QUESTION 1 a) A house is 40 ft long and 30 ft wide and has 8 ft height ceilings. Find the volume of the interior of the house in cubic meters and in cubic centimeters (1 ft = 0.3048 m). (4 marks) b) In a desperate attempt to come up with an equation to use during an examination, a student tries F = mv*/r, where F is a force, m is a mass, v is a velocity and r is a radius. Use dimensional analysis to determine whether this equation might be valid. (4 marks) c) A test car traveling at 70 km/h on the road at an angle of 18 North of East for 3.5 minutes to point A. The car then turns 24 to the North from its current position and travels for another 5.5 minutes to point B with a speed of 50 km/h. i) Sketch the motion of the test car. ii) Determine the distance of the test car from its starting position to point A. iii) Determine the distance of the test car from point A to point B. (6 marks) d) If 1.0 m3 of concrete weighs 6.0 x 104 N, determine the height of the tallest cylindrical concrete pillar that will not collapse under its own weight. The compression strength of concrete (the maximum pressure that can be exerted on the base of the structure) is 1.7x107Pa. (6 marks)

QUESTION 2 a) A student throws a set of keys vertically upward to her sister, who is in a window 4 m above. The keys are caught 1.5 s later by the sister's outstretched hand. i) Determine the initial velocity where the keys were thrown, ii) Calculate the velocity of the keys just before they were caught. (4 marks) b) Describe Newton's first law and give 2 example application of Newton's first law. (4 marks) c) An object of mass 45 kg is pulled with a rope up a plane inclined at 30 to the horizontal. The rope is parallel to the plane and the tension in it is 550 N. Determine the acceleration of the object; i) if the plane is smooth (no frictional force) ii) if the coefficient of kinetic friction between the object and the plane is 0.20 (6 marks) d) A student stands at the edge of a cliff and throws a stone horizontally over the edge with a speed of 18 m/s. The cliff is 50 m above a flat, horizontal beach. i) Find the time for the stone to strike the beach below the cliff, ii) Determine the speed when the stone just reach the beach. (6 marks)

Figure 1(a) a) A 0.5 kg bead slides on a curved wire, starting from rest at point A in Figure 1(a). If the wire is frictionless, find the speed of the bead ' i) at B ii) atC (6 marks) A frog in a hemispherical pod in Figure 1 (b) finds that he just floats without sinking in a fluid of density 1.5 g/cm3. If the pod has a radius of 6 cm and negligible mass, find the mass of the frog. (4 marks) /"'

Figure 1(b) c) The surface of the sun is approximately at 5700 K, and the temperature of earth's surface is approximately 290 K. Calculate the entropy change that occurs when 1000 J of energy is transferred by heat from the Sun to Earth. Identify if this is a reversible or irreversible process. (4 marks) An alert physics student stands beside the tracks as a train rolls slowly past. He notes that the frequency of the train whistle is 442 Hz when the train is approaching him and 441 Hz when the train is receding (moving away) from him. From this, determine the speed of the train. Speed of sound is 343 m/s. Given

Lake Erie contains roughly 4 x 1011 m3 of water. i) Determine the energy required to raise the temperature of that volume of water from 11C to 12C. Given Cwater = 4186 J/kg.C. (6 marks) ii) Calculate the time (in years) taken to supply this amount of energy by using the 1000 MW exhaust energy of an electric power plant. (4 marks) A steam pipe is covered with 1.5 cm thick insulating material of thermal conductivity 0.2 cal/cmCs. Calculate the amount of energy lost every second when the steam is at 200C and the surrounding air is at 20C? The pipe has a circumference of 800 cm and a length of 50.0 m. Neglect losses through the ends of the pipe. Given 4186J =
