ew Jersey will figure prominently in the
Republican National Convention, held next
week, August 27 through 30, in Tampa, Florida.
Governor Chris Christie, once believed to be a strong
contender for the vice presidential slot, will star
instead as the keynote speaker. In 2004, a little-known
state senator from Illinois named Barack Obama gave
the keynote speech at the Democratic National
Convention in Boston.
Vinelanders can be proud of another Republican
asked to take to the podium in Tampa next week. Some
may even remember attending classes with him at
Vineland High School in the early 1970s. Sam Olens,
today the Attorney General for the State of Georgia,
spent most of his childhoodfrom age 5 to graduating
high schoolright here in Vineland.
Some may note that Olens is on a similar path to
Christies rise to political fame. Both spent time in
county politics in their respective states. Then, both
were given the opportunity to serve as top law man as
State Attorney General (Christie was appointed,
Olens was elected).
Late last week, after finding out about Olens back-
ground and pre-eminent speaking engagement,
Grapevine Editor and Publisher Mike Epifanio con-
ducted the following phone interview with Olens.
Grapevine: Its interesting that the keynote speak-
er at the GOP Convention this year is Chris Christie,
New Jerseys governor, who took a similar path in
politics as you. Do you think beyond being Georgias
Attorney General? I know youve only been in office
for a year, but youre being touted as a rising star in
the Republican Party.
Olens: I just try to do the best job I can. If you work
really hard, good things happen to you. Just move for-
ward each day.
G: Can you tell me a little bit about your back-
ground and the time you spent here in Vineland?

School Days Fast Approaching
With just two weeks left before most schools open, its time to
wind down from the summer. Moms are sighing with relief, kids and
teachers are not so sure theyre ready to leave summer behind and
get back into the routine.
Ready or not, the dates are nearing. So take a look at this run-

Wednesday, September 5. These schools
include all Vineland Public Schools,
Cumberland Christian School, St. Marys
School (in Vineland), and all Bridgeton
Public Schools.
Our Lady of Mercy Academy asks that all
students report on September 5, but
September 6 is the first day of classes.
Sacred Heart High School has September 5
as Freshmen Orientation Day (8 a.m. to 12:45
p.m.), September 6 for Sophomores, Juniors
and Seniors (8 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.), and
September 7 for all students to report (8 a.m.

Take Notice of Two Homegrown
Sports Figures
The citizens of New Jersey, if they havent
already, should take notice of two individuals
that are having successful years in the world
of professional baseball and NASCAR racing.
Mike Trout from Millville (born in
Vineland) is completing his rookie year in
professional baseball with the Los Angeles
Angels. Mike, an outfielder with the Angels
continues to have a stellar year in all aspects of
the game. Heis currently leading the American
League in batting with a .343 batting average,
runs scored (96), and stolen bases (39).
Martin Truex, Jr. fromthe Mayetta section
of Stafford Township (born in Trenton), made
his first NASCAR Nationwide Series start in
2001 at Dover International Speedway. This
year in 23 starts Martin has 13 top 10 finishes.
Martin is currently in sixth place in the
NASCAR standings and has a very good
chance to make the cut-off for the race for the
Sprint Cup which starts on September 16 at
Chicagoland Speedway and ends on
November 18 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Here is hoping that Mike Trout and
Martin Truex, Jr. finish their seasons with
big smiles on their faces.

Processing. The couple met in April of 2007 and became engaged on September
29, 2011. A June 15, 2013 wedding is planned.

