finances also play a role in the type of care families can afford. When the decision is made, there are some questions parents should ask before enrollment. * What is the ratio of caregivers to students? * What is the cost of the program? * How are delayed opening days and early dismissal days handled? Holidays and breaks? * What happens if I arrive late? * What activities will take place? * Is there ample time for homework? * Are caregivers teachers or volunteers? * Are background checks conducted? * Is financial assistance available? * What is the turn-over rate of staff? * Is there a nurse available? * Who oversees the program? * Is busing available? * How are emergencies handled? * How is poor behavior handled? * May I visit the program for a check-in? * With whom do Ispeak if I have a problem? * If my child is absent, do Ireceive a refund for that day? * How long is the waiting list? These are just some of the questions to ask, and parents are encouraged to come up with their own to find the best program for their children.
