PCR-CA-387 Commander's Corner:

Wing conference is coming up the last weekend of September. It's nice that this year it is close to home as They Ayers Hotel and Spa and The Ontario Convention Center will host this year's Wing Congference. You can find the dates on the Squadron Calendar. I'd really appreciate it if Squadron 5 made a good showing. Remember that in order to achieve your Level III attendance at two National, Regional or Wing conferences is required. Registration should be open July 1st. -MS

Awards committee will meet right after the general meeting to discuss nominations. The Aircraft is still up in Yucaia with a bad alternator. Lonn Olfert will be checking up on the status of the repairs this week and let the Commander know the details. Finance Report: Jeremy informed the squadron that the new flag is on order. We had all the funds needed. Vanguard has cashed the Wing check and we should be getting the flag in 4-6 weeks. We are beginning to collect dues for the 2nd half of the year. Jeremy will accept payments at the meetings and notate that your dues are paid and current. We have WAMO duty coming up. Mark Hill, Steve Groner and Gary Higginbotham have volunteered. Much thanks go out to those guys for supporting the Civil Air Patrol Emergency Services Mission. 26 JUN 2012 Page 2 Squadron Meeting Presentation: (Emergency Services)

Mark Robinson presentation for ES night. Reviewed the recent trip to Yucaia. Pointed out some of the dangers when there is a lot of AC involved with training. When you have instructors involved with students, there can be a lack of continuity with procedure. Anywhere from preflight to postflight, safety should always be priority #1. Always be aware of interruptions. Am I doing anything stupid? walk around the aircraft. Mountain flying: you should always be aware of weight. Our Emergency pack weighs 26lbs and sometimes we get a little overzealous. Weigh performance vs what that equip is going to do for us? If youre PIC make sure that during crew brief you actually look at what you plan on carrying. Especially when flying mountains, you need all the performance that you can get. Reviewed two fatal accidents getting low into the canyons and couldnt turn to get out of the canyons. Performance, performance, performance. CAP teaches new High altitude class (Mountain Flying). Suggested practicing 30, 45 & 60 degree bank turns a.k.a. back to the airport turns. And remember the time of turn and altitude loss. Also practice controlled crash. (Stalls with no flap and full flap TIAS 45 kts and 700fpm decent.) Nose over and pick up airspeed to get out of down drafts. Theres talk about doing Mt Flying later this year. Need to get funds approved. (Steve will work on that.) Watch weather, know your clouds. Watch the winds. Rotor clouds can be NASTY. Good tip from Terryif KRAL is experiencing Santa Anas, Redlands is almost always calm. The further away you can get from the mountains on the leeward side the better off youre going to be. Think of air like water. As wind comes over mountains it ripples down like rapids on a river. Gave the example of the Banning pass. Look at barometric pressure in KPSP vs KRIV. If theres a big difference, then you can expect turbulence.

Squadron Meeting Presentation: (WAMO)

WAMO duty excerpt from Gary Higginbotham: WAMO is set up for any AC missing or down. So Cal duty starts at 5pm (local) your day ends at 5pm (local) the following day. Call in to put your home phone or cell phone. Then check to make sure that your number went in. ELT or missing plane youll get a call from Maxwell AFB and theyll give you info for the mission. Place everything (the info) on the log and keep it. Theyll try to give you the most complete info they can. You have 30 minutes to find an IC to take the mission. Use the sheet for IC's. Once they say they will take it, youre off the hook. W/I 24 hours after your shift you fax all the logs that youve taken. Once your shift is over, the person that is taking the next shift should call you to let you know that its taken over. WAMO is filled this quarter by Mark Hill, Steve Groner & Gary Higginbotham. We are covering the whole WING. (Handed sheet to WAMO Duty Officers)
