Early catch for a big finish at Bass N Bucks Rayburn Summer Series season finale
By Patty Lenderman / Lakecaster
Tournament winners, Anglers of the Year determined and plans for 2013 announced as Bass N Bucks wrapped up their Sam Rayburn Summer Series August 4, 2012. Winners Walter Land and Dean Brown caught em in a hurry and weighed in before noon with nearly 21 pounds. The morning started out with a nice cloud cover for the competitors in the Bass N Bucks season finale. As the day progressed, the temperature gauge continued to rise to scorching temps and bright sunshine. Top teams reported a good early bite in deep water spots.
Taking a risk by weighing in early, Walter Land and Dean Browns 20.91 lb sack held for a 1st place win

Walter Land and Dean Brown made a short day of it catching their fish early and bringing their creel to be tallied before noon. We had picked out one spot to go to. It was a main lake point, 18 feet dropping to 25 feet. Rigged with DD22 crank baits and Texas rigged Zoom Ole Monster worms, they hit their target spot. The first 35 or 40 minutes, we didnt catch anything. That was really worrying us because we had no plan B. Only one plan, one spot and one pattern. If this didnt work we were pretty much toast. Dean broke the ice catching their kicker weighing 6.29 lbs. After that, we put a limit With 19.91 lbs Jason Wells and Vic Cooper not only won 2nd place in the season finale, but stayed ahead of the pack in points to win Anglers of the Year for the 2nd year in a row!
together pretty quick. By 9:30am they had a limit and culled three times, accounting for all of their weigh fish. We tried three other spots on our way back (to the weigh in) trying to cull one more small fish. Never did catch one to cull it with. Knowing they had a good sack already and not wanting the fish to become over stressed in the livewells, they made the decision to go ahead and weigh in. Their

total tally went to 20.91 lbs to win 1st place overall. In addition, their kicker held for Big Bass honors. Jason Wells and Vic Cooper caught a 2nd place check weighing in 19.91 lbs. They too targeted main lake ledges and drop offs in 9-12 depths. We started catching fish right away, Jason explained. In a fairly short time, using Bomber Fat Free Shad crankbaits on Dobyns Rods and Lews Reels, they had a limit in the boat with plenty of time left in the day to cull with bigger catches. We hit about 10 different spots and was able to cull up a few times. All total we probably caught 10 keepers all day. The team would like to thank Champion, Mercury, Shelby Savings Bank, Town & Country Marine and AFI Unlimited for their products and support. 16.83 lbs won 3rd place overall, brought in by Albert Collins and Gary Martin. We had a good day! We caught most of our fish early, but caught one here and one there all day long. They targeted two different depth ranges and caught most of their fish on two different baits. One targeted depth range went from 9 to 12. Using an E2 Baits 10 Big Tail Worm, they had a limit in 45 minutes. We also caught several on a 6th Sense 300DD crank bait in their Candy Citrus Shad color pattern. Albert explained that line choice made a big difference. He spooled with 10# test line. We hit a lot of different spots, but mostly ended up bouncing back and forth with the three best ones. We ended up culling about eight times. Their kicker weighed about four pounds, anchoring their 3rd place win. Now that all three Rayburn Summer Series events are in the books, the Anglers of the Year have been determined. Congratulations to Jason Wells and Vic Cooper for achieving this status for the second year in a row! As part of the reward for
achieving Anglers of the Year, their entry fees will be waived for the Rayburn Summer Series 2013 tournaments. There will be five Region Championships for Bass N Bucks qualifiers. Bass N Bucks and Bud Light Trail have partnered in 2012 to offer FOUR combined championships, plus one more exclusively for Bass N Bucks anglers. Three of the combined championships will fish for $10,000, and one will be for a Legend Alpha 191 w/200hp Mercury. The Toledo Bend Bass N Bucks championship (for both Rayburn and Toledo Bend Series qualifiers) will also be fishing for a Legend Alpha 191 w/ 200 hp mercury!
Region championship schedule: September 9 Lake Tawakoni September15-16 Sam Rayburn September 30 Lake Amistad October 20-21 Toledo Bend October 28 Ray Roberts
Teams that finish in the top 50% in any of the five region championships or enter at least two Region Championships will qualify to fish in the BLT/BnB Grand Championship where the 1st place team will receive TWO Legend Alpha 191 Boats w/ 200 hp Mercury Motors ($90,000 value). The Grand Championship will take place on Lake Texoma November 10-11. For a full listing of Championship qualifiers, click to www.BassNBucks.com. We would like to thank everyone who fished with us this year, announced Tournament Director Bryan Davis. Being the first year
Dean Browns first catch of the day anchored a 1st place win for he and partner Walter Land and was the biggest bass weighed in of the day at 6.29 lbs that Bass N Bucks and Bud Light Trail has worked in conjunction we have met a lot of great anglers and learned a lot from you. We are excited to announce that in 2013 we will be offering an expanded tournament trail with even more chances to win. The full 2013 schedule will be posted on our website soon. In the mean time, congratulations and good luck to all of the championship qualifiers!

