MDD OVERVIEW
Media Democracy Days 2012
For those new to Media Democracy Days, Id like to welcome each of you and give
you an idea of who we are, and what you can expect at this years events.
Media Democracy Days is organized by the Media Democracy Project, a group of
people from both the academic and activist communities who are committed to
democratizing the media.
We believe that the media are central to democracy for at least three reasons: (i) Tey
are a signifcant source of political and cultural information for Canadians. (ii) Tey
make some perspectives or messages part of the public discourse and neglect or omit
others. And (iii) they are increasingly owned by large corporate conglomerates, who
wield signifcant political and economic power. Our project is to promote democracy
both within the media system and through the media, and focus on three principles,
Know the media | Be the media | Change the media
To know the media is to understand how the media system works, what content is
excluded, how it developed this way, and what the efects are. For example, you can
learn more about the efect of ownership on labour practices in this years panel on
Working in the Communications and Creative Industries. You can also explore
trends in media content and practices in the panels on Decolonizing Media,
Muzzling the Scientists and Big Data and Political Marketing.
To be the media means enhancing the opportunities for citizens to actively
participate in media-making. Tis year we are ofering three hands-on workshops on
Friday for participants to learn about making community radio, promoting missing
stories, and flmmaking for political change. As well, all day Saturday we host a Media
Fair in the Promenade of the Vancouver Public Library, where over thirty groups will
be displaying the important work they are do year round. I urge you to take some
time to check out these vibrant community organizations.
To change the media recognizes that if we are to re-imagine a functioning democratic
media we have to intervene in the existing mediascape and make it diferent. Tis
means engaging with questions of policy an area where our partner group,
OpenMedia.ca has been particularly efective. More discussion about changing the
media can be found at the panel discussions on Whos Watching You: Te Policitis
of Surveillance and Keeping the Media Public.
Now, more than ever, we need media that is diverse, responsive, and that enhances
democracy. Our hope is that you leave MDD inspired to take part in changing and
recreating the media system.

Who We Are
Robert A. Hackett is a founding member of Media Demcracy Days,
and is a Professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser
University.
Steve Anderson is the Executive Director of OpenMedia.ca, and has
been involved with MDD since 2007.
Kathleen Cross is an Assistant Professor in the School of
Communication at Simon Fraser University and currently serves as
Chair of the Steering Committee.
Stuart Poyntz is an Assistant Professor in the School of
Communication at Simon Fraser University and currently serves as
Programming Advisor for MDD.
Tyler Morgenstern is the Program Director at the BC Freedom
of Information and Privacy Association, and has been active with
MDD since 2009.

Change, representatives from rabble.ca will teach strategies for
Promoting Te Missing Stories. Finally, Te Cinematheque will
host a workshop on Media, Revolutions and Regimes.

What: Plenary session featuring Ricardo Dominguez, the founder of
the Electronic Disturbance Teatre and one of the designers of
the Transborder Immigrant Tool. Te day will feature panels
addressing science communication, the role of public media,
surveillance, countercolonial media, labour in the
communications sectors, and political marketing.

Julian Sefon-Green is an independent consultant and
researcher working in Education and the Cultural and
Creative Industries. He is currently Principal Research
Fellow at the Department of Media & Communication,
London School of Economics, and a research associate at
the University of Oslo working on projects in London and
Oslo exploring learning and learner identity in schooling
and community learning. He is an Honorary Professor of
Education at the University of Nottingham, UK and the
Institute of Education, Hong Kong.

Hosted by: Stuart Poyntz, Research Director, YDME Project
Te Youth Digital Media Ecologies (YDME) Research Symposium is part of the
YDME Research Project (funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research
Council). We explore the youth media production scene in Vancouver and ask:
How many groups do this work in the Lower Mainland, what are their similarities
and diferences, how (if at all) do groups work together, what conditions are helping
or harming their development? How do they create innovative ways of making media
with youth?

Julian Sefon-Green - From Creative Learning to Creative Lives:
Contextualising the Youth and Community Non-Formal Education Sector
Te place of not-school learning organizations is frmly if unequally established as
part of the ecologies of educational provision in many cities across the developed
world. In many of these initiatives there is an interest in and commitment to a range
of creative activities, art, drama and forms of media making. In this talk Julian Sefon-
Green refects on what it means to talk about learning outside of school and explore
the signifcance of some creative biographies - examining the efect over time on
people who participate in such initiatives when young and what diference it might
make to them from a life-long perspective.