Savannah Paige was born to Tracy and
Paul Simpkins of Maryland at 12:22 a.m.
on April 3, 2012, at Easton Hospital. She
weighed 7 lbs and was 18.5 inches long.
She joins her big brother, Matt, and her big
sister, Ashley. Her paternal grandparents
are Brian and Robin Dunn and Paul
Simpkins. Her maternal grandparents are
Al Berry and Mary Jo Carpenter. Savannah

How did it shape who you are as a man
and as an elected official?
O: I moved to Vineland when I was five
years old when my mom died. So my dad,
sister, and brother lived originally above the
bowling alley on the Boulevard. Then we
moved to a home on Victory [Avenue], and
then to the Barclay Apartments. I generally
lived with my aunt and uncle for several
years. They owned Liss Bakery on Landis
Avenue. My dad died when I was 12 and my
uncle died a couple years later. So my aunt
raised me. Then from my graduation from
Vineland High School in 75 I went to
American University, got two degrees in
DC, got my BA and MA there, and then in
1983 I moved to Atlanta to go to Emory
Law School. Then I met my future wife the
summer before my last year of law school.
Ive been living in metro Atlanta ever since.
G: With that adversity as a child, all the
tragedy and moving around, Im curious
to know whether that has made you a
more resilient person.
O: My father and uncle were active in
Jewish War Veterans, my aunt was very
active in Hadassah, and I think children
learn their values from their family. Its
learned and it doesnt come naturally. One
of the values I learned from my aunt and
uncle was the value to give back. To volun-
teer in ones community is to be a servant
for the community. Id like to think that
that has been mirrored by my activity in
numerous non-profit organizations, my
public service as a county commissioner
and now the attorney general.
G: Did your brother and sister stay in
the area? When I got an e-mail from Ruth
Hoffman, I think she mentioned that she
taught with your sister, Jackie.
O: My sister is also in metro Atlanta and
my brother is in South River, NJ. My broth-
er works for an insurance company out
there, Met Life. He went to Rutgers and
stayed in central and north Jersey the
whole time.
G: You mentioned your father and
uncle being involved with the Jewish War
Veterans. I know your religion is very
important to you. It was also somewhat of
a campaign issue. [In fact, Olens is the
first Jewish candidate to win a statewide,
partisan race in Georgia.]
O: No, I think that its very important
for everyone to be involved in their faith
and active in their faith. I dont think it
makes a different what religion you are.
The important thing is that you have a
belief system and that you follow the tenets
of your individual religion.
G: I read a recent article with coverage
of a commencement address you gave at

which you mention your Vineland roots.
O: When I do graduation talks, I often
talk about my upbringing and I use it to
show two things: many folks arent born
with the best [background], but if you work
really hard and get a great education, we
live in a country where anything is possible.
The second thing I talk about is to be active
in ones community and to give back. So for
instance, I talk about how I worked one
summer in Norma at Live and Dressed
Poultry. They were making chicken patties
back then. Every morning when I went to
work, I passed the front of the chicken line.
I still eat chicken and I still love chicken
livers, but I just try not to think much
about the chicken line [laughs].
G: Any other colorful experiences you
like to remember when you think back to
your days in Vineland?
O: I worked at the hospital and I worked
at the McDonalds on Delsea Drive. I
worked at Armstrong Glass in Millville. I
think its called Kerr now. I still have some
family there. I just talked to Louis Rothman
a week or two ago. I still keep up with some
folks there. My brother in particular used to
take me all the time to Pasquales Pizza.
Ive never outgrown that love affair for
Italian food. I take the perspective that
Italian food seven days a week is a good
week. We didnt live too far from Sacred
Heart Catholic Church. I remember the
smell on Sunday afternoons of families
cooking supper. I would always try to get
invited. Nothing wrong with a good bowl of
pasta. Vineland was a great place to grow
up. It was a very safe environment.
G: When was the last time you visited?
O: Probably about seven or eight years
ago. Sometimes when Im going to go visit
my brother up north or if Im going to the
Shore I stop by in Vineland.
G: How did the speaking engagement
for the Republican National Convention
come about?
O: Ive been very active in Governor
Mitt Romneys campaign. I lead his cam-
paign in the state of Georgia. Ive had the
honor of being with him several days on the
campaign trail out of state, in addition to
assisting him in our state. I was in Chicago
in meetings with other attorneys general
and I got a call from a fellow from the
Romney campaign and he was asking me if
I would speak at the convention. I immedi-
ately said yes. Its a huge honor and Im
very humbled by the request. I hope to do a
very good job for the governor.
G: Do you have any ideas on the topics
you might touch upon during your
speech?
O: Weve been very involved in numer-
ous issues concerning the overreach of the
[Obama] administration with things such

