Teutopolis motocross racer Mette a rising star on national amateur circuit

Allan Lewis News Report Staff When Katie Mette of Teutopolis was 16 years old, she and her brother convinced their parents Dick and Pauline to buy them a stock four-wheeler to race around the countryside. At the time, it may have seemed like a frivolous purchase, something to give their red-headed daughter, now 19, something to do on the weekends. Pauline never imagined Katie would become a rising star in the world of professional motocross, but that is where she finds herself today. If she told me I was going to be a motocross racer parent three years ago, I would have said no way, Pauline said. Before owning her very own Honda four-wheeler Katie raced through the rural woods of Teutopolis with her brother and cousins, who had been racing dirt bikes for some time. Being from out kind of in the country we had all kinds of places to ride growing up, Katie said. I grew up riding and trail riding with my brother around the house and eventually we went to racetracks. She just had a stock four-wheeler and her and her brother did extremely well, Pauline said. She kept saying can we go again? And thats how they Katie Mette, 19, of Teutopolis poses with her ATV during a race weekend this season. got started. hers, is fun, though competitive with a few naturally good-hearted remarks here and there. Theres a little bit of a friendly rivalry between each other when we are racing but we keep it on the track, Katie said. All of us have become really good friends. Katies parents are just as thrilled as she is about her success. Sometimes, parental instinct makes it a little hard to bear, though. In the entire time she has been racing I can count on one hand the number of times I have missed a race, Pauline said. Its a dangerous sport so we always feel like we need to be there when she is racing. There can be almost anywhere. The 10-race tour stops in Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and even Maryland. Katies favorite track to race on tour happens to be in Buchanan Mich., home to the Red Bud National held in July. Katie finished this years race in sixth and finished fourth in 4-stroke-B and 3rd on this years womens circuit. The series concluded in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. on Aug. 12. The track in Michigan is really fun to ride and the last one in Tennessee is always a really big race just because its the finale and everyone stays at the campground down there. Katie, who is currently studying at Lake Land College couldnt do it without the help of her parents. After all, at 16, she wasnt going to be able to buy that ATV by herself. They are a huge help and I wouldnt have been able to do it without them. They have supported it since we first did it and are my number one support system and fans, Katie said. They sacrifice a lot to get me to all the races METTE/B2

Hearts penalized, stalled in loss to Paxton

Effingham had its opportunities in the Hearts first ever visit to Paxton Buckley-Loda, but the home standing Panthers prevailed to drop EHS to 0-2 on the season. Effingham found itself going in the wrong direction on offense Friday, accumulating 90 penalty yards in the 30-22 defeat. We were close. We were close a lot of times, coach Mike McDonald said. Effingham closed in on the Panthers, and cut their lead to 23-14 before allowing a score to fall behind 30-14. The Hearts put together a late scoring drive and connected on a two point conversion to trail by just a score at 30-22, but could not put together another score despite a number of large plays late. The offense stalled in the second and third quarters, and McDonald said there are issues which need addressed before Fridays game at Centralia. We thought we had some momentum after stopping them right before halftime but just couldnt put anything together, McDonald said. We didnt have great field position and will have to go back and look at film to see what the problem is. We did some things early and some things late but when you look at those middle quarters we just stalled a lot. Quarterback Nathan Vail improved upon his week one performance but still had a tough time finding his targets, connecting on five of his 23 passing attempts for 144 yards and one touchdown, a 75 yard pass to Logan Howell in the second quarter. Howell scampered in for two touchdowns, while Vail ran for 107 yards on 28 carries. Defensively, McDonald said the Hearts had trouble adjusting to a complex Paxton offense, and the inexperience of the defensive unit perhaps played a part in the mistakes his team was making. Theyre good athletes but again varsity football is a little different story, McDonald said. There are some mental mistakes and some frustration and it turned into physical mistakes. touchdown in Fridays game at Paxton Buckley-Loda.

The Teutopolis volleyball team picked up its first win of the season but lost four games in the Casey-Westfield Tournament. In the match against Heritage, Natalie Summers collected a team-leading six kills and eight digs while adding two aces and two kills. Natalie Summers, Anna Grimes and Julie Wente and Katelyn Ruholl each had two kills and Ruholl dished out 12 assists. Summers had four kills in the matches against Casey-Westfield and Fairfield. Bulldogs good enough for a win

Allan Lewis News Report Staff Playing as guests on the scoreboard in their own ballpark, the St. Anthony Bulldogs were reminded they were the home team by Queens familiar tune We are the Champions playing on the PA system at Evergreen Hollow Park. The reigning Class IA state champions were not quite themselves Tuesday afternoon, but did enough to get past Beecher City 4-2 in fall baseball action. Coach Kenny Miller wasnt too happy with his team, but will take the win. We didnt hit the ball really well and our pitching and defense was okay, Miller said. Four runs is not going to win you a lot of games. St. Anthony jumped out to an early lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Jacob Lorenz and an RBI single by Eli Dasenbrock. The Bulldogs added a third run in the second when Nick Gardewine raced home from third on a wild pitch to the backstop after he stole second and reached third on a balk following a walk to start the frame. St. Anthony starter Alex Hoelscher ran into problems in the bottom of the fourth as the Eagles rallied with the bases empty and two outs following a double play to load the bases. Hoelscher hit the No. 8 batter in the Beecher City lineup in the helmet with an offspeed pitch to bring in a run and irritate his coach. With the number eight guy you just assume throw him a fastball and blow it by him, but thats not what happens and thats what happens when kids think for themselves, Miller said. He

