Department of Experimental Psychology, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3UD England Research Outline: Collective Action as a Form of Civic Involvement: The Chilean Student Movement Introduction The present study is part of a larger international project which focuses on the psychological processes of collective action participation in various countries. Student movement in Chile in particular present a challenging context in terms of collective action participation as (a) it is a dynamic ongoing process since 2011; (b) has been successful in recruiting different interest groups, i.e. university and high school students toward an overarching objective. The main aim of the study therefore is to investigate the role of perceptions of group efficacy, temporal comparisons of disadvantage i.e. situation now in comparison to past and future, attributions of blame for the deteriorating conditions and social identity both in general and politicized forms on collective action participation. Most importantly, the study aims to uncover recursive effects of past participation in collective action on identity, specific group emotions, collective disadvantage, psychological well-being and willingness to participate in future collective mobilizations. Research Questions The main research questions of the study are: 1. Do temporal comparisons of collective disadvantage predict collective action tendencies independent of past participation? 2. What are the effects of specific intergroup emotions on collective action participation?. e.g. Does anger and fear predict participation independent of each other? 3. What are the outcomes of positive and stronger identification with the group, the Chilean student movement in this case, on the psychological well-being? E.g. When feel a stronger bond with the movement do they feel better and have positive emotions about themselves? 4. Does past participation in collective action in return influence how people identify with their group? 5. Do people participate more when they believe that they have the efficacy to change the situation to their benefit?

Methodology The project involves a quantitative approach which utilizes primary data to be collected randomly from participants in the student movement. The underlying analytical strategy is structural equation modelling which is the most advanced method for survey data analysis and the data will be processed using MPlus and SPSS. No personal information will be collected.

Dissemination and Policy Implications The main outcomes of the study are expected to be published in internationally refereed
journals.

The relevant party, in this case the Confederation of Students in Chile will

also be briefed and a written report will be submitted. The report will present a synthesis of the findings from a cross-national perspective and include findings from other studies which are currently underway in Greece, Italy and Turkey. The outcomes of this research will both enable CONFECH to have a social psychological assessment of the movement and perhaps make long term plans to improve the level of integration among its members.
