About CWPRS
Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune as it is known today was established in 1916 is a premier National Institute offering a wide range of R&D services related to hydraulics and allied areas for providing research inputs for the design and development of projects in water recourses, river engineering, port sector and coastal developments. Today, CWPRS is a multi-disciplinary research organisation with no parallels in India. With its recognition in 1971 as the Regional Laboratory for ESCAP, the institution is playing a greater role in rendering technical advice and guidance to a number of developing countries. Objectives : The feasibility of a Coastal Engineering Project needs to be confirmed through hydraulic and environment related model studies. The physical and mathematical models, however, need extensive data on various coastal parameters. The studies are not only useful for the optimization of these projects to meet the engineering objectives but also help in cost reduction and conforming to the environmental regulations. Coastal engineering is a specialized subject and rarely taught in academic institutions in India. The objective of this short course is to give an exposure to practicing engineers / scientists about the modeling techniques and data needs along with knowledge on post construction monitoring of the coastal engineering projects . Course Contents The course will consist of lectures by expert professionals from Central Water & Power Research Station (CWPRS). The lectures would cover theory along with discussions on typical case studies covering, in general, the following aspects: Introduction to Coastal Engineering Wave and tidal hydrodynamics Field data collection and analysis Hydraulic modeling techniques (Physical and Mathematical) for: Wave propagation and tidal circulation Sediment transport Coastal structures Marine outfalls Dredge disposal and surveys for dredging operations Remote sensing & GIS modeling technique
