Chapter 18 - Common Diseases and Conditions Terms: Fracture, Amputation, Cancer, Cast, Prosthesis, Arthritis, Osteoporosis, Epilepsy, Stroke/Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA), Hemiplegia, Seizure, Paraplegia, Quadriplegia, Myocardial Infrarction (MI)/ Heart Attack, Diabetes, Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Vomiting, Hypertension, Pneumonia _______________! ! ! ! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! _______________! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! _______________! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! _______________! ! ! ! A group of diseases characterized by out-of control cell division and growth leading to the development of a lump or mass of cells. Break in the bone, and the tissues around the fracture, including muscles, blood vessels nerves and tendons, are usually injured. Typically made of plaster, plastic or berglass. Purpose is to immobilize the broken bone in its normal position so that it may heal. The Removal of all or part of an extremity. Articial replacements for missing body parts. (i.e. Arms, Legs, etc.) A bone disorder in which the bone becomes porous and brittle and breaks easily. Bones in the spine, hips and wrists are most commonly affected. Joint inammation. Most common joint disease. Pain and decreased mobility occur in the affected joints. Chronic disorder involving recurring seizures. Temporary changes occur in the brain because of bursts of electrical energy. Violent and sudden contractions or tremors of muscles groups causing uncontrolled movements and loss of consciousness.! ! Sudden loss of brain function by an interruption of blood ow to the brain or a rupture of a blood vessel in the brain.! ! ! Paralysis of one side of the body. Paralysis from the waist down. Paralysis of all four limbs and the trunk. Client is paralyzed from the waist down. Abnormally high blood pressure. Also known as a Heart Attack. Death of heart tissue caused by lack of oxygen to the heart due to a sudden interruption of blood ow.!

Occurs when the heart cannot pump blood normally. Blood backs up and causes abnormal amount of uid in the tissues. ! Infection of the lung tissue. Air sacks in the lungs ll with liquid. Oxygen and carbon dioxide are not exchanged properly, causing insufcient oxygen in the blood. Act of expelling stomach contents through the mouth and signals illness or injury that can be life-threatening. A disorder in which the body cannot produce or use insulin properly.

Chapter 43 - Heat and Cold Applications Terms: Moist Heat Application, Frost Bite, Constrict, Dry Heat Application, Dilate _______________! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! _______________! Expand, open or make wider. When warm or hot, blood vessels do this. Involves water coming in contact with the skin. Has a faster effect than dry heat and penetrates muscles deeper. Water does not come into contact with skin. Stays at desired temperature longer but does not penetrate as deeply as moist heat. ! ! To squeeze or make narrow. When cold blood vessels do this. Condition in which skin and other tissues are damaged due to extreme cold.

Chapter 44 - Heat and Cold Applications Terms: Eupnea, Intubation, SOB, Hypoxia, Apnea, Sputum, Nasal Cannula! _______________! _______________! _______________! _______________! _______________! ! ! ! _______________! _______________! Acronym for Shortness of Breath Normal respirations The lack or absence of breathing A deciency of oxygen in the cells. A result of abnormal respiratory functioning. Used to deliver extra oxygen to a client. Consists of 2 prongs placed in the clients nostrils and a plastic tube tting behind the clients ears. Mucus from the respiratory system that is expelled through the mouth. Process of inserting an articial airway.
