Romeo breaks the hearts of FEUs rivals

By Michael Angelo Jugado

ROM being the scoring machine he was in his high school heydays for the FEU-Diliman (formerly known as the FEU-FERN) Baby Tamaraws, Terrence Bill Romeo has gone a long way.
After bridesmaid finishes in the last two seasons, the wards of head coach Bert Flores, who steered FEU to its last title in 2005, were not picked by pundits this year to have a strong showing after losing reed-thin big man Aldrech Ramos, JR Cawaling, Jens Knuttel and lockdown defensive ace Ping Exciminiano to graduation. But the Morayta five is proving naysayers wrong with their stellar showing thus farthanks to Romeo. Ang plano talaga ay kung sino ang mainit sa scoring ay susuportahan namin, said the softspoken Romeo, downplaying FEUs vaunted backcourt triumvirate that includes former MVP RR

Now a year older and wiser, the sweet-shooting combo guard is leading the Far Eastern University Tamaraws charge on its quest to finally capture the elusive title they last brought to the streets of Morayta in 2005 when Arwind Santos, Denok Miranda, Mark Isip, among others, donned FEUs colors.

Garcia and sophomore Mike Tolomia, which is unarguably the most dreaded backcourt in the UAAP today. The 510 juniorwho once scored 83 points in a high school game against UPIS en route to bag the UAAP Season 72 Juniors MVP plumis putting up MVPlike numbers of 18.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg and 4.6 aspg this season while also maturing and embracing the role as one of the

leaders of the rampaging Tamaraws this season. With his backcourt buddy Garcia having abysmal performances the last two games for the Tamaraws, Romeo is more than making up for the slack with his inspired play that even earned him a UAAP Press Corps Player of the Week honor after steering the Green and Gold to an erstwhile 4-0 slate before dropping a close setback to the National University Bulldogs last week.

Ibang Terrence Romeo ang nakikita ng tao this season, said Romeo, who idolizes Los Angeles Clippers playmaker and NBA superstar Chris Paul and former two-time PBA MVP , Willie Miller. Mas focused ako sa pag-involve sa teammates ko, every game ipinapaalala ni coach yun e. And the 2010 UAAP Rookie of the Year is proving to one and sundry that he is not a onedimensional player.

WINNERS ATTITUDE
MARIANO likes USTs title chances.

ALJON MARIANO

Tiger out of the cage

By Patrick Leonard Mayo

F ALL the perennial Final Four contenders in the UAAP the UST Growling Tigers were , again under the radar leading to the UAAP season as they have always been. That is until they strung up six straight victories which included hairline wins.
Thanks to the heroics of comebacking forward, Aljon Mariano, UST ended up on top of the team standings surprising not only the league but the team itself. The return of Mariano to this years lineup of UST did make some noise as he led his team in scoring in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup. But this was still not enough to earn the Tigers the spotlight as sports scribes kept their eyes on UAAP contenders the De La Salle Green Archers, National University Bulldogs and the five-peatseeking Ateneo Blue Eagles. But this is not something new to UST and the hard-nosed forward who was aching to make up for lost time. After being sidelined the whole of last season due to a fractured ankle, the 6-3 Mariano was raring to show what he can do on court. Sobrang down ako last year kasi gusto ko talagang maglaro but I realized that I had to move on. Inisip ko na lang na dapat paghandaan ko yung pagbabalik ko, dapat may impact agad, said the 20-year-old marketing major.

He didnt wait too long to make an impact as the Tigers, who were playing in their second game and were still reeling from an opening day setback to the FEU Tamaraws, again faced adversity as they stared at a 19-point first half deficit against no less than the defending champion Ateneo Blue Eagles. The Tigers escaped with a 71-70 squeaker. Mariano also starred in USTs 58-57 overtime nailbiter over the NU Bulldogs in the second round. Mariano points to his change of attitude inside the court and towards the game as the reason for his recent success in the UAAP . Nagbago talaga yung attitude ko, dahil na din siguro sa injury. Nagpalakas ako at talagang pinaghandaan itong season kaya lumalabas yung tunay kong laro.