active attorneys general fighting the issues
concerning separation of powers.
G: Its a huge opportunity for national
exposure. I know you said you would like
to focus on your job as attorney general,
but Im sure youve entertained the notion
of seeking some higher office. Maybe if
Romney is elected, an invitation might
come along to serve on his cabinet?
O: I think thats highly unlikely.
Candidly I think people who think too much
about where they want to go next are the
ones who dont pay attention to where they
are now. If you do a hard days work every
day, good things will happen to you. My
success is due to the values and work ethic I
hold. I dont look at opportunities that will
come down the road, just take care of what
youre doing now and those things will take
care of themselves. Representing the state
as the states lawyer is a great honor, an
awesome responsibility, and its important
to keep in light the many benefits youve
been afforded.
G: Have you been given a time slot or
the day of when youll be speaking?
O: I have but its not public yet. I can tell
you that its very good day and a very good
time, but thats the most I can tell you at
this stage. Its in the height of prime time.
G: Do you and your wife have children?
O: Yes. Ive been married to Lisa for 27
years. We have two children, Lauren and
Jonathan. Lauren is in China. She just
graduated college and is teaching English
and getting her fluency in Mandarin as we
speak. My son is entering his sophomore
year at Syracuse. He somehow decided he
wanted to live in a cold environment with a
lot of snow. I still remember the winters in
Vineland when they would pile the snow
into walls.
G: I appreciate the time that youve
given me. I know that youre very busy,
especially leading up to the end of this
month with the speech coming up. Im
sure its a very important opportunity for
you and I wish you the best of luck with it.
O: I greatly appreciate it, thank you very
much. I

Martial Arts Students Bring Home 10 Medals
Cumberland County
Martial Arts Training
Center competed in the
2012 AAU National
Taekwondo
Championships held in
Fort Lauderdale, Florida
in early July, as repre-
sentatives of New Jersey.
To be eligible to compete
in the Taekwondo
Nationals, the 14 mem-
bers of this team had to
place in a regional quali-
fier. The AAU Nationals feature the best of the best in Taekwondo from
throughout the United States and various countries such as Puerto Rico,
Argentina, Venezuela, Italy and Australia. These 14 students trained diligently and
ambitiously and brought home 10 National Championship medals.

Winterizing Your Pool
All good things must come to an end.
For swimming pool owners in the north-
eastern U.S., the onset of cool, autumn air
signals the end of summer splashing. Its
also time to begin preparing a pool to
weather winters cold so that, next sum-
mer, the fun can begin again.
Proper winterizing means more than
just covering the pool. The pool must be
cleaned, winter chemicals must be added,
water chemistry must be balanced, and
the water level should be lowered. Most
importantly, winterizing is about freeze
protection, and taking steps to protect the
pool equipment and lines from being split
apart by freezing water.
According to Ann Janowicz, general
manager of Kaspers Pool Supplies and
Spas in Easton, Pa., Any water left in the
lines or equipment will freeze when the
temperature dips below 32F. As the water
freezes, it expands and breaks the equip-
ment. The smaller the line and the more
exposed the line is to the air, the more
susceptible it is to freeze damage.
To prevent freeze damage, water must
be drained or blown out of all pumping,
filtering, heating and chlorinating equip-
ment and other pool plumbing. This is not
always a do-it-yourself project. Every
pool is different, and each will require
specific procedures and equipment to
implement those procedures. Janowicz, a
certified pool operator (CPO) and a direc-
tor of the Northeast Spa and Pool
Association (NESPA) notes that, If you
dont know the exact procedure or if you
do not have the equipment to winterize
correctly, you should call a professional. A
pool is a big investment. Winterizing the
right way can protect that investment and
assure that when the pool is opened in the
spring, it is ready to provide another sum-
mer of enjoyment.
The right time to winterize varies by cli-
mate and individual preference. Many pool
owners opt to close in late August or early
September before leaves begin to fall. Others
heat their water and enjoy swimming into
the early autumn season. In general, pool
closing and winterizing should be done
before the first hard freeze in your area.

