SHANNON CAULFIELD/The Marlton Sun
Athletes compete in the swim portion of the race during their
heat in the Marlton Lakes Triathlon Saturday, Sept. 1, benefitting
the Marlton Lakes Community Association and the local Boy
Scout troop.
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Marlton Sun
The Marlton Lakes Triathlon held its 12th annu-
al race Sept. 1. The athletes faced a quarter-mile
swim, an 11-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run to
finish the course.
Its always been the same weekend every year.
The local community loves it, said triathlon or-
ganizer Chuck Sellers.
The money collected from the race will be do-
nated locally, according to Sellers. Approximately
$4,000 of the money raised will be donated to the
Marlton Lakes Community Association, and a do-
nation of $1,000 will be made to local Boy Scout
troops who attended the event and volunteered
their time to help out.
In addition to the Boy Scout volunteers, Weg-
mans and the local Subway donated food for the
runners following the end of the race.
Wegmans and Subway donate all the food, and
four or five Wegmans employees are actually run-
ning the event, Sellers said.
Four hundred and fifty-three athletes from the
tri-state area participated in the event, two of
whom placed in the top 100 of their heat and were
younger than the age of 15.
It was really fun; it was my first triathlon.
Once I got my time going, it was really fun, said
Chris Avila, 13, of Delaware. Getting out of the
water and knowing you still had an hour to go was
the toughest part.
Avila finished with a time of an hour and nine

97th overall in his heat. Avilas 10-
year-old brother, Andrew, the
youngest competitor in the race,
finished with a time of an hour
and seven minutes and 47 seconds
placing him 85th overall in his
heat.
I liked the transitions a lot,
said Andrew. The hardest part
was getting off the bike since Im
a strong runner and I still had to
do my strongest part. This
[course] was more challenging
than the USATF Junior
Olympics. The young runner
boasted a fifth place spot in the
USA Junior Olympics Track and
Field competition in July.
Retired chief of police of Med-
ford Township and current
Lenape Regional High School Dis-
trict security and emergency
management coordinator, James
Kehoe, participated in the
triathlon.
Ive done marathons, half
marathons and Tough Mudders,
and this was just a new challenge
to try. I loved it, Kehoe said. Its
different because I dont bike that
much, I dont swim that much. It
was fun. It was different chal-
lenge.
Kehoe is a current resident of
Marlton living approximately five
miles from the race site. The
course utilized the roads of Lake
Shore Drive and Tomlinson Mill
road, all of which were recently
repaved by the township just days
before the event.
Its a great challenge, and its
great for the community. A lot of
people come out and participate,
Kehoe said.
Medford resident and mom,
Laura Pinto, participated in the
race following the birth of her
youngest child and eight weeks of
training.
I had a baby eight months ago
and started working with a train-
er, Patti Ann Finch. Shes awe-
some, said Pinto. She not only
trained me to get into shape, but
she trained me to get in shape for
this. It was a great experience.
Pinto finished the race in an
hour and 26 minutes and had pre-
viously hoped to simply finish at
all.
I havent even run since high
school. Its good for my kids to see
I can do things like this, Pinto
said.

Department to hold
Coffee with a Cop
A new program offered by the
Evesham Township Police De-
partment offers our citizens an
informal venue to ask questions
or voice their concerns.
Officers from the Evesham
Township Police Department will
be available to answer law en-
forcement related questions dur-
ing our second Coffee with a Cop
event held Sept. 22 from 8 a.m. to
10 a.m. at the Starbucks located at
300 Route 73 South in Marlton.
The Coffee with a Cop pro-
gram is a unique way to strength-
en the partnership between the
police department and communi-
ty we serve. It is designed to en-
hance communication between
concerned citizens and township
police officers, said Evesham
Township Police Chief Michael
Barth. We believe that this type
of open dialogue plays a critical
role in establishing a true part-
nership between the community
and the police department.
Members of the community will
be able to ask specific or general
questions related to the neighbor-
hoods they live in.
The Evesham Township Police
Department places a high priori-
ty on community partnerships
and believes these types of events
can only foster better relation-
ships.
The police department is plan-
ning on hosting the Coffee with a
Cop on several occasions
throughout the year in the town-
ship.
For additional information,
please contact Lieutenant
Thomas Reinholt at (856) 983-1116.
Additional dates and locations
will be posted on the Evesham
Township Police Departments
Facebook page as they become
available.