An 11-year-old Jasper native has spent his year fishing in the Ignition Bass YFL six tournament series and is now headed to the championship on Sept. 8 on Lake Sam Rayburn. Hunter Martindale is the son of Craig and Stephanie Martindale and is also an A honor roll student in Jasper and will be a sixth grader at Rowe Intermediate this year. Stephanie Martindale said, Hunter fished six tournaments this season finishing strong in each one at [various] Texas lakes including Livingston, Fayette County, Conroe and Rayburn. Hunter came in first place at the last tournament of the season held at Rayburn, with the highest combined weight and catching the Big Bass of his division that weighed in at 3.34 pounds. Hunter is now a qualifier for the IB/YFL Championship that will be held on September 8th at Lake Rayburn where youth anglers will compete for more than $8400 in cash scholarships and prizes she said. Martindale says that her son is even already ahead of the game and has gotten sponsors just like the angling professionals. Hell be navigating his championship tourney with a new chip from Navionics (the leader in Marine Cartography used by many pros) sent to him for promotion, said Martindale. She continued, Hunter not only has a knack and passion for fishing, but also follows the careers of many professional anglers. His favorite pro is Jaspers own Todd Faircloth, who he is rooting for to be this years B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year. Hunter plans to follow in his footsteps and be Jaspers next pro angler.

Jeane and Gleason go deep for Win at Bass N Bucks Toledo Summer Series Finale
By Jodie Warner (Staff writer)
The temperature was up and so was the pressure on the 17 boaters fishing the Bass N Bucks Toledo Summer Series Finale, but the team of Darold Gleason and Kevin Jeane came out on top with a five fish limit weighing in at 19.63 lbs. Coming in a close second was Scooter Clark and Ryan Pinkston with a 19.33 lbs five fish limit and Martin Elshout and Mark Price rounded out the top three with 18.55 lbs. Fishing veteran Harold Allen took home the Big Bass award for the day with a 6.95 lb big fish.

Gleason said, We were fishing deep ledges, 15-25 feet throwing deep diving crankbaits. We caught a few on V&M soft plastics and a few on Stanley jigs As far as the day, he says it was a pretty slow start, it was kind of slow in the morning we caught two of our better ones in the morning, about four and a half pounds, and we had those two and two little ones at 11 a.m. We got on one good school of fish with a crankbait and we could catch 20-30 at a time for about 20 minutes and they would stop. We would leave and come back and catch em again, we did that about three times on that little school of fish and I finally caught our biggest one. It was probably about the last cull we made, it was a five-pounder at probably about 2 o clock. Gleason and Jeane took
Gleason and Jeane went deep for the Bass N Bucks Toledo Bend Summer Series and came out on top with 19.63 lbs home $2,400 for their day on the water. Second place winners Scooter Clark and partner Ryan Pinkston caught a total of 19.33 lbs and said that they fished mid-lake points with worms and crankbaitsreally not all that deep, about 12-18 feet of water. It started slow, we only had two at 10 a.m. and then we just hit two good spots. In one place we caught four and we culled one, and in another spot we caught and culled three more. Clark
Pinkston and Clark came in second with a five fish limit of 19.33 lbs and also clenched in the win for Anglers of the Year

said that they caught their biggest fish of the day at around 1 p.m. Clark and Pinkston received a check for $1,236 for their limit. Third place went to Martin Elshout and Mark Price, and although they were just out of check range, they still walked away with over $300 in sponsor prizes including a TFO rod (by Gary Lummis,) $100 worth of Rat-L-Traps and a $100 gift certificate to V&M Cyclone Baits. The duo said, We were fishing mid-lake. We caught them deep, about 20 feet, on a Carolina rig and a crankbait. Elshout said that the heat and sun werent really too bad where they were fishing and that they even were surprised with a little bit of rain in the morning hours. He said, We caught a lot of fish, and had a limit in the first 30 minutes. We probably caught about 50, but just no big ones. Four pounds is about the biggest we caught. Harold Allen took home the prize for Big Bass with a 6.95 lb big fish, but fell short of being able to get a five fish limit landing him with only 12.34 total pounds. Allen said he caught the big fish on an 11 inch red worm, fishing deep, 18 next to 25 [feet,] [at] the end of a long ridge. [We were fishing] in just one of those places where if you catch one out there, its a good one. [Its the] first time weve been there all summer. We had a tough day. We were struggling all day long, just couldnt get in the groove. This was the final event for the Toledo Summer Series, and after the weigh-in Scooter Clark and Ryan

Pinkston were named the Anglers of the Year with Gleason and Jeane coming in second in the points. The Bass N Bucks Championship for Toledo Bend will be on October 20-21 at Cypress Bend. Tournament Director Bryan Davis said about the Toledo Bend Summer Series, This is our first year doing it. Weve been mildly successful with the first year, and werent expecting a whole lot out of it. [We] averaged about 26 teams which is not bad for a first year division. Hopefully next year we should get it up around 40 or 50 or so. We had pretty good payouts today. It was a low number that we had, I think the guys were happy with everything that went on. I just wish we had some more anglers. As for what is coming up, Davis said, Spring series for Rayburn for Bass N Bucks starts up on December 1. Itll be January for the Toledo Bend Series. For the Toledo Series, well be going out of Cypress Bend and a little bit out of Big Bass Marina next year, then well do the Summer Series again and thatll be out of Big Bass Marina.
Davis also said that, Championship for Toledo Bend will be on October 20-21, were giving away a Legend Alpha-191, valued at $45,000. Itll be a two day tournament and then on Rayburn were giving away the same thing but itll be September 18-19. He would also like to remind anglers that he also puts on another tournament series, the Bud Light Trail and says, The Bud Light Fall Series starts up on Rayburn on August 18 and its going to have two championships for it, one will be on Lake Falcon and one will be on Ray Roberts during the Dallas Boat Show where well be doing a live remote weigh-in there too. Also, Davis added another note saying that Bass N Bucks will be expanding to Lake Fork with another five tour division making the Bass N Bucks Spring Series a 15 tournament series. The Summer Series will be a nine tournament series overall, all will still have the same five fish limit for weigh-in. For more information and results check out www.bassnbucks.com.