Goats Serve as Earth-Friendly
Method to Clear Underbrush
Greate Bay Country Clubs three
newest staff members have an appetite for
poison ivy, and theyre not worried about
picking their way through the golf
courses sometimes heavy underbrush to
find one of their favorite snacks.
I brought three goats on staff to keep
down the underbrush at Greate Bay as an
alternative to using herbicides, said Ken
Thompson, golf course superintendent at
Greate Bay Country Club, a private golf
and lifestyle facility in Somers Point.
Some chemicals can be harmful to trees
and plants, as well as the wildlife that
lives on the golf course. In certain circum-
stances, I believe the goats are a good
alternative to those chemicals.
Robert Damiani, general manager, said
the goats are a welcome addition to
Greate Bay. Exploring natural ways of
managing areas of the golf course makes
good ecological sense, he said.
The three newest members of Greate
Bays familyaffectionately known as
Irene, Francis and Maryare three-
month-old Boer goats, Thompson said.
The breed is hardy in all types of climates
and environments, and these goats in par-
ticular are docile animals who quickly
adapt to people in their surroundings.
Initially, Thompson plans to use the
goats in the naturalized areas between
holes eight, nine, and ten. Next, Irene,
Francis and Mary will spend their time in
the wooded and brush areas along holes
seven and eight. Temporary movable fenc-
ing will be used to contain the animals.
Thompson said that the goats will spend
evenings at his farm in Tuckahoe and that
he will transport them daily to Greate Bay
to ensure their safety.
Damiani said: The goats are peaceful,
natural additions to our serene environ-
ment and we believe that our members
will enjoy having them around.
Thompson requests that everyone avoid
giving treats to the animals, or climbing
into the fenced area with the goats.
Employing the goats to control the
underbrush fits in with Greate Bays ongo-
ing efforts to be a good steward of the envi-
ronment. Greate Bay Country Club cur-
rently holds the designation as a Certified
Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary through
the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary
Program for Golf Courses, an Audubon
International program. The program was
the culmination of a six-year effort to
obtain sanctuary status. Greate Bay
Country Club is the 27th course in New
Jersey and the 794th in the world to
receive the honor; only 2 percent of golf
courses in the world hold this designation.

owntown Vineland is an inter-
esting place. Amid the shops,
the restaurants, the professional
offices, the banks and all of the
other elements that make Landis Avenue a
truly unique place, there are a number of
hidden treasuresthings and places that
are obscure or completely overlooked, but
that nonetheless contribute to visual tapes-
try of the downtown.
With that in mind, see if you can identify
where the following eight items are in the
downtown. The answers are provided at
the end of this column.
1. Owls on a church
2. Old firehouse thats more than 100
years old
3. A machine gun
4. A 102-year-old sculpture
5. A torpedo
6. A black pyramid
7. Two buildings in downtown on the
National Register of Historic Places
8. The smallest park in the city
Consider this your spoiler alert: The
locations of the items noted above are pro-
vided below.
The owls can be seen atop the church in
the 800 block of Landis Avenue on the
south side.
Look for the Reliance No. 2 Fire Station
on 6th Street, between Landis Avenue and
Elmer Street. It is hoped that this building
can be redeveloped in the near future.
The machine gun can be found on the
northwest corner of Landis Avenue and
the Boulevard, in the area known as
Battery Park.
The sculpture is located on the north-
east corner of Landis Avenue and the
Boulevard, in the area known as Arminava
Park. This Barre granite sculpture, com-
missioned in 1911 by Lyon Post #10 of the
Grand Army of the Republic to commemo-
rate the Civil War, stands over 20 feet tall
and was erected at a cost of $300.
The torpedo is found, appropriately
enough, in Torpedo Park, located on the
southwest corner of Landis Avenue and the
Boulevard.
Vineland Public Schools erected the
black Millennium Pyramid Projectcom-
plete with a time capsuleon the southeast
corner of Landis Avenue and the Boulevard,
in the area known as Lucena Park.
The two downtown buildings on the
National Register of Historic Places are the
Landis Theater and the Landis Middle
School.
The smallest park in the city is the clock
tower, located on the north side of Landis
Avenue in the 600 block, directly across
the street from Als Shoes. While certainly
not large enough to play in, the clock tower
is classified as a minipark. I

