Introduction
Craft Based design project is a subject which involves the study of various crafts of India and designing new products with them, the craft chosen by us was Channapatna, in Channapatna we find lathe turned products and Lac products. We designed simple products and Firstly made mockups of them and then went to Channapatna to get the products made by artisans so that who ever sees it can say it is from Channapatna

Candle Stand

Candle stand was one of the product chosen by me by basic idea was to make simple product so I started working on simple lathe turned designs and selected few of them and started working on them. After selecting the form suitable for the candle stand we started with balancing the whole shape of the stand and took it forward to the final shape and then started with the mock up process.

Step 1
The first step was to find a waste wood. I found the wood but it was a big log with lots of cracks and hole and nails so I selected a good portion of it and cut it with the help of a Rib-saw.

Step 2
The second step was to place that wood in the lathe machine by marling centre of the face.

Step 3
Then I decided to finally make the mock up firstly made the wood round then marked the design segments and made different curves with various tools

Step 4
When all the segments were made, removed the wood from machine and made the base flat and drilled the top portion for keeping the candle.

Prototyping Candle Stand

Step 1
The first step during the process was to select the perfect size wood that has a perfect width according to the shape of the design.

Step 2
The way of making the wood round was different than ours and was done before placing the wood in the lathe machine

Step 3
Then the artisan started making the product in different pieces as he said it is not possible to make all the parts together as the machine they have supports the wood only on one side.

Step 4
The final step was to apply Lac and assemble all the pieces

Ring Packaging

After finalizing the form for Ring Packaging I started giving the final touch up to it and gave all the required dimensions to it. The next decision was to decide where to give the cavity for keeping the ring. After deciding all the things we moved towards making the mock up of the design to see how it looks and se weather the concept works or not.

Step 1

After making the desired shape with the wood I took out the wood from the machine and cut it using the Rib-saw from the place, which was decided in the design to give the cavity and then made the cavity using drilling machine.

Then the artisan started making the product firstly he made the upper portion and then he made the down portion

Step 4
The final step was to apply Lac and see weather both the portions joins together tightly an then did the final finishing.