Most all of us have experienced the utter frustration of tossing everything we have in the tacklebox at finicky bass. Books written by good fishermen tell us what we should do, but unfortunately bass dont read these books. Here are ten potential solutions to many of these frustrations so give them a try.
(1) When schooling bass wont hit a thing I have two approaches to the problem. The first is a clever little bait made by Crme Lures called the Mad Dad Minnow. Its a 2.5-inch soft plastic crankbait that has a built-in weight and a wild vibrating action when retrieved. It has a small profile, you can cast it way out there and it can be fished at any depth. I have caught schoolies on this when they wouldnt even touch another bait. (2) Another technique is to rig a small spoon or tube-jig a couple of feet under a weighted popping cork. Yes the type that you use in saltwater fishing. An open-bail reel on a long rod works best for this since the key is to spot the schoolies (which always seem to be just out of your casting range), make a long cast past the school with the weighted cork, and then slowly pop the bait back through the school.
open. Fish the bait in the weeds, grass, and most other places that you wouldnt dare fish those expensive baits you are afraid of losing. The bait is very weedless, comes in a variety of colors and has been attracting bass for many, many years. (4) Get Grubby! One of the weapons used silently by many pros is a plastic grub body placed on a lead-head jig. The bait can be cast or jigged vertically, and can put bass in the boat fast. The weight of the jig-head will depend on the depth that you are fishing but I like the , 3/8 and -oz. models. I recommend the watermelon green, smoke, white, motor oil or red colors and a 3 or 4-inch lure body. You must be a line watcher because about 90 % of your strikes will be on the fall and you need to set the hook fast. (5) Most anglers in the Texas/Louisiana area fish the Carolinarig and for good reason it will catch fish in a variety of conditions. But in the last few years I have found that it also has a deadly application and that is doodle socking. This is an older term associated with the technique of jigging a bait vertically up and down on deeper water ledges, humps, etc. When using a Carolina-rig, the key is to allow the sinker to fall to the bottom and then raise the rod tip up just a bit more than the length of the leader you are using to keep the bait dancing enticingly right above the bottom. Best techniques seem to be using either a slight jiggle of the bait or raising the bait higher and let it slowly fall.
Flutter Spoon
(6) If you are not using one of the products such as Dip-N-Glo on the tail of your soft plastic worms, etc. you are probably missing out on some fish. Dipping the bait not only penetrates the bait for a permanent color change but also adds a scent change such as garlic, gamefish or even crawfish. Dont overdo it just add a bit to the tail of the bait. (7) Tired of using all of those big jigs etc. when punching the grass? How about using a heavy weedless jig-head but replace the body with a centipede or fluke. The action is much different and at times can be just what is needed to trigger a strike.
Beetle Spin
(3) When you see a Beetle Spin you usually think about crappie. This bait can also be super deadly for bass. Use the -oz model; add a different blade if you desire, but then take some pliers and crimp down the wire so the harness wont
(8) Flutter spoons (usually about 5-inches in length) have been around for a while but are not used by many anglers. Its a simple process and works great when bass are suspended and feeding on shad. Simply cast the spoon out and as it falls feather it down with a slight tension on the line. Strikes will usually be a solid thump and the large spoon can attract bass of all sizes. If a strike does not occur when the bait is falling use a sharp pop of the rod tip and make the bait jump off the bottom a foot or more as you work it back to the boat. If the bait gets hung up on a tree bass just get directly over the bait and gently jiggle it and it will usually work itself free. (9) Dead Sticking is a technique that can be effectively used with many types of baits. The key to this is patience. If using say a fluke, make the cast and allow the bait to sink to the bottom, pop the rod up to make the bait jump off the bottom, and then dont move the bait for 15-seconds or more. Same technique for a top water bait. Make the cast, allow the ripples to go away, pop the bait gently and then wait 15-seconds or more before you move the bait again. That 15-seconds doesnt sound long until you are fishing, but this technique can be deadly. (10) My final suggestion is one that you deeper water fishermen will love. The next time you see lots of fish on your electronics that are holding at a certain depth (say 25), rig your favorite 5-inch swimbait on a weedless -1/2-oz. jig head and use this technique. Cast the bait out and count it down to the depth you want to fish. Now use the trolling motor and stroll the bait through the fish and hold onto your rod because it can sure attract big bass (and stripers). Strolling will allow the bait to stay in the strike zone in a horizontal plane, whereas when you are casting the bait it only stays in this zone a brief period of time before it starts coming up as you retrieve it back to the boat. Change the depth of the bait count-down as you see the fish change depths on your graph. Well there you are a few of my suggestions for things to try when the going gets really tough. I predict that some of these will soon become your favorite and most productive ways to wet a hook. Good Fishing -- JB

