We were sorry to have to say goodbye to Brent on
August 22 at the Kootenay Lake Hospital. Brent
was 53 years old and fought a long, courageous
battle with pancreatic cancer, which surfaced when
he was overseas working in Mongolia. Brents
life was fullled with adventure, family, friends,
laughter and travel. We will miss him and hold all his amazing stories,
pictures, souvenirs and knowledge in our hearts. Left behind are his
children Kristopher, Jessica Jade and Adam Shaundell; grandchildren
Layna Shaundell and Tristan Jack; mom and dad Isabel and Michael
Slobodian; siblings Gayle, Daryl and Calvin Slobodian; along with many
more friends and family members.

Bears, Bears, Bears!!
Small black bear entering Kaslo homes! Tere have been
two such incidences in the past week of a small black bear
entering the open doors of homes in daylight hours in up-
per Kaslo. While this bear is/has not been acting aggres-
sively towards people in any way, bears entering homes
obviously puts both people and the bear at risk. It is likely
that this bear has been frequenting Kaslo
neighbourhoods since spring when s/
he was dispersed from its mother. Te
huckleberry crop is scarce this year, and
with so much food available in town, why
would the bear leave?
When bears continue to fnd food
near people they can be termed food
conditioned. When bears learn that be-
ing around people may have little or no
negative consequence, the bear can be
termed habituated. Tere are at least four
diferent food conditioned and habitu-
ated black bears frequenting Kaslo neigh-
bourhoods and feeding on garbage, fruit,
compost, pet food, and other attractants
in daylight hours. All of these foods are
common anthropogenic sources of cal-
ories for bears as they try to fatten up for
their winter hibernation.
As fruit season has started, our local
fruit tree project is getting under way. Do
you have too much fruit? Would you like
to harvest free delicious fruit for your own
use? Reduce the amount of unmanaged
fruit in Kaslo and area by contacting Feed-
ing Families, Not Bears at 250-353-1137.
Be Bear Smart and dont feed bears near
your home! Dont allow bears to become
food conditioned; even if a bear is small
and alone, you are not doing it any fa-
vours to allow it to feed near you. Food
conditioned bears are ofen shot as a re-
sult of human carelessness as they pose a
potential safety risk to people. For more