Making Radio for Social Change:
A Hands On Workshop
(Alma VanDusen Room, 1:00-2:20PM)
A hands-on introduction to accessing and creating community radio. Participants
will discover the pros and cons of diferent techniques for broadcast journalism, as
well as why communtiy radio is uniquely suited to those with a keen interest in
non-commercial and anti-establishment programming. If you want to develop
needed skills, this workshop is for you! Led by members of Redeye, CFRO
Community Radios longest running public afairs program, broadcasting at 100.5
FM every Saturday from 9:00AM-12:00PM.
Promoting The Missing Stories
Promoting the Missing Stories is aimed at engaging participants in both
identifying under reported stories and developing new strategies for how we might
make them more visible. Hosted by members of rabble.ca, one of Canadas leading
non-proft independent media organizations, this workshop enhances opportunities
for citizens to actively participate in media-making, and draw attention to stories
and perspectives obscured by dominant, highly-commercialized, and increasingly
consolidated news media.

Media, Revolutions and Regimes
In all revolutions across history and geography, communication and technology
have played a crucial role in the spreading of ideas. Te use of the printing press
during the French Revolution, the propagandist flms of Nazi Germany, and more
recently the use of social media during the Arab Spring all illustrate how
revolutionaries and oppressors alike have utilized communication technologies. Tis
workshop engages us in discussion about how diferent media tools have been used
to attempt to surveil and control societies, and how the very same tools can be taken
up as weapons of revolution. Join us to analyze what it takes to not only cause a
revolution, but to create one as well, and how that matters to us in the new
information society of the 21st century. Hosted by Te Cinematheque.

Sunera Tobani is a Professor of Womens and Gender
Studies at the University of British Columbia. Her
extensive community work includes serving as the
president of the National Action Committee on the
Status of Women (NAC), where she was committed
to making the politics of anti-racism central to the
womens movement. She regularly speaks on a variety of
issues, including the impact of globalization on womens
citizenship, Canadian immigration and social policy,
new reproductive technologies, violence against women,
and women and the Asia-Pacifc Economic Cooperation (APEC). Her current
research includes a Hampton Research Grant project, Gender, Globalization and
International Confict: Representation of Women in the Print Media and a SSHRC
funded project, Television Representations of Women and the War on Terrorism.

Kathleen Cross is an Assistant Professor in the School of
Communication at Simon Fraser University where her research
interests include democratic communication, news media
analysis, gender in media, public opinion, and the analysis
of political campaigns and elections. She serves as National
Coordinator for the Global Media Monitoring Project, focused
on gender representation in media.

Every time 22-year-old Heba Affy heads out to cover
the historical events shaping her countrys future, her
mother is compelled to remind her, I know you are a
journalist, but youre still a girl! Defying cultural norms
and family expectations, Heba takes to the streets to report
on an Egypt in turmoil, using tweets, texts and Facebook
posts. Her coming of age, political awakening and the
disillusionment that follows, mirrors that of a nation
seeking the freedom to shape its own destiny, dignity and
democracy.

Ricardo Dominguez is a co-founder of Te Electronic Disturbance Teater (EDT),
a group who developed Virtual-Sit-In technologies in 1998 in solidarity with the
Zapatista communities in Chiapas, Mexico. His recent Electronic Disturbance
Teater project, the *Transborder Immigrant Tool* (a GPS cellphone safety net
tool for crossing the Mexico/U.S border) was the winner of the Transnational
Communities Award (2008), handed out by the U.S. Embassy in Mexico.
*Transborder Immigrant Tool* was exhibited at 2010 California Biennial (OCMA),
Toronto Free Gallery, Canada (2011). Te project was also under investigation by
the U.S. Congress in 2009/10, and was also reviewed by Glenn Beck in 2010 as a
gesture that potentially dissolved the U.S. border with its poetry. Ricardo is an
Associate Professor at UCSD in the Visual Arts Department, a Hellman Fellow, and
Principal/Principle Investigator at CALIT2 (http://bang.calit2.net). With artists
Diane Ludin, Nina Waisman, Amy Sara Carroll, he co-founded Te Particle Project,
which produced an art project about nano-toxicology entitled *Particles of Interest:
Tales of the Matter Market* that has been presented in numerous cities, most
recently Madrid (2009), New York (2010) and Mexico (2012).
Communication at Simon Fraser University. His research
interests include the relationship of children and youth with
media, public sphere theory, with specifc concern for the work
of Hannah Arendt, and young peoples historical thinking,
particularly in relation to digital media technologies.