Land management is on the mind of many people these days, and many of those would like to do more if they had the resources. As I think of this predicament all that comes to mind is a poem by Robert Fulghum entitled all I needed to know I learned in kindergarten which is mainly a list of rules that everyone learns (or should) during kindergarten. This may sound like it is coming from way out in left field (and maybe it is), but the line share everything fits very well. There are cost share programs available to landowners from several different organizations that can let the limited resources go even farther. To begin let me explain what is meant by a cost share program. This is a program designed to increase the conservation work accomplished on the landscape and to make this happen a given agency is willing to pay for part of the cost for management. The amount of cost share varies based on the type of project and scope of work. Most pay for at least 50% (some may pay as much as 75%) of the project cost. The landowner will front the money and then will turn in receipts for work done to get reimbursed. The landowner can pay for their share in 2 ways actual money or work-in-kind. Work-in-kind is the landowner actually doing some of the work to pay for their share. For instance, the landowner puts in firebreaks with their equipment for a hired contractor to use when prescribed fire is applied to the land. Landowner Incentive Program (LIP) is a program offered by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department that seeks to increase management for rare species and habitat types. These are native
habitat types such as native prairies, longleaf pine uplands, and native bogs to name a few. There is no minimum acreage, but some projects may require more acreage than others to accomplish the scope of work. An application outlining the scope of the project will be prepared by a biologist and then submitted for approval. The application will be evaluated based on the biological soundness by a committee of 11 people from TPWD and other conservation agencies. To get involved contact your local TPWD biologist or check out the TPWD website at www.tpwd.state.tx.us . The National Wild Turkey Federation is offering a cost share this year. It is directed at adding prescribed fire back into the environment. This program offers a cost share to landowners interested in prescribed burning their land to promote nesting and brood habitat for the Eastern wild turkey. For participation or further information contact your local TPWD biologist or Scotty Parsons (sparsons@nwtf.net) with NWTF. The Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), which is part of the US Department of Agriculture, offers several programs. Probably the most common for this area is the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). This program is designed more towards agriculture but can be used to manage wildlife as well. For instance this program can cover things such as interior fencing, herbicide applications, and grass plantings. To become involved in this program, contact your local US Department of Agriculture office or www.nrcs.usda.gov .
Money can also be obtained through the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFW) private stewardship programs. These programs are aimed at improving habitat management on the landscape. Often there is a minimum acreage to go with these programs. These programs work by the landowner getting in touch with the USFW biologist. The local biologist can be found by using the USFW website www.fws.gov . The last program is not a cost share program, but can save money for the landowner. This is switching an agricultural or timber tax valuation into a wildlife tax valuation. Wildlife tax valuation does not save additional money from other valuations, but allows the landowner to conduct wildlife management instead of agriculture or timber practices to maintain the lesser tax valuation. The landowner (that already has an agriculture or timber tax valuation) need only obtain and fill out the wildlife management plan from the tax office. To obtain some help in conducting wildlife management doesnt take too much effort. There are many sources of financial help available to landowners that cover many aspects of management. Dont wait if you are interested in any of these programs as funding cycles start and stop at different times of the year and some programs stop when they run out of money. For more information or participation contact your local wildlife office. Life is more fun outdoors and lets work together to keep it that way.

I will never forget one of my very first biology classes long ago when my professor made me realize that just because you go to college does not equate to a career. My professor walked in and looked around, which made me want to look around, and Ill never forget what he said next on that August day 24 years ago: Only a handful of you will be around working as biologists in 10 years. In 20 years maybe only one or two of you will still be in the field. There are three groups of you as there is in all classes and they consist of 1) The preservationists - you are the ones that are the romantics and believe things should be looked at from afar and adored. You do not feel like you are worthy to touch nature and nor should anyone else. You will fail. 2) The majority of you will realize that there is more lucrative things you can do with a biology degree and you will go on to other endeavors in time as you learn the pay is low, the hours long, and working conditions are bad. I wish you good travels. 3) The conservationists - you are the ones that have the best chance. You are not afraid to live with nature and you do not mind others doing the same. You have the best chance. Some of you will stick. Ok, I was one of the ones that made it and looking back there was a lot of truth in what that man told us that day. Most of my classmates have gone on to other things. Some floundered around for awhile and never found their niche. Its been bumpy along the
way to say the least but I think I have learned a thing or two by what my professor meant about conservation and accepting that others will share the land and water with you. The main thing Ive learned is that even though Im called a natural resource manager, I dont really manage natural resources at all I deal with people all kinds of people. Most are just ordinary people wanting the ordinary things like a plot of area to live and raise a family, clean water, a good fishing hole for those rare days they have off from work, ability to make a living to provide for themselves, etc. However some people are the Litter Bug Family and Im not sure if Im wearing my biologist hat or my Dan hat, but I know I have a problem with the Litter Bug Family, and the Game Wardens do as well. I want to be clear. I encourage everyone to spend time outdoors and enjoy themselves. But, when I see the complete disrespect that some have for nature and all the other folks trying to benefit from it, I will speak up and do everything in my power to ensure this is kept to a minimum. As you can see from the pictures, the scattered trash was a result of a family outing or two at Hidden Beach at Sam Rayburn. They packed in drinks and chips, and they made sandwiches (as evidenced by the copious amounts of cheese wrappers). There were young children there (as evidenced by the discarded plastic float
and swim goggle packaging) as well as a baby (as evidenced by the numerous diapers). What types of people can pack all this stuff down to the beach, but lack the decency to tote their trash out? What an absolute disgrace! I would have written these people a ticket and personally gone to court with them to request that their sentence require trash pick-up. I hope they enjoyed their trip to Hidden Beach, because others that showed up to this certainly didnt.

