Executive Summary:

This report has been prepared under the subject research methodology and design, for the fulfillment of the requirement for the MBA degree. This research is a problem finding research. This research is conducted to find out the best medium to teach the students. The research is based on questionnaire distributed to people belonging to Ace Institute of Management. The study period taken for the research is 3 months. The report is based on the sample of 30 respondents.

This survey will be useful for the students as they will be able to express their satisfaction /dissatisfaction. This survey will be beneficial for the college as well, as it will be able to improve its students learning capacity. From the research I came to know that there is not any single best medium to teach. Media to be chosen depends upon whether the subjects are numerical or theoretical. I found that whiteboard is best when teacher are dealing with numerical subjects like account and finance and for theoretical subjects power point is good .

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION OF THE STUDY

1.1 Background of the report
This project was assigned by the Pokhara University as a partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of Master of Business Administration under the subject Business Research Methodology. The research topic carried out which is the best method of teaching that is either through the help of power point or whiteboard. The reason behind choosing this research topic is to find out whether student learning is affected by teaching method of PowerPoint and whiteboard. For that, I have conducted the research through structured questionnaire and one experiment with people inside Ace Institute of Management.

1.2 Rational
This survey will be beneficial for the college, since by this survey they will know to what extent the students learning at ace are being affected by the use of PowerPoint and whiteboard. They will get an understanding as to how students are facing the problem due to of bad selection of media by the teachers. The college will be able to see where the teachers are doing well, and also to determine where the teachers are lacking and needs improvement. This will further help the college to produce more talented students in the future. This survey will be useful for the students as well, as they will be able to express their satisfaction /dissatisfaction to the management as well as suggest ways for dealing with the problem in hand. This will be presented to Management of the college. Hence they can expect improvement for the days to come and a solution for the problem.

11

1.3 Objective of the study

For the partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree of MBA To find out the extent to which power point and whiteboard has been affecting the students learning capacity.

To find out the probable solutions to the existing problem. To provide aid for conducting further through research. To find out the students preferences.

1.4 Limitations
The sample population is very large but sample size taken is small. As the questionnaire consisted of very few Yes/No questions, not much of analysis part consists of tables, bars, and charts. Most of the respondents have filled the answer carelessely. They have given indifferent answers to the questions.

12

1.5 Methodology
The questionnaire will be given to students of ace morning MBA personally by the investigator. The sample of 30 students will be chosen through simple random sampling design, where each of 30 individuals will have equal chance of being selected for the study. This will insure accuracy and precision of result. The questionnaire will be personally explained by the investigator to the sample on any topic they do not understand, so that no communication gap will be created. This would thus avoid misleading conclusion due to communication gap while collecting the information

1.6 Literature review

The report is on the best method of teaching at Ace institute of Management and basically being a primary research, not much secondary data will be collected. However insights are collected from internet on the related topics consists of:

Chapter 2: INTRODUCTION
PowerPoint and Whiteboard PowerPoint is good ways to effectively get across short bullet points of information. They're good base points for a presentation to remind you of what you need to say. They look good visually; can be easily read if you have a big enough projector. If you used leaflets in a presentation you'd be wasting paper and ink, PowerPoint, although they use electricity are more of an environmentally friendly way of presenting things. Also, they're useful because you can add sound and videos to them which will captivate the viewers attention. Plus, they're quick to make and you have as much information on them as you want because you can add lots of slides. They're convenient and easy to transport because you can put them onto a memory stick and then onto your chosen computer. PowerPoint is a quick way to make your presentation. You can have your information in note form on the slides, so it is easier for viewers to read it out in full sentences. You can add pictures/animations/slide transitions to make it more interesting and keep the audience's attention. It can be attached to an email and sent to any other computer in the world (or to your teacher) It can be made to suit your audience by changing the slide background/font. PowerPoint and similar slide show presentation programs provide an effective approach to both student work and classroom instruction. Using PowerPoint and slide shows to teach offers benefits, as well. Technology surrounds students. Its advantages are; Interaction and Engagement PowerPoint and slide presentations hold student attention through the use of video, graphics and music. Because students today are so technologically advanced, tools that involve technology such as slide shows increase student involvement and interaction.

14

Ability to Capitalize on Modern Media The Internet provides current events coverage and the latest information on an enormous number of topics. Slide show tools allow us to incorporate text, video, audio and photos from the Internet easily, allowing teacher to share the most recent information using media that engage students. Integration of Multiple Sources Using PowerPoint and slide shows, teacher can integrate multiple sources in classroom presentations. For example, teacher easily can incorporate photos of student work, video from a field trip, related content from news sources and the latest expert research into a single presentation. Availability of Instruction Rather than handing absentee students written notes of a lesson they missed, teacher can reply lesson or presentation using a slide show. Absent students receive the same instruction as those who are present, so they do not fall behind. Cooperation and Collaboration Teachers can share lessons and presentations simply using a file-sharing system or flash drive. Teachers can share the workload of creating presentations.

