Allan Lewis News Report Staff When Katie Mette of Teutopolis was 16 years old, she and her brother convinced their parents Dick and Pauline to buy them a stock four-wheeler to race around the countryside. At the time, it may have seemed like a frivolous purchase, something to give their red-headed daughter, now 19, something to do on the weekends. Pauline never imagined Katie would become a rising star in the world of professional motocross, but that is where she finds herself today. If she told me I was going to be a motocross racer parent three years ago, I would have said no way, Pauline said. Before owning her very own Honda four-wheeler Katie raced through the rural woods of Teutopolis with her brother and cousins, who had been racing dirt bikes for some time. Being from out kind of in the country we had all kinds of places to ride growing up, Katie said. I grew up riding and trail riding with my brother around the house and eventually we went to racetracks. She just had a stock four-wheeler and her and her brother did extremely well, Pauline said. She kept saying can we go again? And thats how they Katie Mette, 19, of Teutopolis poses with her ATV during a race weekend this season. got started. hers, is fun, though competitive with a few naturally good-hearted remarks here and there. Theres a little bit of a friendly rivalry between each other when we are racing but we keep it on the track, Katie said. All of us have become really good friends. Katies parents are just as thrilled as she is about her success. Sometimes, parental instinct makes it a little hard to bear, though. In the entire time she has been racing I can count on one hand the number of times I have missed a race, Pauline said. Its a dangerous sport so we always feel like we need to be there when she is racing. There can be almost anywhere. The 10-race tour stops in Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and even Maryland. Katies favorite track to race on tour happens to be in Buchanan Mich., home to the Red Bud National held in July. Katie finished this years race in sixth and finished fourth in 4-stroke-B and 3rd on this years womens circuit. The series concluded in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. on Aug. 12. The track in Michigan is really fun to ride and the last one in Tennessee is always a really big race just because its the finale and everyone stays at the campground down there. Katie, who is currently studying at Lake Land College couldnt do it without the help of her parents. After all, at 16, she wasnt going to be able to buy that ATV by herself. They are a huge help and I wouldnt have been able to do it without them. They have supported it since we first did it and are my number one support system and fans, Katie said. They sacrifice a lot to get me to all the races METTE/B2

The Teutopolis volleyball team picked up its first win of the season but lost four games in the Casey-Westfield Tournament. Teutopolis defeated Heritage 25-23, 25-18 in its third game of the weekend, but lost matches to Casey-Westfield (25-20, 25-9), Fairfield (25-14, 25-21), Hartsburg-Emden (25-20, 25-21) and Cisne (25-13, 25-23), The win was enough to earn Teutopolis an eighth place finish in the 12-team tournament. In the match against Heritage, Natalie Summers collected a team-leading six kills and eight digs while adding two aces and two kills. Natalie Summers, Anna Grimes and Julie Wente and Katelyn Ruholl each had two kills and Ruholl dished out 12 assists. Summers had four kills in the matches against Casey-Westfield and Fairfield. Teutopolis took the floor again Tuesday at Sullivan.
St. Anthony pitcher Alex Hoelscher struck out four for the Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon at Evergreen Hollow Park. Despite allowing a fall season-high two runs, St. Anthony had just enough offense to improve to 6-0.
threw good for the most part but the way he gave up the run was aggravating. After allowing a second run in the fifth, St. Anthony played for one in the seventh, when Dasenbrock laid down a perfect squeeze bunt scoring Lorenz from third. Dasenbrock advanced to second base on an arrant throw from the third baseman, but was stranded at third following two groundouts to the shortstop. Were good at that [bunting] and that was a spot for it, Miller said. Ben Hecht came in and pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the game with a save. At 6-0 to start the fall, St. Anthony has allowed just three runs. Our top four have all thrown pretty well, Miller said. Im not saying we have played the 27 Yanks or anything, but we have kept things to a minimum.

T-Town scores 11 runs in the third, tops Mulberry Grove in five innings
Allan Lewis News Report Staff Teutopolis spotted Mulberry Grove two runs early, but exploded for 11 runs in the third inning to power its way to a 13-2 baseball win Thursday. The Wooden Shoes overcame a shaky performance from starting pitcher Will Beck, who had five walks and walked in a run with the bases loaded in the first inning. Beck struck out four and allowed two earned runs in his short start. Coach Justin Fleener said Beck needs a little more mound work in the fall, and while he has been struggling stressed the season is young. I need to do a better job getting him some mound work and having him ready to go and get better in practice, Fleener said. The walks were going both ways though, and Aces starter Jesse Sloan ran into similar problems, although his mistakes were much more costly. Sloan labored his way through the third inning and tossed 93 pitches with little help from his defense. He walked six batters and allowed seven hits and 11 runs, nine earned in the

inning. The top of the Teutopolis order was strong at the plate, with the top three hitters in the order accounting for five RBIs. Jared Waldhoff was 1-2 with an RBI and one run scored, while Derek Smith was 1-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Alex Goldstein had a two-run double and scored one run. Goldstein and Smith have been pacing the Wooden Shoes offense thus far in the fall. Goldstein is hitting .467 and Smith is carrying a .462 average. Alex Goldstein is hitting the ball really well and him and Smith are kind of leading us right now, Fleener said. We have some other guys who are coming around and hitting in the .300s as well. The cushion provided by the big inning and the lower implications of the fall season allowed Fleener to give 15 different players at bats and nine Wooden Shoes had at least one hit in the ballgame. [The fall] gives us a lot of different combinations and the opportunity to see what we are going to work on, Fleener said. John Ungrund earned the win for Teutopolis, closing out the final 3.1 innings of the five inning contest. He walked three including a hit batsman, but held Mulberry Grove hitless and struck out eight while throwing 38 of his 69 pitches for strikes. Sloan was the offensive leader for Mulberry Grove, collecting an RBI double in the first. Continued from B1 across the country and they do everything for me. With her helmet on, it would be easy to assume Katie is just a hard-nosed country tomboy. Pauline says that is not the case. She was always a tomboy as a younger girl but now, and I dont know if its a parents point of view, but she is just so