Lots of folks think Spring is Natures big show, when everything bursts in bloom, but thats just the opening act. Some of the most amazing spectacles are saved for the grand finale in Fall, and East Texans have front row seats. Master Gardeners worked long hours in summers 100+ heat to get Jasper Arboretum ready to welcome visitors to the fall extravaganza that unfolds in September and October. Most species of migratory birds of North America pass through here on their way south, most notably hummingbirds of every description. Some hummingbird feeders will have 40 or 50 hummers lined up all during September. Hummingbirds.net says, Banding studies suggest that individual birds may follow a set route year after year, often arriving at the same feeder on the same day. Jasper Master Gardeners like Martha and Gene Hamilton are more interested in the monarch butterfly migration. Jasper sits square in the middle of one of three migratory paths. Its only in the last few decades that scientists realized that monarchs from all over North America go to Mexicos wooded canyons to hibernate for winter. In spring, they fan out along three major flyways. West coast butterflies go through El Paso and Arizona, Rocky Mountain monarchs go through the Texas Hill
Country, and all monarchs destined for the central plains, eastern states and northeast Canada migrate through East Texas. Fall is homecoming for descendants of the super-generation that overwintered in Mexico. Whats really amazing is that it is not the same individual butterflies that were here in the spring, Martha Hamilton says. And yet, they somehow know their way back.
As they spread north, the monarch stops and lays eggs wherever they find milkweed. Then the next generation continues the journey. The ones who reach the Canadian border may be their great great grandchildren, and by the time their offspring come back to Texas in the fall, they are many times-great-great grandchildren of the monarch who pollinated your gardens last May.
Outdoor classroom provides benches for potting, sinks, and view of butterfly garden
Fall Fest has been a tradition in Jasper for years, always the first Saturday in October. This year Master Gardeners and Lakes Area Hospice are planning the first annual Butterfly Fest to expand the event, normally on the courthouse lawn, to include many activities at the Jasper Arboretum on Water Street. The new tourist train should make that one block up-and-down hill journey a pleasure. We want them to name the new shuttle train the Butterfly Express, Martha Hamilton joked. We want everyone to think of Jasper as the Butterfly Capital of Texas. The Jasper Arboretum Project was started many years ago by the Womans Civic Club of Jasper. Estelle Debney, who was president, led the campaign to get the city to set aside land on both sides of Sandy Creek from Main Street to Highway 96 to be developed as public gardens and a park. Dr. Dave Creech, renowned horticulturalist from Stephen F. Austin State University, developed a long-term plan that included fountains, nature paths and formal gardens. Until she died, Debney worked tirelessly to raise funds for the Jasper Arboretum in spite of setbacks like Hurricanes Rita and Ike. A non-profit organization continues her work, but they needed more volunteers for the hands-on hard labor. Jasper Master Gardeners took on building the greenhouse and butterfly garden on the north bank near the library and fire hall. The back of the greenhouse includes an outdoor classroom and potting shed with a view of all the wildlife along the banks of Sandy Creek. Future plans include a footbridge and walking trails on the south side, with Master Naturalists aiding in development of a nature center. At Butterfly / Fall Fest, volunteers from both organizations will host short educational programs for kids at the greenhouse, and free adult programs every half-hour in the courthouse. Chamber of Commerce director Liz Street suggested the idea after seeing the Nacogdoches AgriLife office offer programs at Blueberry Festival. It gives people a chance to come inside and rest a minute, cool off or warm up--you never know about fall weather in East Texasand go back and enjoy more of the festival, Street said. Martha Hamilton, one of many presenters, will show how she raises and tags monarchs, followed by a release down at the Arboretum butterfly garden. Information from our tagged butterflies is helping scientists understand the migration, Hamilton said, And anyone can learn to do what we do and help. With luck and a lot of community support, project director Hugh Pickle says the first of two ponds should be ready for the grand opening Oct. 6. Centerpiece for the meditation pond on Water Street is a yard-long piece of petrified wood from Jasper County donated by Campbell Timberland Management. Its hollow center allows for it to be fitted as fountain. We want everyone to know this is a work in progress and always will be but now they can really see our progress, Pickle said. Beth Pickle says the lantanas, vines and milkweed in the butterfly garden may seem small this year, but just wait. She uses an old saying to explain why transplants take a while to get going: first year they sleep, next year they creep, and third year they leap. Most of the plants, mulch and materials were donated by master gardeners and local businesses, according to the Pickles. With no irrigation in place yet, volunteers had to haul water by hand to keep the young plants alive. For several years the Arboretum and Master Gardeners were playing catch-up after Hurricanes Rita
David Godefroys picture of motley crew: Gene Hamilton, Hugh Pickle and Brent Meaux
and Ike, trying to get the library and Beaty Orton gardens and Kiwanis Park back in shape. Now that they see the greenhouse up and full, and the butterfly gardens and pond taking shape, were getting all kinds of community support, Pickle said. All of this is being done by donations, money raised at plant sales, and volunteer labor. The city has been very supportive, and they have leant their crews to clear the south bank and more, but other than that, its not tax dollars but our sweat equity that is building all this. Pickle says every time they told people what they needed, donations and contributions rolled in. Few Concrete donated material for the walkways in the greenhouse. Jasper County donated brick from the old gym building for the patio. Texas Electric Co-op donated wood. Walmart donated pallet loads of garden materials. L & L loaned equipment to move dirt. Coburns will supply irrigation materials. This is a project we want the community to be able to enjoy and admire for a long time to come, said Master Gardener president David Godefroy. I see this as something that brings so many of our organizations together to work for a common goal, something that we can all be proud of and continue to build and learn from for generations to come, said Jasper Ag agent Chadd Caperton. Donations always still needed: Martha Hamilton says they need pots of all sizes and description, potting mix, perlite, vermiculite, etc. Theyve also had generous donations of plants, man of which can be counted as giving twice : first they go in the gardens, and then we propagate more for plant sales according to Hamilton. Master Gardener plant sales now go toward the Sittin Pretty fund, whose goal is to provide big lawn swings, many benches and picnic tables. For questions, call the AgriLife office at 409-384-3721.

