qWorkshop Safety Rules

1.Always listen carefully to the teacher and follow instructions. 2. Do not run in the workshop, you could bump into another pupil and cause an accident. 3. Know where the emergency stop buttons are positioned in the workshop. If you see an accident at the other side of the workshop you can use the emergency stop button to turn off all electrical power to machines. 4. Always wear an apron as it will protect your clothes and hold lose clothing such as ties in place. 5. Wear good strong shoes. training shoes are not suitable. 6. When attempting practical work all stools should be put away. 7. Bags should not be brought into a workshop as people can trip over them. 8. When learning how to use a machine, listen very carefully to all the instructions given by the teacher. Ask questions, especially if you do not fully understand. 9. Do not use a machine if you have not been shown how to operate it safely by the teacher. 10. Always be patient, never rush in the workshop. 11. Always use a guard when working on a machine. 12. Keep hands away from moving/rotating machinery. 13. Use hand tools carefully, keeping both hands behind the cutting edge. 14. Report any damage to machines/equipment as this could cause an accident

General Arc Welding Safety

Read all warning labels and instruction manuals, especially if this is the first time youre using the equipment. Proper eye protection is mandatory. Before starting any welding, make a complete inspection of the welder. Remove all potential fire hazards from the welding area. Always have a fire extinguisher ready.

Equip welding machines with power disconnect switches for quick shut off. Disconnect the power to the machine before making repairs. Proper grounding of welding machines is essential. Electrode holders should not be used if they have: Loose cable connections Defective jaws Poor insulation Remove rods when the job is finished.

Do not strike an arc if someone without proper eye protection is nearby

SAFETY RULES FOR OXY-ACETYLENE WELDING

Never use Acetylene gas at a pressure over 15 psig. Never use damaged equipment. Never use oil or grease on or around Oxygen equipment. Never use Oxygen or fuel gas to blow dirt or dust off clothing or equipment. Never light a torch with matches or a lighter. Always use a striker. When opening an Oxygen or fuel cylinder valve, always crack it open first. Always make sure regulators have their adjusting screws released by turning them counter clockwise till free before opening cylinder valves. Stand to the side of a regulator, not in front of it when opening cylinder valves. Always wear the proper welding goggles, gloves and clothing when operating Oxy-Acetylene equipment. Pants should not have cuffs. Always have a fire extinguisher handy when operating Oxy-Acetylene equipment. Always replace cylinder caps when finished using cylinders. Do not rely on the color of the cylinder to identify its contents as some suppliers may use different color codes. Always use the proper regulator for the gas in the cylinder. Always use cylinders in the upright position only. Never store cylinders in temperatures over 130deg. F. Always keep the valve wrench on the Acetylene cylinder valve when in use. Only open valve a maximum of 1 1/2 turns. Do not carry lighters, matches or other flamable objects in pockets when welding or cutting. Always be aware of others around you when using a torch. Becareful not to let welding hoses come into contact with torch flame or sparks from cutting.

Drill Press Safety Guidelines

1. Run drill at correct RPM for diameter of drill bit and material. Ask shop personnel for the correct RPM. 2. Always hold work in a vise or clamp to the drill table. 3. Use a correctly ground drill bit for the material being drilled. Shop personnel can help select the correct bit. 4. Use the proper cutting fluid for the material being drilled. Ask the shop staff about the appropriate fluid for the material you are machining. 5. Remove chips with a brush, never by hand. 6. Ease up on drilling pressure as the drill starts to break through the bottom of the material. 7. Don't use a dull or cracked drill. Inspect the drill before using. 8. Don't drill with too much pressure. 9. Always try to support part on parallels or a backing board when drilling thru material. 10. Never place taper shank tools such as large diameter drills or tapered shank reamers in a drill chuck. Only straight shank tools such as standard drills can be clamped in chucks. 11. Always clean drill shank and/or drill sleeve, and, spindle hole before mounting. 12. Remove taper shank tools from spindle or sleeve with a drill drift and hammer. 13. Never try to loosen the drill chuck while the power is on. 14. Lower the drill spindle close to the table when releasing the drill chuck or taper shank drill to reduce the chance of damage should they fall onto the table. 15. Never clean a machine while it is in motion!! 16. If the drill binds in a hole, stop the machine and turn the spindle backwards by hand to release the bit. 17. When drilling a deep hole withdraw the drill bit frequently to clear chips and lubricate the bit. 18. Always remove the drill chuck key, or, the drill drift from the spindle immediately after

using it. 19. Wear safety eye protection while drilling. 20. Let the spindle stop of its own accord after turning the power off. Never try to stop the spindle with your hand. 21. Plexiglass and other brittle plastics can be difficult to drill. Ask the shop superintendent for advice on drill and coolant selection when drilling these materials.

BENCHWORK SAFETY RULES

Always wear safety goggles. 1. Always chip away from yourself and others. 2. Hold work securely in a bench vise. 3. Saw work close to the vise jaws with normal pressure. 4. Tighten a vise only with hand pressure. 5. Do not use a chisel with mushroomed head. 6. Use file with handle only. 7. If work is dangerous, let others know by a mark or notice. 8. Place sharp or pointed object in a way to avoid injury. 9. Chips and filing must be removed by a brush. 10. Remove all burrs from work before handling. 11. Do not used hammer with loose handle. 12. Never strike two hardened surfaces together. 13. Report accident immediately to persons in charge. 14.