Microsoft's PowerPoint program, which is bundled with any MS Office suite, has emerged as one of the most dynamic presentation tools in today's Information Age. Today, PowerPoint presentations in many forms, styles and custom layouts are used by working professionals, academicians, students, medical practitioners, politicos and others to showcase material, information and data. Slide shows and complex presentations comprising of text, images,3-D graphics audio clips, sound effects and flashy animations are used creatively to enliven discussions, add value to lectures, make compelling speeches and enrich studies and reports. Its another advantages are:
15

Flexibility and Customization Introduction of newer tools, custom templates and the ability to be used in many platforms makes PowerPoint a flexible and highly customizable tool. User ingenuity can be meshed with these flexibility and customization characteristics to present information and material to suit specific needs and audiences. Summarize Detailed Reports PowerPoint presentations capture the essence and summarize key points of highly detailed reports, surveys and studies on any subject or domain. Slides with statistical highlights and important facts are also used to present critical information. Educational Value PowerPoint presentations are used by professors and teachers to add value to their lectures and notes. Students use PowerPoint slides and presentations to enrich their assignments, projects and other coursework submissions. Sales Presentations Sales professionals regularly use compelling PowerPoint presentations comprising of data and informative content to inform, educate and enthuse different user audiences about products and services. Effective Visual Tool The visual imagery made possible by juggling various PowerPoint combinations, design templates and other tools is used by speakers to add value to speeches and presentations and engage audiences via projector screens during conferences, seminars and symposiums.

PowerPoint has emerged as one of the most popular tools of choice for giving presentations. Microsoft has developed this application with ease of use in mind; there are templates and tools right at your fingertips to help you construct the perfect accompaniment to your presentation. Granted most people turn to Microsoft products as a familiar friend, but there are many other reasons to integrate PowerPoint with your talk. There are many advantages and disadvantages to using PowerPoint. People love visuals because it helps them put an image to an idea. If you are standing in front of an audience describing your innovative thoughts, showing a picture or photo with the highlighted points helps get your point across and your listeners are likely to sit up and
18

take notice. Long speeches tend to become boring and people tune out, but when utilizing a tool such as PowerPoint, you can effectively capture your audience's attention if done properly. In todays busy world people don't like to get caught up in detail and PowerPoint gives an effectual means to get your ideas across. Slides should be designed in such a way where they are catchy and provide key phrases which will keep listeners attuned and focused on bulleted and the most important points. PowerPoint provides a terrific way to make your presentation memorable if properly used as an enhancement to augment your ideas. The tools provided within the PowerPoint application are very user friendly and easy to follow step-by-step; even the novice user can sit down and effectively learn how to navigate this program with the helpful templates and tips offered within the program. The application provides you with a variety of layouts to choose from and it's easy to select what kinds of features you want to integrate into your slides which help you create an expert looking slideshow. Adding some pictures and graphical representations add charm and helps personalize your presentation. These are some terrific enhancements and benefits in applying PowerPoint to your discussion.

The Disadvantages and Advantages of Using Whiteboards This is commonly known as a white board marker partner to a whiteboard a white, even surface used for temporary markings that is specially designed for non-permanent marker. It starts from a chalk board and then later on it becomes White boards both functions are similar. At early eighties whiteboards become more popular than any other boards. Even its application become more suitable to some institutions, offices, meeting halls, places of education and other similar environments because of its credibility and usefulness. The whiteboard appeared just when the airborne particles from the chalks began to raise concerns in peoples minds. It was in those times computers were beginning to be introduced into classrooms and the airborne particles from chalks posed the threat of greatly damaging the chips of the computer. Moreover, chalks also render the surrounding air quality to be very poor, especially for the children. All these factors influenced the replacement of chalkboards with whiteboards on a large scale.

19

The benefits of a whiteboards over chalkboards: 1. The most significant advantage of whiteboards over chalkboards is that the whiteboard markers do not generate dust like chalks. 2. The board is comparatively cleaner, and provides for a clearer presentation. 3. The availability of many colors of markers allows for an engaging visual presentation. 4. Whiteboards with non-reflective surfaces can also be used for LCD projection. 5. The marker is easier to hold and handle. 6. The markings are also not affected by external factors. Whiteboards have become a very popular way of communicating with people, especially in the workplace. There are many advantages to using one, especially when you compare them to chalkboards and paper. Here are five distinct advantages to using a whiteboard.
1. Less mess, less dust. Chalkboards are very popular in schools and they've even been used

in professional settings. However, chalk can be a very messy medium to work with because it produces a lot of dust. This dust has the tendency to get all over the place and it can be hazardous to people with breathing problems and/or allergies. Using a whiteboard eliminates the mess so they're great for use in which dust would cause problems.
2. Dry-erase makers are easy to use. In addition to being messy, chalk can be difficult for

some people to hold. You can't hold it like a pen and usually, smaller pieces are easier to write with because the longer ones break easily. A person who has arthritis may find chalk extremely difficult to grasp, as well as people with larger fingers. Dry-erase markers are much more comfortable to hold because you can hold them like you would a ballpoint pen. This can reduce fatigue and making writing on the board much easier.
3. You can use it as a bulletin board. A porcelain board has a magnetic surface, so it can be

used as a magnetic bulletin board. This allows you to pin up important documents, as well as any papers you may working from, such as class or meeting notes.
4. You can project on to it. Another advantage to using a whiteboard is that it can be used as

a projection screen for slide shows, PowerPoint presentations, overhead projections, and

20

even movies. The white surface is perfect for projecting images on to, which means you won't need to purchase a screen for your presentations.
5. It will help you save paper. If you've been using an easel with a big pad of paper on it for

meetings and presentations, you're no doubt ending up with a bunch of paper that needs to be either thrown away or recycled. Using a whiteboard will eliminate the need for all that paper which is much better for the environment.