Randall and Taylor conquer BudLight Fall Series -Jasper kick-off on August 18
By: Jodie Warner
The BudLight Fall Series-Jasper on Lake Sam Rayburn began on Saturday August 18 at Cassels Boykin in Zavalla. Tournament director Bryan Davis said that he had about 16 boats pay in to fish, but only 11 came back for the weigh in. Anglers complained of cloudy conditions and tough wind throughout the day causing them to catch lower weight limits, if a limit at all. Donald Randall and Don Taylor came out on top with a total weight of 19.21 pounds with a five fish limit. They said they fished deep...about 20-22 feet. Jokingly, they laughed that they fished with rods and reels, but then revealed, we used jigs and spoons. According to the pair the fishing was good all day, kind of slow until about 10 a.m., it was slow from about 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.mbut we did have one that was about five pounds [anchoring the limit.] The notorious team of Harold Allen and Albert Collins came in second place in the kick off event with a five fish limit weighing 16.08 lbs. Allen said that they fished points and creek beds with big worms and jigs. They said, it was a slow day, we caught a couple in the first place [we went to,] we went to the second place and caught one or two, it was just one or two bites wherever we went. Allen and

Donald Randall and Don Taylor won 1st place and brought home $1,000 for their 19.21 lb limit. We were fishing grass, about 15 foot with soft plastics, they said. The team also stated, we started out shallow, looking for top water bites and couldnt catch anything. We did catch a couple on a swim jig and then we started working deep. They also insist, the sun killed us today, we needed the sun. We had a pretty big lull from midmorning until about 12:30-1 p.m., [then] it started getting a little bit better and we caught some better fish. Trpkosh and Fisher said that they were only able to cull three times during the process of the day. They would like to thank their sponsors: Mercury, Legend Boats, Santone Lures, and Power Poles. The Big Bass title was captured by Jared Dean who weighed in a 7.60 lbs big bass, more than half of he and partner Jason Deans full weigh in of 13.20 lbs. Dean wasnt the first to weigh in a sevenpounder though, the tournament saw a 7.42 lbs fish from the team of Larry Badgett and Shane Howell. The next event for the BudLight Fall Series-Jasper will be at Umphrey Pavilion on October 6. For more information about the BudLight series visit www.budlighttrail.com. Jared Dean caught the big bass of the day totaling 7.60 lbs.
Harold Allen and Albert Collins Michael Trpkosh and Jeff Fisher Todd Castledine and Brent Broussard Jared Dean and Jason Dean
Collins said that, it was a gradual process, we caught about 15 keepers, [and] it took a lot of culling by ounces. Allen was using IRod and US Reels while Collins used a Jones Custom Rod. They fished shallow at first at about five to eight feet of water, but said that they caught them as deep as 20 feet. Michael Trpkosh and Jeff Fisher came in third at the event with a five fish limit totaling 14.16 lbs. Harold Allen and Albert Collins snagged second place with 16.08 lbs.
Trpkosh and Fisher round out the top three with 14.16 lbs.

quit at 10. Absolutely no action on top and very few fish on graph ... but I had 6 strikes and hung two using the swimbait/strolling technique. One was a monster that really banged the bait, started up to jump like a bass but then turned and fought. It was a really big fish regardless but just came unbuttoned. I got this one in and dont know what it weighed because my new scales quit working. Fish was in about 30 feet of water.

