30th August, 2012

Our Coast to Coast Sports Camp Team are heading off to Totara Springs on Monday, good luck to all students involved! We are always very proud of the way our students represent our school and often hear from parents and other schools about the excellent sportsmanship our students demonstrate. Have a great week!

Good luck to the Year 8 Students involved in the Coast to Coast Sports Camp Team who are competing in the week-long sports competition next week. Thank you to families who have supported their fundraising efforts with chocolate and lolly sales, the cake stall and the sausage sizzle. Students have been busy practising their school chant for the chant competition which is held on the last night of camp and they have stayed on after school today for some last-minute coaching and practices. Students will be involved in a huge variety of team & individual sports at camp including: cross country, swimming, rugby, hockey, volleyball, basketball, netball, soccer, touch, softball, wallball, petanque, croquet, tennis, triathlon, table tennis, draughts, chess, golf, darts, bowls, scramball and athletics. Rotary Speech Competition

On Monday the 27th Tori Gilroy, Taliya Chase and Liam Gilroy went to the Rotary Clubrooms in Morrinsville to present their speech for the judges. There were two other contestants from St Josephs (including the student who won the Rotary speech competition last year). The evening started with a huge meal and entertainment from the Rotary members before progressing onto the speeches. A student from St Josephs delivered a very good speech on Heroes (which won the competition), he was followed by Taliya with her speech on Facebook, then another St Josephs speech on Poverty. These speeches were followed by Toris speech on Trade-me-itis and Liams speech on Expressions and Sayings. Well done to everyone who was involved, also many thanks to the supporting Rotary Club and their lovely meal. Report by Liam Gilroy.

On Tuesday 21st of August, The M.I.S rugby boys travelled to Matamata to compete in the annual Inter-Intermediate Rugby tournament. There were a total of 8 teams from around the Waikato. Our 1st game was against Matamata. We fought hard and tackled our hearts out but not having the ball was too tough and they scored 2 tries to win 14-0. We won by default against Cambridge after they heard of the players we had in our team and didnt turn up! In game 3 we played Berkley, and we discovered a new bulldozing winger by the name of Maly Phorn and we came within inches of the try line, then Berkley scored on the hooter in the corner to break our semi-final hopes. Siggi Holmes and Quinn Hart demonstrated great captaincy throughout the day. We organised a friendly against Maeroa and, after some negative play from the opposition, we kept our heads and came away with a 14-10 victory due to a super charge-down from Siggi and Daniel McQuoid surprisingly finding the ball in his hands to dive over the try line.

The boys all enjoyed their day of rugby and our team was congratulated by their high degree of sportsmanship on and off the field by the organisers of the tournament. Thanks to the parents who helped out with transport, organisation and uniform washing! James Higgins (Teacher in charge)