If there is an advantage of Whiteboards then there is only a set of disadvantages: 1. Pick the right markers to use on whiteboards. It has to be dry wipe type of markers since there are some that is not appropriate to use. 2. Boards with low quality can leave ghosting effects that can be bothersome for the future markings on the board. 3. Too much glossiness in the surface can be a problem to those who have poor visibility. 4. to those who have vision problems a white background can cause them difficulty in viewing the content. 5. Whiteboards are more costly than black boards. Although whiteboards have disadvantages, their advantages outshine all the downsides. Whiteboards are invariably employed in various places starting from small kitchens in homes to huge meeting halls of companies. They provide the utmost comfort, excellent visual presentation, and do not generate dust. The maintenance of whiteboards is also easy. Use only standard dry-erase markers on the whiteboard. Permanent markers should be avoided under any condition. After every use the board must be erased. If the board is used every day, it has to be cleaned at least 3 times a week. The markings must not be erased immediately, while still damp, as this may smudge and cause ghosting effect. The cleaner must be non-abrasive (glass cleaner).

Interpretation:

Quiz one and two had been taken after being taught through powerpoint while quiz 3 had taken after being taught through whiteboard. There was no significant changes found in the results of students after being taught through both the forms of teaching. So we can come to the conclusion that both methods of teaching are eualyy powerful and significant.

Findings from open ended questions The other factors that have been found from the questionnaire are: 1. Visuals make the learning more interesting. 2. PowerPoint is time effective. Teacher can spend remaining time for important analysis. 3. Most of the respondents prefer to use whiteboard when studying numerical subjects. 4. They consider whiteboard as source of spoiling time because teacher has to write everything. 5. Many of the respondents consider PowerPoint as standard medium because it saves time and contents of PowerPoint are portable.
6. Some student do not think PowerPoint is a standard medium of teaching as it is not

applicable for all course.

41

7. Main advantage of whiteboard is that student should have to give utmost attention. This is because content couldnt portable and when student miss to listen they could not understand the remaining portion. 8. A main drawback of whiteboard is that some teachers handwriting is very complex to understand.
9. Some did not like whiteboard since it does not have visuals and due to of its

manuallness.

CHAPTER 6: DISCUSSION
The research was conducted to find out student learning capacity. For this I have chosen two independent variables that are PowerPoint and whiteboard. Beforehand I had assumed that power point was the best medium to deliver the courses. The assumption that we had came wrong after having completed the research. Many of the students still prefer whiteboard. Whiteboard has its own importance. From the research it is evident that PowerPoint is better medium while teaching theoretical subjects and whiteboard is better while teachers are giving lectures on mathematical subjects like account, finance. Form the study we found out that the number of teacher using whiteboard is greater than the number of teacher using power point. From this survey we can conclude that popularity of whiteboard is not decreasing. The main reason behind the students preference of whiteboard is the fact that teachers can write anything to make things understand better and it is very easy to understand mathematical problem this way. On the contrary there are those who prefer learning form Power point. It has been found that learning through visuals makes learning more interesting while at the same time teachers can spend the remaining time for important analysis and explanation of the topic and contents of PowerPoint are portable. Another reason for students preference of learning from Power point is due to the fact that sometimes the teachers handwriting is very complex to understand thus hampering the students learning. It is also beneficial for the students in the sense that rather than handing absentee students written notes of a lesson they missed, teacher can reply lesson or presentation using a slide show. Absent students receive the same instruction as those who are present, so they do not

fall behind. PowerPoint presentations capture the essence and summarize key points of highly detailed reports, surveys and studies on any subject or domain. Slides with statistical highlights and important facts are also used to present critical information. Slide show tools allow us to incorporate text, video, audio and photos from the Internet easily, allowing teacher to share the most recent information using media that engage students. So all in all we can say that both white board and power point are effective tools of teaching in itself. Both of them have their advantages and disadvantages.

Chapter 7: Conclusion and Recommendation

From the finding and interpretations we can conclude that students prefer both white board and power point as effective tools of teaching. From the research we found out that PowerPoint is a better medium while teaching theoretical subjects while whiteboard effective while teachers are giving lectures on mathematical subjects. There are pros and cons of both these methods of teaching. What might be good for one may not be good for the other. Learning through visuals makes learning more interesting. On the contrary while teaching through whiteboards teachers can write the necessary steps to make things understand better and it is very easy to understand mathematical problem this way. My one and only recommendation for the management is that Faculties should requested to use necessary medium as demand by the subjects and students. .