T
he news from July wasnt great
for Atlantic City: another big
loss in casino win money from
the same month last year.
But, all is not lost, and August prom-
ised to be a bit better because we avoid-
ed a tropical storm, unlike last year.
The state reported that casino rev-
enue was down 9.5 percent from July
2011. That includes a lost weekend
(2011 had five weekends).
But comparing year-over-year data
might not be all that relevant to At-
lantic Citys future. Big wins or loss-
es on the part of high-rolling gam-
blers can make a difference. And the
citys fate really doesnt lie in the
hands of a hot weekend here and
there.
Atlantic Citys future depends on be-
coming a vacation destination for peo-
ple who not only like to gamble, but
also enjoy fine dining, entertainment,
nightlife and more.
The days of relying on busloads of
gamblers from surrounding states to
pay the bills are over. Those buses now
stop at casinos that are located much
closer to the gambers homes. Atlantic
City casinos have registered losses
ever since Pennsylvania opened its
casinos almost six years ago. Pennsyl-
vania gamblers, quite naturally, are
staying closer to home. At least those
who just want to spend a few hours in
front of a slot machine.
Atlantic Citys future is more closely
tied to new ventures, such as the Revel,
which is touting itself as something
much more than just a gambling hall.
That casino is seeing revenue growth.
Maybe not as much or as quickly as all
would like, but, nonetheless, it is grow-
ing.
Atlantic City has to reinvent itself
and thats not an impossible task. It
has to become the East Coast version
off Las Vegas something so grand, so
spectacular that people bypass their
local gambling establishment to expe-
rience something special.
Its on its way. But it wont get there
overnight.
in our opinion
Nothing to revel about
But we like Atlantic Citys efforts to be more than a slot machine parlor
AC might finally get it
Sure the July casino revenue numbers
were down. But a new marketing cam-
paign and other efforts seem to indi-
cate that Atlantic City finally realizes it
has to be something other than a col-
lection of gambling halls.
School district plans to go green
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Marlton Sun
The Evesham School District will be
going green, and discussed the plan at
the Aug. 23 Board of Education meeting.
The initiatives will be in effect beginning
with the school year.
Approval of the contract for an energy
audit was passed, and, according to Dennis
Nettleton, the schools business adminis-
trator, the schools will be utilizing more
than one method to make them green.
Were really excited about the energy
audit. It will help the school become more
energy efficient, Nettleton said.
The program allows the school to obtain
high-energy audits outlining where energy
is expended. The report is of no cost to the
school, according to Nettleton, and an indi-
cator of where they need improvement.
One of our biggest goals is the green-
ing of our school, and this is a step in the
right direction, said Nettleton.
The schools will participate in a com-
posting program organized that will have
pick ups by a local composting business out
of Marlton.
Take green beans, said Nettleton. Say
they [the students] dont like them. Instead
of all those green beans being dumped in
the trash, it will be put in compost bin and
taken away as compost.
Additionally, the board of education is
getting involved in the movement by hold-
ing completely green meetings. The agenda
is now put online for anyone to see. By
using computers and iPads to conduct
their meetings, the board also is able to
eliminate the use of paper.
Board meetings are now electronic and
searchable. Everybody uses an iPad for
meetings, its a positive experience, said
Nettleton. We dont want to just show the
kids, but teach them.
Were doing more with composting and
recycling, said Sandy Student, board of
education president. We changed out the
lights, use bio-diesel fuel in the winter.
Were really proud of what we do.

