Sanjeev Maheshwari, Arvind Kumar Pandey and Piush Kumar Singh
AbstractThe paper describes the design and development of compact band pass filter using intergital capacitor. The simulated result of band pass filter using interdigital capacitor with shorted stub shows good response for 3.42 to 6.87 GHz .The corresponding lumped equivalent and transmission-line equivalent circuits are provided for circuit design purpose. Compared with the classical band pass filters, the proposed filter is of a relatively simple in size and compact configuration. The filter has attractive features of wide bandwidth and high rejection ratio. The designed filter can be used at input of uplink and downlink of satellite communication. Index TermsInterdigital Capacitor, compact filter, band pass filter, low pass prototype.

1 INTRODUCTION

atellite communication system has great demand of small, compact, light weight and high performance to control the frequency response at a certain point by providing transmission at frequency within the pass band of filter and attenuation in the stop band of the filter. The main consideration for any filter design is that to achieving low insertion loss and VSWR within the required bandwidth [3]. Microstrip technology has gained popularity in the design of microwave and millimeter wave circuits due to integration capability with the active devices [4]. The use of microstrip technology is an efficient method to attain a good out-of-band response, because the problem comes from the limits imposed by the microstrip technology to achieve very narrow strip widths. Here, the Authors main aim to make size reduction and the improvement in stop band.

2 LOWPASS PROTOTYPE
A low pass prototype filter is in general defined as the low pass filter whose element values are normalized to make the source resistance or conductance equal to one, denoted by g0 = 1, and the cutoff angular frequency to be unity, denoted by !c= 1(rad/s). In this paper Butterworth low pass prototype is used. To determine degree of Butterworth low pass prototype the relation between n and stop band attenuation can be given by the following formula [2] n log (100.1LAS - 1)/2log #s where LAS =minimum stop band attenuation in dB The values of the electrical element of the low pass prototype filter response can be easily realized by the reactive

The low pass prototype is scaled into Band pass filter for 3.42 to 6.87GHz. Then Band pass filter is scaled by amplitude. In this project band pass filter is designed by using interdigital capacitor with shorted stub

3 FILTER DISCRIPTION AND DESINE

For the designed band pass filter lower cut off frequency is 3.42GHz, higher cut off frequency is 6.87GHz ,Bandwidth 3.45GHz., insertion loss less than 2 dB, Return loss greater than 15 dB. The substrate used for the realization of the filter is FR4.The specification for the substrate is, height 1.6mm, relative dielectric constant 4.4 and tangent loss 001.With this specification the interdigital capacitor with shorted stub is used to design band pass filter. The details of used interdigital capacitor are in the Table 1.

5 CONCLUSION
A Band pass filter using interdigital structure is presented. It has a big advantage compared to the conventional filter for same band width and steep characteristic with small size and easy portability. These attractive features of the proposed filter make the strong candidate for application in various integrated microwave circuits. This designed filter can be used at input of uplink and downlink of satellite communication.

The layout of designed filter by using interdigital capacitor is shown in fig.3

4 SIMULATION RESULTS
The designed band pass filter shows band pass range from 3.42GHz to 6.87GHz. The band pass filter is designed by using Zeland software, IE3D. The designed structure is simulated, and the S21 and S11 are found. Fig.4 shows transmission coefficient (S21) and Fig.5 shows reflection coefficient for the designed band pass filter.