reetings! The smoothie recipes in
this weeks column are healthy,
easy to make, quick, nutritious and
super tasty. You can supercharge them by
adding a little flaxseed meal, wheat germ,
extra virgin coconut oil, almond butter,
nuts, protein powder and the like. Just
toss in a tablespoon or two of one or more
of the above, and, if needed, add a little
more liquid until it comes together.
Smoothies are a fun way to experiment
with different fruit blends and even veg-
etables. Just toss in some baby spinach or
kale leaves, maybe even a few slices of
avocado, and come up with your own spe-
cialty smoothie right in your kitchen. So
drink up; heres to your good health!
Mango Banana Smoothie
1 mango, peeled, seeded, and cut
into chunks
1 banana, peeled and sliced
1 cup orange juice
1 cup plain Greek yogurt
1 tbs. honey or agave, optional
3/4 cup ice cubes
Place mango, banana, orange juice,
yogurt, honey, and ice into a blender. Blend
until smooth, pour into glasses and serve.
Pina Colada Smoothie
1 1/2 cups fresh pineapple chunks
1 cup unsweetened coconut milk
3/4 cup ice cubes
Pineapple wedges, for garnish on
glass rim
Place
pineapple,
coconut
milk,
banana,
honey, and
ice into a
blender.
Blend until
smooth,
pour into
glasses, gar-
nish each
glass with a
pineapple wedge and serve.
Plum Strawberry Smoothie
1 1/2 cups fresh pineapple chunks
1 cup unsweetened coconut milk
3/4 cup ice cubes

Place plums, strawberries, yogurt,
milk, vanilla extract, honey, and ice into a
blender. Blend until smooth, pour into

Deerfield Township Harvest
Festival SingFest
SingFest (formerly the Idol
Contest) is part of the 2012 Deerfield
Township Harvest Festival coming up
on October 5, 6 and 7, in Rosenhayn.
The preliminary competition will take
place on Friday, October 5, 7 p.m., at
the Festivals Comcast Stage. This
year's theme is "Country Stars &
Stripes" and contestants are asked to
sing a country hit song or a patriotic
song in honor of America.
Finalists selected on October 5 will
compete for the $100 cash prizes on
Sunday, October 7, 1 p.m. at the Festival.