In other news, the student ac-
tivity fees for after school were
discussed and the cost to parents
was waived by a majority vote.
According to Student, the
school will see up to $195,000 in
savings by reducing transporta-
tion by a third party and will use
the money toward funding the
after school programs.
Majority ruled to use the sav-
ings toward our after-school pro-
grams, said Student.
The way school board mem-
bers will be sworn in has been al-
tered, following the recent meet-
ing.
There was some question
about the election. This is the
first year the school board elec-
tion is being held in November
and we ultimately decided to
allow anyone who is authorized
in the state of N.J., a mayor, or
governor, to be sworn in, said
Student.

Although lending standards have

Our growth in volume bears that

KELLEY
During the month of July, nine
talented Marlton musicians
joined nearly 100 musicians from
high schools all over the north-
east on a musical tour of six
countries in central Europe.
American honors music students
have been serving as musical am-
bassadors to Europe for over 35
years with the American Music
Abroad program.
Their high school band and
choral directors from over 70 dif-
ferent high schools from New Jer-
sey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and
Ohio nominated the students. Ap-
proximately 65 band members
and 50 choral students performed
a total of nine concerts in five
countries over a three-week Euro-
pean tour, including the
Farewell Concert for their par-
ents and family members at
Millersville University.
The tour took them to Paris
and Strasbourg, France; Lake
Lucerne and Engelberg, Switzer-
land; Venice and Motogrotto
Terme, Italy; Salzburg, Westen-
dorf, Mayrhofen, and Rattenberg,
Austria; Dinkelsbuhl, the Dachau
concentration camp, Munich,
Garmisch and Oberamergau,
Germany; and concluded in
Zurich, Switzerland.
The students are not only
gaining the musical, travel and
social experiences of the tour but
also helping to promote and share
an American message of peace,
unity, tolerance and brotherhood
through our music and through
our youth, said Keith Hodgson,
director of instrumental music at
Mainland Regional High School
in Linwood.
Leanne Friedman, junior at
Cherokee High School stated, It
is amazing that my love of music
has led me to this opportunity.
Prior to the trip, I never believed I
would have been able to combine
the joys of traveling with per-
forming throughout Europe.
The students return with a
heightened sense of perspective
about their world. Perspective is
the most remarkable impact I
think one can have on this trip.
Cultural and historical perspec-
tives as well as personal, musical,
and social perspectives. For me,
experiencing the dark depths of
Dachau and the exhilarating high
of being 10,000 feet in the Alps on
back to back days, gives me an
emotional perspective that I
never get tired of experiencing,
said Hodgson.
Jimmy Boyle, a recent Chero-
kee graduate and current student
at the University of the Arts in
Philadelphia commented, Al-
though we were in European
countries, the AMA trip made me
even more proud to be an Ameri-
can citizen.
The American Music Abroad
Opportunity of a Lifetime Gold
Tour continues their adventure
in 2013, returning to some of our
favorite stops, and new in 2013:
Prague in the Czech Republic.
Please contact Keith Hodgson
with questions and further infor-
mation by email at keithhodg-
son1@me.com.

Designation given to mortgage
professionals with high rankings
perfect credit.
According to Five Star Profes-
sional, the Five Star Mortgage
Professional designation is given
to mortgage professionals who
rank highly in surveys conducted
among homebuyers, real estate
agents and title companies in the
mortgage professionals own re-
gion. In addition to the survey re-
sults, other evaluation criteria
such as acceptable disciplinary
action and evaluation results by a
panel of local industry experts
are incorporated into the overall
evaluation process. The final list
of Five Star Mortgage Profession-
als represents less than 7 percent
of the mortgage professionals in
the local market.
The recognition allows Kelley
to identify himself as a Five Star
Mortgage Professional and dis-
play the accompanying emblem
in all marketing vehicles. He is
also listed in a directory of Five
Star Mortgage Professionals
searchable by consumers at
www.fivestarprofessional.com.
Kelley studied business admin-
istration at Bloomsburg Universi-
ty in Bloomsburg, Pa. Kelley also
served in the United States Army,
based in Fort Sill, Okla. He re-
sides in Marlton, with his wife
Jennifer and their four children.
