Canyons School District Midvale Middle School Disclosure Statement 2012-2013 Instructor: Molly Kendall Course Objective: The

goal of this course is to improve students overall reading. Emphasis will be placed on fluency, word recognition, vocabulary, and comprehension strategies. MYP at Midvale Middle: Midvale Middle School is an International Baccalaureate World School. As a middle school we are implementing the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, MYP. We are excited about the opportunities the MYP offers our students. MYP helps students become critical thinkers, connects subject areas and allows students to apply their learning to the real world. Additional information about MYP can be found on the International Baccalaureate website www.ibo.org MYP units will be taught throughout this course. A course outline detailing the main concepts of each MYP unit can be found on my wikispace at http://kendall-mms.wikispaces.com/ MYP Grading Students will earn MYP grades in addition to their normal district letter grade. MYP grades are numerical and are based on criterion set by the International Baccalaureate. Students will be assessed on the MYP Language B criteria, which include: Criterion A Criterion B Criterion C Criterion D Oral Communication Visual Interpretation Reading Comprehension Writing Max Score 8 Max Score 8 Max Score 8 Max Score 8

Letter Grading Students letter grade will be based on the MYP criteria as follows: 40% of the grade will be based on formative assessments: homework, quizzes, assignments, etc. 60% of the grade will be based on summative assessments: tests and projects. * The percentages on the grade scale are adjusted to reflect mastery level learning while maintaining the traditional letter grade. Citizenship Citizenship will be based on the school citizenship rubric. Honorable citizenship is show by: - Always being in the right place at the right time. - Always showing respect in actions and communication. - Always having a positive attitude. - Always using your time to work. - Always doing your own work. - Always preparing to participate by bringing the things you teacher wants you to have in class. - Always actively participate in learning. Follow all school rules and teacher directions immediately. 2. Be in your seat with all required materials ready to learn before the bell rings. 3. Listen attentively and wait to speak at an appropriate time. 4. Every student has the right to learn uninterrupted. 5. You will conduct yourselves as ladies and gentlemen. Positive Consequences: 1. Attendance: Students will be considered tardy if they are not in their seats, prepared to work when the bell rings. They will be considered way late (absent) if they arrive more than 10 minutes late. Peer Grading: I will occasionally have students in the class correct the work of other students. This will be used as an educational tool that allows students to see learning from another perspective and review key concepts. Video Policy: We will occasionally watch video clips from movies that relate to our readings or topic of study. These videos may be rated G or PG. No videos with a PG-13 or R rating will be shown.