only Deerfield, are invited to enter the

Experience the mastery of the original
1930s film.
K
ing Kong has long been a part
of popular culture and there is
no indication that his appeal to
filmmakers and movie audi-
ences has diminished. For director Peter
Jackson, a 2005 retelling of the giant pri-
mates story using the latest CGI technolo-
gy was obligatory, as was the Dino
DeLaurentiis 70s-style epic rendering. But
for those who want to experience the mas-
tery of the original, the Landis Theaters
monthly series of classic films will provide
the opportunity Thursday evening at 7:30.
The brainchild of director Merian C.
Cooper, the original film version of King
Kong experienced a slow gestation before
it arrived on the silver screen in 1933.
According to the Turner Classic Movie
website, Cooper, who had co-directed sev-
eral documentaries with Ernest
Schoedsack, took an interest in exotic ani-
mals that began with the African film
shoot for The Four Feathers. The study
manifested itself in a monograph he began
working on after principal photography
concluded. Although that writing project
was accidentally destroyed, it planted the
seed for his movie classic.
It was after reading a book on Komodo
dragons that Cooper solidified the idea of a
giant gorilla and oversized dragons on a
prehistoric island. From the start, the
director envisioned his gigantic ape as the
protagonist of a fatalistic narrative, and
completed several outlines of the story
during 1929 and 1930 before approaching
Paramount. The studio was cutting costs
because of the Depression and wasnt inter-
ested in Coopers project, which required
an expensive location shoot in Africa.
After David O. Selznick assumed con-
trol of RKO in 1931, Cooper made a failed
attempt to purchase the rights to Tarzan
with the intention of filming both King
Kong and Tarzan in Africa during an
extended location shoot. By the end of the
year, he pitched his movie to the studio.
RKO turned down the project but hired
the director as an associate producer,
unaware that, in this capacity, Cooper
would discover the ingredient he needed
to guarantee his film a green light.
Assigned to oversee a movie entitled
Creation, Cooper was introduced to Willis
OBriens stop-motion animation tech-
niques and immediately recognized it as
the means to bring King Kong to the
screen. The director
convinced Selznick to authorize a test reel
in order to animate King Kong and deter-
mine if the process would work.
Research, covering everything from
paleontology to the movement of animals,
began. Models were meticulously con-
structed and Schoedsack was recruited.
After three months, the resulting test reel
won over executives at RKO and earned
Cooper an impressive $500,000 budget,
twice that of the studios average produc-
tion, although the film would ultimately
exceed that amount by nearly $300,000,
according to online sources.
After a series of writers, including mys-
tery/adventure author Edgar Wallace, had
a hand in drafting the screenplay, Ruth
Rose was hired to complete a shooting
script apparently supervised by Cooper.
She tightened the story and dialogue and
honored the directors conviction that
Kongs entrance needed to be delayed in
order to cover all expositional details and
build audience anticipation.
Its generally reported that Schoedsack
directed the live action sequences with
Cooper in charge of the movies special
effects, which included rear projection,
stop-motion animation and miniatures of
sets and creatures. FromKongs first battles
to his majestic final stand atop the Empire
State Building, the film improved nearly
every facet of Hollywoods existing technol-
ogy to tell a tragic love story like no other.
The effects also eliminated the need for
a location shoot in Africa. With the New
York theater scene filmed at the Shrine
Auditorium in Los Angeles and the harbor
sequences shot in San Pedro, the production
never left California. Even the Empire State
Building was recreated on the RKO lot.
According to film sources, King Kong
was subjected to numerous edits in the
first four decades of its existence. After its
first screenings, it was reduced from 14
reels to 11 by its directors. And because it
was filmed in pre-Code Hollywood, the
movie was further trimmed for subsequent
releases by the Breen Office, the guardian
of moral decency for American films. Its
ultimate defilement occurred in the 1980s
when it was colorized to appeal to modern
audiences. Thankfully, the movie has since
been cleaned and restored, so audiences

Marching Clan Holds Open
Rehearsal
After many hours of rehearsals and
band camp, the Vineland High School
Marching Clan will hold its annual
Open Rehearsal on Thursday, August 23
at Vineland High High School-South.
This is the first opportunity for the
parents, students, alumni and the gener-
al community to see and hear the new
field show, said William McDevitt,
director. The event is free and open to
the public. Viewers should begin to
gather along the field next to the audi-
torium around 7:30 p.m.
The band was established by students
in 1931 and is now marching and playing
into its 81st season. In addition to playing
at football games and band competitions,
the group also has been a fixture at many
community events. Additional information

Main Road Milling and
Repaving
Weather permitting, South State, Inc.
from Bridgeton, will be working on Main
Road (CR 555) in the City of Vineland,
between Chestnut and Maple asvenue,
milling and repaving. The project is
expected to last from Monday, August 20
through Saturday, August 25.
To provide the least interruption to the
flow of traffic for residents; this will be an
overnight work project with crews begin-
ning daily at 8 p.m. and working through
the night until 6 a.m. Main Road (CR 555)
will remain open while the road work is
being done and emergency vehicles will
have access at all times.
Detours are not anticipated, but delays
can be expected. Cumberland County will
have two inspectors on the job site during
construction hours.
Workplace CPR and AED
The YMCA of Vineland has set
Workplace Adult and Child CPR and AED
and Workplace First Aid to give partici-
pants skills and knowledge to help sustain
life and minimize injury or illness until
advanced medical help arrives.

AED is a full class. It will meet from 5:30
to 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 11 and
Thursday, September 13. The cost is $60