Fishing Forecast
September 2012 brings the promise of cooler weather. Fall is in the air and Big Sam has started to come out of the grip of another hot summer. The nights will be getting longer and things will begin to cool down. The lake has been in great shape this year and you should find the lake level about 4 to 6 Lynn Atkinson ft below pool. That is about the normal cell 979-220-0251 level for this time of year. Keep this in Reel Um N Guide mind when youre running around the Service, lake as you may see a little more timber www.rayburncountry.com above the water. That also means there is a lot more lurking just under the surface. If youre new to the lake get a couple of maps because each will show things a little differently. Look at the areas that have timber then add a little extra to the timberline, that will help you stay a little safer. There is still timber that moves around from time to time so always keep an eye open for what we call floaters. One day they may be just off a point and the next, 100 yards or more away. As the water drops you will start to see more sandbars and long points just under the water. Be a little cautious as a change in water color from a green tint to a sandy color could mean youre coming up to one of those places Big Sam is the biggest lake that is solely in Texas with miles of shoreline to fish; most of it undeveloped; which gives you the feeling of being at one with nature. The shad will start to move toward the pockets and the fish will be right behind them. The hydrilla is still spotty but you have some bass using whatever they can find for cover. Fall is a great time for the top water bite. I cant think of any other bait than the Stanley Ribbit to cover a lot of water and find some feeding fish. A couple more baits to try are Yellow Magic or Spook Jr. Sometimes they want something buzzing across the water, sometimes they want a bait to just sit, with a small pop now and then. Walking the dog with the spook is one of my favorites. The Stanley spinner bait is one to use this time of year, cover a lot of water and pickup a few fish. White or shad color to start with but dont leave out the chartreuse or citrus colors. Sometimes color makes the difference in catching a few fish or a bunch of fish. Using crank baits off the points, creek channels and ledges will find a few fish as they move in chasing the shad. There should be some fish schooling and a small crank bait or trap will get a few in the boat for some fast and fun action. Now on the deeper side of things, dragging a Stanley Football Jig around the points and creek channels can be a way to pick up some good fish. This is something that I like to do but I think about how a crawfish moves along the bottom. Keeping my dragging to slow movements, with a few hops now and then, most of the time they hit it on the fall. You really have to feel the fish suck the bait in and then set the hook. Most folks never feel the fish suck it in, all they feel is the bait dropping back to the bottom. The Carolina and Texas rigs will also work around the points, ledges and deep drops out to 27 foot. The fish have been scattered out and staying on cover for a few days before moving on. Feeling the bite is the key here and having good rods and line makes all the difference. American Rodsmiths has some great rods that fit this bill. They can, with practice, help an angler tell if they really have a bite or the bait is just hitting the bottom of the lake. The guys that feel the bite are the ones catching the bigger fish and leaving you in the dust. More information about different rods and line to come. The Crappie have been active all year and will start to be more active around the brush piles as fall gets here. They should start to get into the fall pattern before moving up the river and creeks as they do each year. Dont sit at home and miss out on the fun. Weve seen a fall trip boat 100 fish as they move up the river. Everyone has loved the pontoon with the shade and the changing room with the port-opotty. We even have a fan that can help if you get too hot out there. It makes the trip a lot nicer for everyone. Get your fall trip booked. We can handle up to 8 anglers. Dont forget about the white bass that move up river in the late fall and spring. Some of these trips can load a cooler in a hurry with action and fun for everyone. Yes these fish are good eating fish here on Sam Rayburn. The kids can catch a fish that thinks its a bull in a china closet. Nothing is more exciting than watching them Reel um N.

The D-Shad is a new breed of soft plastic jerk bait. It has a streamlined body designed to give that side-to-side twitching action, but the tail is thicker and heavier so when you kill the bait it sinks level and gives a little shimmy. It will work great by itself weightless for twitching, but also give it a try on your Carolina Rig, or behind your Chatterbaits or Scroungers. However you use the new D-Shad you are sure to catch them!

less than 10% in my estimation. I have not fished any further north than Housen Bay for the past several weeks so dont know what the submerged grass situation is mid-lake to the northern portions. I hear that the deeper grass (hydrilla) on the upper half is hard to come-by but that the shallow vegetation (2-12 ft) is in good shape. Down south we dont have as much deep grass as we did in June but we still have lots of deep hydrilla if you know where to look. Actually, I like the scattered hydrilla better as the fish dont have as many options and the bass are slightly more concentrated. On the southern end there is hydrilla in depths of 10 to 24 feet with the deeper grass currently harder to find but still in decent amounts. As far as the economic conditions of lake area businesses, I believe things have improved some this summer compared to last summer. I know there are more locals and camp owners using the lake since there now is ample water around their piers and docks.
I also see more of them on the water. However, the high price of gas has hampered boaters from driving in from Alexandria, Lake Charles and Houston. Even so, there has been an obvious increase in boat traffic summer 2012 when compared to Summer 2011. Also, we have had multiple major tournaments return this year including several scheduled for early this month such as Skeeter Bass Champs Championship with headquarters at Paradise Point which is located in Toledos Mill Creek. There is no doubt that things are improving. Fishing has been excellent this year on The Bend with lots of bass over 10 getting photographed. I expect a double digit bass to be weighed in during the Skeeter Bass Champs Championship. The best way to deal with hunting accidents is to prevent them before they occur. Once you pull the trigger, theres no bringing a bullet back. Hunters can go along way towards preventing tragic hunting accidents by following the 10 Commandments of Shooting Safety. Youve read them before. Now read them again. It might save your life or someone elses. RULE 1: Treat every firearm or bow and arrow with the same respect you would show a loaded gun: No gun is more dangerous than one that is presumed to be unloaded. When you pick up a gun, always keep the muzzle pointed at the ground or overhead. The idea is to avoid pointing it at other people. Be sure the chamber and magazine are empty and that the action remains open until you are ready to discharge the firearm.
RULE 2: Always keep the muzzle of a firearm pointed in a safe direction: |Never point a firearm of any caliber at anything that you do not intend to shoot. Horseplay with unloaded guns is unacceptable. Make sure all guns remain on safety until ready to be discharged. RULE 3: Be sure of your target and of what is in front of and beyond your target : Mistaken identity is a leading cause of hunter related accidents. Never shoot a game animal you think is a game animal. Know exactly what it is you are shooting at before clicking the safety. Know what is in front of and behind the target. Know your gun or bow and how far bullets or arrows can travel. Never shoot at flat or hard surfaces, such as rock, water or steel.