KARIM ABDUL

Mixing basketball with studies

By Randolph B. Leongson
THE last man to walk inside the newly finished UST Quadricentennial Pavillion in the Growling Tigers practice is literally the biggest man for the Espaa-based crew. But as some coaches would see this attitude as tardiness, the coaching staff understands him. With a green file case in one hand and a backpack in one arm, the towering Karim Abdul enters the court with a gleeful smile, off from his lessons and on to his comfort zonethe basketball court. I play here as a means of study, the 6-foot-6 student said. I just try to do my best. As an irregular Information Technology student after shifting from his old engineering course, Abdul knows the task is a tough one. You have to practice and study hard. People look up to you, he said. Its an added pressure, but thankfully, I am able to manage it. But if there is one thing the Cameroonian is still furious about, its the unfair treatment he had last season, eliminating him from the MVP race. In every game, Abdul is defended by guys the same size as he. He is grounded and pounded in the post in a serious effort to negate his dominating presence. Abdul disregards the negative criticism fired at him by critics. I dont consider myself an import. Im not trying to prove anything to anybody, Abdul said. Were a team and Im comfortable with them. At times, he still misses his homeland. Nothing feels like home, he said. Back in Cameroon, we play basketball for fun. But here, there is more pressure to play given all of the things concerned. There is more pressure to win. Above all this, he rises to the occasion. This season, Abdul is the leading MVP candidate, garnering a league-best 81.71 statistical points over reigning MVP Bobby Ray Parks of the NU Bulldogs at the end of the first round. But across the scintillating numbers he has been posting consistently, Abdul knows they are up for the big one. We feel like we can be champions this season, he said. Weve been together for a number of years now. In order for us to be a champion, we have to feel like a champion, to play like a champion. All for UST.

SALUTE

From Green Grass to Blue Skies

By Patrick Leonard Mayo

OMEGROWN varsity basketball players who play ball and spend their entire lives in a single academic institution are relatively rare nowadays, with all the jumping and switching happening from one school to another.
In what was supposed to be an entire basketball varsity career spent under the green and white banner, the journey of long-time La Sallian Nico Elorde turned drastically in favor of the blue and white when he moved from Taft to Katipunan. Elorde now wears the colors of rival Ateneo after spending his prep, grade school, high school and freshman year in college at De La Salle. to make for the 5-foot-9 point guard but one that is necessary in order for his career as a varsity player to blossom. With the Green Archers lineup in 2010 overflowing in point guards with the likes of Simon Atkins, LA Revilla and Almond Vosotros, Elordes playing minutes dwindled. My friends from La Salle and the community really had no problems with me transferring. Alam naman nila yung situation ko and nagpaalam naman ako nang maayos sa school, said Elorde who traces

his lineage to the revered Elorde boxing clan, having the legendary Gabriel Flash Elorde for a grandfather. The Blue Eagles were looking to build their backcourt in 2011 which prompted them to recruit the Green Archer who was in floating status.

Warmly embraced
Nagulat ako kasi madali yung pag-accept nila sa kin, referring to the Ateneo community. Napansin ko kaagad na welcome ako sa team na ito, my teammates were all friendly considering I came from a rival school. But the transition on court was not as easy as he thought having been immersed in the La Salle brand of basketball his entire playing career but his one year residency in 2011 helped a lot as far as adjusting to a new

system is concerned. The entire coaching staff really helped me a lot kasi lagi nila akong kinakausap at tinuturuan, he added.

Facing his old team

During the first meeting of the Blue Eagles and the Green Archers in the UAAP this season last July, it was like a bittersweet homecoming for Elorde after seeing his old teammates and playing with them in the UAAP but only this time, he was wearing a different uniform.

Career move
Making the jump to another school, much more to La Salles rival, was not an easy decision

Kahit papaano may pressure din since dun ako nanggaling since prep but I just tried to play my role and coach (Norman Black) told me to just enjoy the game. And by the end of the game, Elordes respect for his old alma mater still showed as he raised his fist as the defeated De La Salle crowd sang their school hymn. Things may have changed and allegiances have shifted but his heart as a true competitor on the court will always be the same.

THE VOICE
By Ruth Navarra

I
HTTP://BRAINREFRESH.TUMBLR.COM

T came as a surprise when Boom Gonzales recently introduced Steph Sy as the comebacking courtside reporter (CSR) of the National University. She replaced the Cebuana beauty queen Muriel Orais. Muriel has gained admirers for her beauty but she has also received flak for her courtside reporting after six games.

UPs Riki Flores and DLSUs Martin Reyes are hot items. Steph Sy (right) is back as courtside reporter.

Some netizens complain about her VOICE. This may seem a petty excuse to kick someone out, especially since there were CSRs in the past whose voices were not exactly the kind youd love to hear for two hours. But it seems it is her actual reporting style that got her booted out. Most netizens say that it is hard to understand what she is saying on television. This is the second time NU has lost its CSR. In Season 73, the soft-spoken Karen Ruzol was also replaced before the first round ended.
HHHHH