Tis panel will discuss the role of non-commercial media in a democratic society.
Issues may include the extent to which such media reveal the limits of highly
commercialized news media, recent cuts to the CBC, and the role of public policy in
shaping a more independent media terrain.

Tis discussion will consider the role big data plays in contemporary political
campaigns and its implications for personal privacy rights, public relations, and public
policy. It will also consider other new developments and trends in political marketing
in Canada.

Tis panel will focus on the important challenges facing science communication,
including such issues as media framing of environmental news, the Harper
governments censorship of government scientists, and the consequences for public
policy.
Decolonizing Media
(Alice MacKay Room, 3:00-4:30PM, Page 16)
Tis panel showcases the eforts of various cultural groups struggling to carve out
media space in a highly Eurocentric media landscape, and asks how such groups
address and unsettle structural media barriers for marginalized or abandoned groups.
Whos Watching You? Te Politics of Surveillance

Tis panel will address questions of surveillance, privacy, and electronic civil liberties
in Canada, including such issues as Bill C-30, the Trans-Pacifc Partnership, and
increased perimeter security.
Working in the Communications and Creative Industries

Tis panel will address the challenges and precariousness confronting those working
in the communications and creative industries, both nationally and internationally,
including; new media, material labour, cultural work, and journalism.

Sylvia Richardson is the Vice-president of AMARC-North
America (World Association of Community Radio
Broadcasters), a PhD student in the Faculty of Education
at Simon Fraser University, and the Host and Producer of
Latin Waves, an internationally syndicated radio program
that educates the public about the extraordinary changes and
social movements that are happening in Latin America. Born
and raised in El Salvador of Indigenous and Spanish ancestry,
Sylvia was educated in El Salvador until the age of 15 when a
civil war forced her to leave the country. Her book, Flesh
Mapping: Cartography of Struggle, Renewal and Hope in
Education by Peter Lang Publishing comes out this fall.
Tyler Morgenstern has worked with Media Democracy Days
in various roles since 2009. In other lives, he is an arts, culture,
and politics writer with publication credits in Sad Mag, Art
Treat, rabble.ca, Te Hufngton Post, and the Toronto Star.
Recently, he helped to launch OpenMedia.cas Reimagine
CBC initiative and currently serves as Program Director at
the BC Freedom of Information and Privacy Association.
Jean Broughton is Staf Representative for the Canadian
Media Guild (which represents CBC employees) and is
particularly interested in building rights for freelancers and
precarious workers. Outside of the labour movement, Jean has
been involved with anti-colonial organizing, radical education,
and the anti-globalization movement.

Alden E. Habacon is an accomplished diversity and inclusion
specialist. He is the Director, Intercultural Understanding
Strategy Development for the University of British Columbia
(UBC) and previously the Manager of Diversity Initiatives for
CBC Television. He is the Publisher of Schema Magazine, and
the co-founder of the Asian Canadian Journalists Association
in Vancouver.

Colin Bennett has taught in the Department of Political
Science at the University of Victoria since 1986, where he is
now Professor. His research has focused on the comparative
analysis of surveillance technologies and privacy protection
policies at the domestic and international levels. He has just
coauthored a report on privacy and political parties for the
Ofce of the Privacy Commissioner available at:

Marie Della Mattia is President of NOW Communications,
a progressive advertising agency serving unions, governments
and causes across Canada. She specializes in the creation and
delivery of persuasive messages that move audiences. Born with
a passion for politics, she feels very lucky to have made a career
of it - without having to run for ofce herself.
Mario Canseco is Vice President, Angus Reid Public Opinion.
He is responsible for designing survey questionnaires on a wide
range of sociological and political issues, and has worked on the
election teams for all the democratic processes that have been
covered by Angus Reids unique online methodology, including
the 2008 and 2011 Canadian Federal Elections. Mario holds an
Masters of Journalism from the University of British Columbia,
and a BA in Communication from Mexico Citys Universidad
Iberoamericana.

SATURDAY PANELS
Lorene Oikawa is the frst Asian Canadian vice president for the
BC Government and Service Employees Union (BCGEU), and
was re-elected to her third term in 2011. BCGEU represents
members who work in direct provincial government, and a
variety of sectors including community health, community
social services, child care, post-secondary institutions, hotels,
and the Canada Line. Lorene has authored articles on a range of
topics including health care, poverty, human rights and more.

