Valli Class/Set: Thales8 Date:02/12/11 Time/Period: 2 Room: 26 Number of pupils: 28 Subject: Spreadsheet Lesson 3 Scheme of Work: Level:5 Learning Objectives (WALT): Understand why we use advanced formula. Use advanced formula to obtain new information. Intended Learning Outcomes (WILF): All must be able to: know why they use advanced formula. Most must be able to: have used advanced formula in a spreadsheet, including: MAX, MIN, AVERAGE, SUM, COUNT, MODE Some must be able to: create a spreadsheet to manage your pocket money. Keywords: advanced formulae, max, min, average, sum, count, mode. Reference to cross-curriculum issues (Literacy, Numeracy, Citizenship, PSHE, ECM..): Mathematics Entry ( 2.5 mins) Resources Starter (5 mins) : Maths: 2minutes Which cell has: The biggest number? , The smallest number? What is the average? What is the most common?

How many numbers are there? This is quite difficult to do with a large set of numbers. If you were in Maths, you would use a calculator and do certain things. In ICT, we use formula to make it easier! Main ( 45 mins) Explain WILF Objectives Demo to students: Calculating the: The largest number (the MAXimum) MAX(A1:A5) The smallest number (the MINimum) MIN(A1:A5) The average number AVERAGE(A1:A5) The most common number (the MODE) MODE(A1:A5) A set of numbers added together. SUM(A1:A5) A total of numbers available (the COUNT) COUNT(A1:A5) Todays Task (20mins): Complete the practice task : L5 Formula Practice Then complete L5 Advanced formula task. Under Moodle \ Thales 8 Tech ICT \ Spreadsheets \ Lesson 3 NOTES: Save regularly (in your Year 8 Spreadsheet folder) Use the teach-ict help videos before asking for help! L5 Formula Practice: Enter the correct formula in the marked boxes. See how many you can get right. L5 Formula Practice.xls L5 Advanced formula task.xls Y8 SS L2.ppt

L5 Advanced formula task.xls: 1. Add cell borders and other formatting to make all the data into one table. 2. In cells G4:G9 write a forumula to calculate the highest (MAX) score for each student. 3. In cells H4:H9 write a forumula to calculate the lowest (MIN) score for each student. 4. In cells I4:I9 write a formula to calculate the average (AVERAGE) score for each student. 5. In cells J4:J9 write a formula to count the number of tests (COUNT) each student has taken. 6. In cells K4:K9 write a formula to add up (SUM) the total score for all tests taken for each student. 7. Create a suitable and fully labelled chart showing each student, their highest, lowest and average score. Create it on it's own page. 8. Answer the model questions 9. Sort table by Total Score. Model Questions: 1. Why would a teacher use a spreadsheet like this one to store test scores? Explain why it is better than doing it on paper. 2. Why do you think the teacher wanted a graph producing for this information? Why is it better? 3. Why do you think it is better for formula to be used instead of just typing in the highest, lowest, count and average? 4. For Chris, enter a score of 12 for Test 4. Explain what changes on the spreadsheet and why (there will be more than one thing) 5. What could you add to this model to improve it? Improve the model, then explain what you did to improve it in the box below. Hint: A,B,C Plenary ( 5 mins): Spreadsheets Hangman Game: http://www.teach-ict.com/ks3_old/unit7_4/starters/barthangman10.html Exit ( 2.5 mins) Differentiation (related to Learning Outcomes) Create a spreadsheet to manage your pocket money. It should: Have a title Show how much pocket money you get each month A list of everything you spend your pocket money on and how much it costs. A total of the spend (formula) Amount left after you have bought everything (formula) The highest amount spent in one go (formula) The lowest amount spent in one go (formula) The number of things you bought in a month (formula) A pie chart showing all individual items bought in a month. Suitable formatting should be used so it looks professional. Special Education Needs: Other adult support/roles: Homework return, feedback and setting: No homework, feedback given through markbook Assessment including WILF: Markbook in Dropbox Evaluation of the lesson