threw good for the most part but the way he gave up the run was aggravating. After allowing a second run in the fifth, St. Anthony played for one in the seventh, when Dasenbrock laid down a perfect squeeze bunt scoring Lorenz from third. Dasenbrock advanced to second base on an arrant throw from the third baseman, but was stranded at third following two groundouts to the shortstop. Were good at that [bunting] and that was a spot for it, Miller said. Ben Hecht came in and pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the game with a save. At 6-0 to start the fall, St. Anthony has allowed just three runs. Our top four have all thrown pretty well, Miller said. Im not saying we have played the 27 Yanks or anything, but we have kept things to a minimum.

T-Town scores 11 runs in the third, tops Mulberry Grove in five innings
Allan Lewis News Report Staff Teutopolis spotted Mulberry Grove two runs early, but exploded for 11 runs in the third inning to power its way to a 13-2 baseball win Thursday. The Wooden Shoes overcame a shaky performance from starting pitcher Will Beck, who had five walks and walked in a run with the bases loaded in the first inning. Beck struck out four and allowed two earned runs in his short start. Coach Justin Fleener said Beck needs a little more mound work in the fall, and while he has been struggling stressed the season is young. I need to do a better job getting him some mound work and having him ready to go and get better in practice, Fleener said. The walks were going both ways though, and Aces starter Jesse Sloan ran into similar problems, although his mistakes were much more costly. Sloan labored his way through the third inning and tossed 93 pitches with little help from his defense. He walked six batters and allowed seven hits and 11 runs, nine earned in the

inning. The top of the Teutopolis order was strong at the plate, with the top three hitters in the order accounting for five RBIs. Jared Waldhoff was 1-2 with an RBI and one run scored, while Derek Smith was 1-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Alex Goldstein had a two-run double and scored one run. Goldstein and Smith have been pacing the Wooden Shoes offense thus far in the fall. Goldstein is hitting .467 and Smith is carrying a .462 average. Alex Goldstein is hitting the ball really well and him and Smith are kind of leading us right now, Fleener said. We have some other guys who are coming around and hitting in the .300s as well. The cushion provided by the big inning and the lower implications of the fall season allowed Fleener to give 15 different players at bats and nine Wooden Shoes had at least one hit in the ballgame. [The fall] gives us a lot of different combinations and the opportunity to see what we are going to work on, Fleener said. John Ungrund earned the win for Teutopolis, closing out the final 3.1 innings of the five inning contest. He walked three including a hit batsman, but held Mulberry Grove hitless and struck out eight while throwing 38 of his 69 pitches for strikes. Sloan was the offensive leader for Mulberry Grove, collecting an RBI double in the first. Teutopolis finally gets Greenvilles number at home

Allan Lewis News Report Staff Jordan Niebrugge scored twice and the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes broke through for a rare soccer victory against Greenville to improve to 4-1 on the season. Teutopolis coach Dustin Jansen said the Comets have given Teutopolis fits in the past, both recently and in his playing days. We have got our tails whipped the past two years by Greenville. Last year they absolutely gave us an onslaught. Two years ago, same thing, Jansen said. Usually every year this is a bad night for me but coming away with a 2-1 win against Greenville is huge. A win against Greenville will go a long way. Fifteen years ago when I was playing soccer Greenville was the team to beat, Jansen said. They have always had a good program over there and have a good college program over there [at NCAA Division III Greenville College] so we come home tonight with a huge victory. I am really proud of the guys. The Wooden Shoes controlled possession for a majority of the first half, and the Comets were off the mark when they managed to get past the Teutopolis back-line into the offensive third of the field. Niebrugge put away the first goal of the game 7:14 in, taking advantage of a corner kick one-touching a pass from Ryan Westendorf into the far corner of the net. With 11:21 remaining, Niebrugge found the score sheet again, as he got his foot on a long throw in by Kyle Blievernicht and struck a low shot on the diving keeper who held onto it just inches inside the goal-line thinking he had made a save. Niebrugge, along with Westendorf and Blievernicht, have paced the Shoes offensively through the early portion of the season. Niebrugge scored a hat trick in a game against Charleston last week. Jansen said Niebrugges knack for scoring is a testament Jordan Niebrugge led Teutopolis to a 2-1 win over Greenville last week. He scored both of the Shoes two goals. to those around him. Even though the 2012 season is complete, Katie has her eyes set on March, and the beginning of a fresh start as the 2013 circuit kicks off in Washington, Georgia. From now until it gets cold Ill still be riding in some local races until October and then tear the ATV down to the frame and replace everything new and build them back up, Katie said. Ill start trying to go down south to ride in February and in March the national series picks back up.