Shane Gunster is an Associate Professor in the School of
Communication at Simon Fraser University where his research
criteria include news media analysis (esp. talk radio and coverage
of environmental issues), political communication (esp.
neo-conservative political discourse), and advertising and
consumer culture.
Emma Pullman is a Vancouver-based researcher, writer and
campaigner focused on climate and energy, oil and politics and
corporate accountability issues. Emma is a campaigner for global
corporate accountability organization SumOf Us.org, and is the
Director of Research for Leadnow.ca. Emma is also a freelance
writer and has had her work published in outlets including
DeSmogBlog, Hufngton Post, and the Vancouver Observer.
Otto Langer began work at DFO and Environment Canada
in 1969 in stream protection, contaminants control and
enforcement. He has been an expert witness in over 100 habitat
and pollution trials across Canada. In 2001 he moved to the David
Suzuki Foundation and retired in 2006. He is active in providing
volunteer expertise to many environmental groups and most
recently exposed the Harper governments plans to undermine
environmental legislation in Canada.
Tzeporah Berman is an infuential activist who, in the early
nineties, joined the protests to save the endangered rainforests of
Clayoquot Sound and, for her involvement, faced one thousand
criminal charges and six years in prison. Later, with ForestEthics,
she took on Victorias Secret with a well-publicized photo of
a chainsaw-wielding lingerie model, pressuring the catalogue
manufacturer to stop using paper made from old-growth forests.
Recently, she co-founded PowerUp Canada to focuses on the
Canadian Tar Sands role in climate change.

Isabelle Ct is a Professor of Marine Ecology in the Department
of Biological Sciences at Simon Fraser University. Dr. Ct has
published more than 120 scientifc papers on a variety of topics
in marine ecology and conservation, including a recent paper in
the prestigious journal Science, where she, along with two of
her colleagues, criticized the Harper governments rationale for
disabling Canadas Fisheries Act, arguing that such changes were
not supported by any clear evidence.

Decolonizing Media

Imran Munir has had extensive work experience in media
and journalism since 1986. His academic research and writ-
ings have focused on social movements, religion, democracy,
fundamentalism, and political communication. His work looks
at struggles for democratic communication in the complex and
compelling development of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
Fatima Jafer is a PhD student at the Interdisciplinary Studies
Program at UBC, where she also serves as Editor-in-Chief of
Cutting Edge, a peer-reviewed journal. A longtime activist
and alternative journalist, she currently writes occasional guest
columns for Xtra-West, and is a member of Salaam Vancouver
(Muslim LGBTQs), and facilitator of Trikone Vancouver, a
South Asian LGBTQ group.
Indira Prahst is Chair of the Department of Sociology and
Anthropology at Langara College. Her academic work centres
on the structures of state power, the intersection of racism and
sexism, and media representations. She is a Co-investigator on
Acting Together Community University Research Alliance
(CURA & SSHRC) project on gangs, is a columnist for the
Asian Journal, and a host for Asian Pulse Television.
Sarah Hunts activism began at the age of 14, when she spoke
about Indigenous rights at a rally for the Clayoquot Sound.
More than 20 years later, Sarah continues to work as an educator
and community collaborator on issues of colonial violence,
self determination, law and power, sex work, gender and
sexuality. Sarah is of Ukrainian and Kwakwakawakw ancestry,
and is currently a PhD candidate at SFU and contributor to
mediaINDIGENA.com.

Micheal Vonn is a lawyer and the Policy Director of the BC
Civil Liberties Association. She has been an Adjunct Professor
in the faculty of law at the University of British Columbia and
an Adjunct Professor at the UBC School of Library, Archival
and Information Studies, where she teaches information ethics
and intellectual freedom. She is a frequent speaker on a variety
of civil liberties topics including free speech and democratic
rights.
Lindsey Pinto is the Communications Manager of
OpenMedia.ca, a grassroots organization that safeguards the
possibilities of the open Internet. She aspires to put Canada
on the map as a leader in Internet freedom and accessibility,
and the efective use of independent media for political
communication. Her work centres on advancing informed and
participatory digital policy.
Karen Reilly is Development Director at Te Tor Project,
responsible for fundraising, advocacy, general marketing,
and policy outreach programs for Tor. Tor a is sofware
and volunteer network that enables people to circumvent
censorship and guard their privacy online. She studied
Government and International Politics at George Mason
University.
Gary McCarron is an Associate Professor in the School of
Communication at Simon Fraser University. He is mainly
interested in the study of rhetoric and conciliation, with a
particular focus on theories of debt and forgiveness.

