1) MES391 Mechanical Engineering Laboratory I Experiment 1: Centrifugal Pump Objectives: To investigate actual performance of a centrifugal pump at various operating conditions (pressure, flow rate, speed) Equipments: A centrifugal pump (250 liter.min-1 at 15 meter head, 2900 rpm), a 2.5 kW variable speed motor. Also, the experimental set-up consists of a Storage tank, Foot valve, Suction pipe (2 inches, schedule 10, stainless steel pipe, inside diameter 54 mm., outside diameter 60.3 mm.), Centrifugal pump, Outlet Pressure gauge, Coupling, Spring scale, Torque arm (15 cm), BLUE WHITE F300 flow meter, Positive Displacement flow meter, Orifice flow meter (bore 35 mm.), Flow control valve (ball valve), Mercury Filled manometer, and Discharge Experiment 2: Temperature Measurement Objectives: To understand the basic principle of thermocouple. To find the relationship between temperature difference and the voltage output between the two junction of type K thermocouple. To find the error from temperature reading between mercury and digital thermometer. Equipments: Mercury thermometer, digital thermo meter and thermocouples

Experiment 3: Beam Deflection and Torsion Objectives: To study the parameters affecting deflections of beams Equipments: Beam deflection study unit: One venire caliper, One ruler, Specimens, Dial gage, Magnetic support, and 2.0 kg of load Experiment 4: Pneumatic System Objectives: To understand fundamental concept of energy transformation in fluid power system. Equipments: Pressure transducer, linear variable differential transformer (LVDT), 5/3 way proportional valve, quick exhaust valve, springs, double acting cylinder with piston diameter of 18.5 mm.

Experiment 5: Water Flow Measurement Objectives: To study various methods and devices for the measurement of the fluid flowrate in a pipe. To measure/determine the provided water flowrate in a pipe in the experimental tests with the use of different flow-measuring devices. To determine the discharge coefficients (used in the flow rate calculations) for the selected measuring devices and to compare them with those from reference sources. Equipments:

Water flow measurement experimental set-up which consists of flow measuring devices such as Orifice and Venturi meters, Rotameter, Turbine Meter.

Experiment 6: Marcet Boiler Objectives: To investigate the relationship between the pressure and temperature of saturated steam, in equilibrium with water, at all pressure between atmospheric and 4 bar. Equipments:

Marcet Boiler comprises a fabricated steel boiler shell fitted with high pressure electric immersion heater and furnished with safety valve, pressure gauge, thermocouple and pressure transducer. Experiment 7: Water Turbine Objectives: To examine the dynamic characteristics of an impulse turbine Equipments: A Pelton wheel turbine

Figure 5: Water turbine experimental set-up Experiment 8: Steam Engine Objectives: To investigate the performance characteristics of a steam engine Equipments: Boiler (0-9 bar), water pump, water tank, power supply (includes voltage and current indicators), flywheel, temperature indicator (0-800 0C) and pressure gauges.

Figure 6: The experimental set-up for Steam Engine Experiment 9: Friction Loss in Pipes Objectives: To study the flow characteristics of liquid in pipeline, To study the energy losses due to friction in pipe, fittings, valves, and other devices, To measure the flow rate by using orifice and venturi, and To determine coefficients of discharge (Cd) of orifice and venturi. Equipments: Water flow measurement unit Experiment 10: Pressure Measurement Objectives: To be aware and familiarized with various pressure measuring equipments Equipments: Various kinds of manometers such as Piezometer Tube, U-Tube Manometer, Inclined-tube manometer, and Mechanical and Electronic Pressure Measuring Devices

2) MES392 Mechanical Engineering Laboratory II Experiment 1: Solar Water Heater Objectives: To determine experimentally the thermal performance of a simple solar water heater. To formulate an approximate mathematical model for the system. To simulate the system with the mathematical model. To compare the results obtained experimentally and the theoretically. Equipments: The solar water heater consists of one 2.16 m2 collector facing south with a tilt angle of 15, and a storage tank of 150 litre capacity placed horizontally, shown in Figure 12. The total solar radiation incident on the collector surface is recorded by a pyranometer integrated tilted at the same angle. A thermocouple sensor measuring the ambient temperature is also provided.

The major equipment used for this experiment are: - cooling tower unit (induced-draft counterflow cooling tower) - temperature and relative humidity probe, and - anemometer The experimental set-up for the cooling tower is shown in Figure 13.

Figure 13: Experimental set-up for the cooling tower Experiment 3: Air Conditioning System Objectives: To study the performance of air conditioning system and psychrometry. Equipments: Wet-bulb and dry-bulb thermometers, vapor-compression refrigeration system, electric heaters and electric fan.

Experiment 5: Refrigeration Cycles Objectives: To investigate the actual performance of a refrigeration cycle at an operating condition Equipments: The experimental refrigerator consists of a compressor, a water cooled condenser, a filter/drier, a flow meter, an expansion valve and an electric heated evaporator. Experiment 6: Boiling Heat Transfer Objectives: To investigate the phenomena of convective, nucleate and film boiling. To find the heat transfer coefficient of three modes of boiling. Equipments: The unit consists of strong glass cylinder containing the liquid and saturated vapor of R-141b (1,1-dichorlofluoro-ethane). There is an electrical heater of surface area 1.3x10-3 m2 immersed in the liquid, and a water cooled condenser of surface area 0.032 m2 in the vapor. A mercury-in-glass thermometer is used to measure the liquid temperature while a Bourdon gauge is used to measure the pressure of the vapor. A rotameter and valve are also used to measure and control the rate of flow of cooling water through the condenser. Experiment 7: Cross Flow Heat Exchanger Objectives: To study heat transfer to flow of fluid past a single circular cylinder To determine the temperature profiles for the cylinder being cooled under various flow conditions To obtain the relationship between the Nusselt number and Renolds number and compare the empirically determined constants with ones from references.

To apply the data acquisition system in modeling and controlling a simple process. Equipments: 1. Computer 2. Data acquisition card 3. Thermocouple type K 4. Spot light 5. Miscellaneous apparatus: a DC power supplier, a solid state relay, etc. Experiment 9: Dynamic Balance Objectives: To demonstrate unbalance of a rotating machine part To balance an unbalanced rotating machine part by using dynamic balancing condition.