With the beginning of hunting season just around the corner, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Game Wardens would like to remind hunters to have fun, be safe and BE LEGAL. Here is check list hunters should follow before heading to the field: Buy your new hunting / fishing license Texas licenses expired August 31 Check for legal means and methods in the county you are hunting.
Carry your current hunting license as this may have your hunter education number listed below your name and address. Clearly identify your target before pulling the trigger. Carry a sharp knife; cut out the date (month and day) of kill on deer and turkey tags and immediately after kill, attach appropriate tag to the deer or turkey. Carry a ball-point pen; fill out ranch and
county name on back of deer and turkey tags, and dont forget the deer log on the back of the license. Carry a state drivers license or state personal identification certificate if you are 17 years of age or older. Fill out a Wildlife Resource Document to accompany any wildlife resource, or part of a deer or turkey that you give to someone else.
Keep all game animals and game birds in an edible condition. As an additional safety precaution, always point the muzzle in a safe direction, and keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire.

Its time to purchase your Texas hunting & fishing licenses for the 2012-2013 season. Current hunting license expired August 31. Each year, about 2.1 million hunting and fishing licenses are purchased through the agencys 28 field offices, more than 58 state parks and at over 1,600 retailers across Texas. Texas Parks & Wildlife offers online license purchases at www.tpwd.state.tx.us/buy or by phone (800-895-4248) with a $5 convenience fee required for each transaction. Call center hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday Friday. The online transaction system is available 24/7. A transaction receipt may be printed at the time of purchase for online and a confirmation number is provided for phone orders, and the physical license is mailed separately. Confirmation numbers will verify that a license has been purchased, which is sufficient for dove hunting, but will not allow hunters to take fish or wildlife that require a tag. In addition to a hunting license, all wing shooters will need to purchase a game bird stamp. To hunt dove or teal in September, a Migratory Game Bird Stamp ($7) is required. Duck hunters also need to purchase a Federal Duck Stamp and receive HIP (Harvest Information Program) certification. HIP certification involves a brief survey of previous years hunting success and is conducted at the time licenses are purchased. Certification will be printed on the license. Lifetime license holders must also be HIP-certified and purchase the Federal Duck Stamp to hunt migratory birds. All other state stamp endorsements are included with a lifetime license. There are other mandatory endorsements to consider at the time of purchase, too. An Upland Game Bird Stamp ($7) is required to hunt all non-migratory game birds, including turkey, quail, pheasant and chachalaca. Of course, anyone who purchases the Super Combo license package, the best bang for the buck at $68, automatically gets these needed stamps. Sportsmen ages 65 and older qualify for a discounted Senior Super Combo for $32. Duck hunters will still need to purchase a Federal Duck Stamp. For younger hunters looking forward to many years of hunting ahead, the purchase of an $1,800 Lifetime Super Combo is a very good deal.
A Hunter Education Certification is required of any hunter born on or after Sept. 2, 1971 and who is at least 17 years old. For hunters who are unable to work in a hunter education course before hunting season for whatever reason, TPWD does offer a deferral option that allows people 17 years of age or older a one-time only extension to complete the states hunter education requirements. The individual must first purchase a hunting license and then may purchase the deferral option #166. Hunters using the deferral must be accompanied by someone 17 years old or older also licensed to hunt in Texas. The accompanying individual must have completed hunter education or be exempt from the requirements (born before Sept. 2, 1971). The extension is good for one license year, by which time the person with the deferred option needs to complete a hunter education course. This option is not available to those who have ever received a conviction or deferred adjudication for lack of hunter education certification. These folks must still take the course before going afield. Be sure to read the Outdoor Annual for the state and region you are hunting in. Bag limits, seasons for each game animal are outlined for each. If you have any questions please call Parks & Wildlife for clarification.

Texas dove season in the North and Central Dove Zones will run from Saturday, Sept. 1 through Wednesday, Oct. 24 and reopen Saturday, Dec. 22 through Sunday, Jan. 6, with a 15-bird daily bag and not more than two white-tipped doves. The South Zone dove season will run Friday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Oct. 28, reopening Saturday, Dec. 22 through Tuesday, Jan. 22 with a 15-bird daily bag and not more than two white-tipped doves. The Special White-winged Dove Area will be restricted to afternoon-only (noon to sunset) hunting the first two full weekends in September running from Sept. 1-2 and 8-9 and reopen when the regular South Zone season begins on Friday, Sept. 21 through Sunday, Oct. 28 and again from Saturday , Dec. 22 through Friday, Jan. 18. The Special White-winged Dove Area season takes four of the allowable 70 days, so when the regular season opens, this area must close four days earlier than the rest of the South Zone. During the early two weekends, the daily bag limit is 15 birds, to include not more than four mourning doves and 2 white-tipped doves. Once the general season opens, the aggregate bag limit will be 15 with no more than 2 white-tipped doves. For hunters looking for hunting opportunities on public lands, check out TPWDs Public Hunting Program, TPWD offers affordable access to quality hunting experiences with the purchase of a $48 Annual Public Hunting (APH) Permit.
With approximately 5,000 special supervised and guided hunts and over 200 public hunting areas, including Wildlife Management Areas, State Parks, U.S. Forest Service lands and private lands, public hunts are an economical way to experience nationally renowned Texas hunting. A map of Public Hunting Lands is available online at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/huntwild/hunt/public/lands/maps or at a Texas Parks & Wildlife office. The $48 Annual Public Hunting Permit provides nearly year-round hunting on approximately 1.2 million acres of land. The increasingly popular dove hunting areas are offered through this system.