Now that we are on the topic

of CSRs, we know that they get the inside scoop on the team that they report on. They are allowed inside the locker rooms during halftimes. The diligent ones even follow the team even on their practices to get some information. It is almost expected that they become friends with the team members that they report on. It is also not surprising to see romance bloom between CSRs and basketball players. Weve seen it in the past and well see it again in the future. Some are open about it like UPs Riki Flores and Martin Reyes. Some were left to wonder about. Heres one we love to speculate on. Questions are often asked whether a CSR beauty and a hotshot cager are flirting, dating or maybe just really good friends. They seem to be unusually close the way she is almost always seen next to him before and after games. On one of the post-game press conferences, their eyes would meet and the two would smile simultaneously. He would mouth some words to her and she would laugh silently. All of these were happening while the members of the press were busy firing questions at their coach. Of course, this could just be a

result of our overactive imagination and maybe even wishful thinking but they do look good together. So if they are still considering if its right to go out, well be cheering on the sidelines with our, Go! Go! Go!
HHHHH

Whether you love him or hate him, there will always be a quotable quote from coach Pido Jarencio. He would give meaningful statements to the press, often about how his team has been underestimated. But he never leaves the room without cracking a joke. When reporters asked about Aljon Marianos injury that sidelined him the previous season, he answered, Bago na ang paa niyan ngayon. Pinalitan na naming ng bago. Paa na ng baka yan ngayon. There was a lot of excitement surrounding the first round clash between the UST Growling Tigers and the De La Salle Green Archers. It was the first time the brothers Jeric and Jeron Teng faced each other in collegiate basketball. Coach Pido openly shared his advice to the older Teng. Sabi ko kay Jeric lagyan niya ng vetsin yung pagkain ni Jeron para antukin, he said.

This time though, they will sport a different look as new addition Sarah Jane Espelita suits up for in the beach volleyball event of the NCAA. With Gena Andayagraduating and now out of the picture and Marinelle Carolino on her last playing year, Espelita serves as newfound hope for the Letran faithfuls. Kakayanin naming mag champion para sa pride ng Letran, said Espelita, a product of Calabarzons grassroots meet, the Southern Tagalog Regional Athletic Association. After coming close to bringing home the trophy in Season 87, Letran will be leaning on the duo of Espelita and veteran Carolino this season. Although adjustments are needed after long-time partners Andaya and Carolino parted ways, Lady Knights Coach Brian Esquibel is confident with his new tandem.

DOUBLE TROUBLE
CAROLINO (left) and Espelita.
ROMY HOMILLADA

Espelita can contribute well on both ends of the court, said coach Esquibel. Ang contribution ni Sarah is yung pagiging malakas mag serve, tsaka confident siya maglaro sa actual game, said Esquibel. Still, Espelita, a third year Financial Management stu-

dent, admits that she still finds it unusual to wear a bikini suit. From being a setter in indoor volleyball, the fivefoot-five Espelita now takes the role of spiker in the beach volleyball team, a big change in her game, to give way to Carolino. Carolino was the youngest among sisters who played volleyball for CSJL during their respective college careers. When asked about the changes she encountered on sand, she said it was more difficult to play beach than indoor volleyball because it required more effort and coordination since there are only two players in each team. Good thing Espelita fits well because of her high leaping ability which is a key factor in beach volley. Mataas tumalon si Sarah. Advantage niya yun, said Athletics Officer Bernie Ramos of Espelita. True enough, this proves that Espelita is the best replacement to Andaya. Espelitas aerial plays made her the ace of her former high school squad, Palahanan National High School in Batangas.

OME people fall for what we call love at first sight but for Archand Bagsit, it is just another famous cliche.

other glance at the sport, Bagsit felt a different heartbeat, one that said: This is where you truly belong. The 21-year old Bagsit was torn between two lovers, basketball and track and field, but he suddenly knew what to do. Napagisip-isip ko na i-try, wala namang mawawala kung susubukan ko, said Bagsit. Tapos nakita ko yung sarili ko na nag-e-excel sa track and field kaya ito na. Bigla ko na siya nagustuhan kaysa basketball. Though Bagsit didnt fell for track and field the first time he laid eyes on the sport, he is convinced now that there is a second chance for everything and it is sometimes more powerful than the first encounter.

Love at second sight

Bagsit made his debut as a runner and not as a basketball player in the National Collegiate Athletic Association and took home a silver and

gold medal for Colegio de San Juan de Letran. In his last year in the league, he is very eager to add more to his all-in-all 17 NCAA medals and leave a legacy to the school. Though Bagsit was trained in jumping, he was determined to be flexible and in a matter of time, coaches found more talent in him that they never saw in any athletes. A 5th year Finance Marketing student, Bagsit has more to be proud of than his NCAA achievements because aside from representing Letran in various competitions he is also a member of the Philippine national team. Bagsit said his most unforgettable experience as a member of Team Pilipinas was during his debut in the 2011 SEA Games where he also brought honor to the country. Nanalo ako ng silver nun, he said Bagsit, who dreams of competing in the 2016 Rio de Janiero Olympics.