Enda Brophy is an Assistant Professor in the School of
examines labour and labour organizing in the media and
communication industries, social movements, and the political
economy of the contemporary university. He is collaborating
with Greig de Peuter and Nicole Cohen on a SSHRC-supported
research project, Flexible Workforces Respond to the Creative
Economy: Te Recomposition of Labour Politics in an Age of
Precarity.
Mark Cameron presently serves as a National Staf
Representative for the Communications, Energy and
Paperworkers Union of Canada. Prior to this year Mark
Cameron spent a quarter of a century as a broadcast television
news editor. Combined with a decade of union activism and
leadership, Marks experience gives him a unique perspective
on regulations and labour relations within the communications
industry.

Kathryn Gretsinger is the lead instuctor in Integrated
Journalism at the UBC Graduate School of Journalism.She also
coordinates the schools internship program. Kathryns passion
is audio storytelling in current afairs, news and documentary
production. She began her career at CBC Radio 26 years ago.
Since then, she has worked in various capacities from writer/
broadcaster to producer to host. She continues her work with
the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation as a trainer, journalist
and host.
Irene Lanzinger is a long-time union activist and teacher. She
began her teaching career in 1978 and taught in Vancouver and
overseas. Irene was very active in the B.C. Teachers Federa-
tion serving as president of the Vancouver Secondary Teachers
association. She served as an Ofcer of the B.C. Federation of
Labour from 2007 to 2010, and was elected to the position of
Secretary-Treasurer of the B.C. Federation of Labour in 2010.
Ricardo Dominguez is a co-founder of Te Electronic
Disturbance Teater (EDT), an Associate Professor at UCSD
in the Visual Arts Department, and a Hellman Fellow, and
Principal/Principle Investigator at CALIT2 (http://bang.calit2.
net). in 1998, EDT developed Virtual-Sit-In technologies in
solidarity with the Zapatista communities in Chiapas, Mexico.
His recent EDT project, the *Transborder Immigrant Tool*
(a GPS cellphone safety net tool for crossing the Mexico/U.S
border) was the winner of the Transnational Communities
Award.
Sunera Tobani is a Professor of Womens and Gender
Studies at the University of British Columbia. Her extensive
community work includes serving as the president of the
National Action Committee on the Status of Women (NAC).
She regularly speaks on a variety of issues, including the impact
of globalization on womens citizenship, Canadian immigration
and social policy, new reproductive technologies, violence
against women, and women and the Asia-Pacifc Economic
Cooperation (APEC).

David will speak about his new book, Occupy the Economy: Challenging Capitalism
Like that well known substance, Capitalism has hit the fan.
Todays economic crisis is the most severe since the Great Depression.
What are its root causes? Te conventional explanations put the
blame on greedy bankers who pawned of credit default swaps,
sub-prime mortgages, and a smorgasbord of derivatives, on a hapless
and helpless public. To make matters worse there was little or no
regulation. So if we tinker with some reform measures, pass some
legislation, a tax cut here, a little stimulus package there - everything
will be hunky-dory. Will it? Te seismic failures and problems plaguing Capitalism are
systemic and deep. Many people are sufering. But not the upper crust. Tey are riding
the gravy train to more riches. It is not a question of a few rotten apples. It is past time
to examine the barrel that keeps producing the bad apples. Fundamental change is
necessary to avoid future collapses.

Te Media Democracy Project has also expanded to include a speaker series that
will run throughout 2012 and 2013. Entitled CounterCulture, and in partnership
with the Institute for the Humanities at SFU, these additional events will sustain
the discussion about media and democracy. Our frst event took place October 3rd,
2012, and featured selections from Velcrow Ripper & Ian MacKenzies Occupy
Love documentary feature flm, as well as a panel discussion on the challenges of
documenting the Occupy movement.

6:30-10:00PM at SFUs Harbour Centre campus to welcome renowned author,
commentator and broadcaster, David Barsamian.

David Barsamian is director of Alternative Radio and author
of many books, including Targeting Iran. One of Americas
most tireless and wide-ranging journalists, he has altered the
independent media landscape, both with his weekly radio
program and with his books based on interviews with Noam
Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Tariq Ali, Edward Said, Eqbal Ahmad,
and Arundhati Roy. His articles and interviews appear in Te
Progressive, Te Sun, and other magazines and journals.
