FROM THE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL The Wyndham Way- As we progress quickly through this term, we are continuing to focus throughout the college: at assemblies; in Along the Grapevine (our daily news sheet); and on our information screens across the college- on the ten parts of the Wyndham Way. At Wyndham we take seriously: our motto Working Together to Widen Horizons; our code of conduct; and our statement of agreed values which we call the Wyndham Way. Since this is the last Wyndham Whispers for Term 3, I have included below the full document. It is intended that all people within our Wyndham learning community can adopt each of the ten points and so it applies to staff as well as students. I might add that it applies to me too as the Principal of the College and that I would think that you as a parent, supporter or community member would be comfortable to adopt it. The Wyndham Way More Than an Education Respecting Ourselves Taking Pride in our Appearance Accepting Responsibility for our Actions Participating tho the Best of our Ability Respecting the Rights and Property of Others Caring for our Environment Achieving Goals for a Better Future Promoting a Positive Image of the College This Is the Wyndham Way

Visual Arts HSC 2012 Breakfast Exhibition For yet another year I am delighted to congratulate our Visual Arts staff and students for the wonderful exhibition of works last week. From someone who struggles to even draw, I am always amazed at the talent of our young people. Each year we do so very well in Art Express and I would think that this year will again see Wyndham up in lights. Design & Technology and Industrial Technology This term we also saw the wonderful showcase and talents of our D&T and IT students. Many thanks to all our students and staff for such a wonderful event. Digital Education Revolution- Our Year 12 is the first year to graduate with the Lenovo computers. Most of the students have successfully completed the graduation process required for these computers. I hope our students will utilise this resource well. Farewell to Year 12-2012- The class of 2012 is the first group of students I met when I arrived at the college twelve months ago. As this is the last Whispers for the term, I would like to congratulate our Year 12 students prior to them leaving to undertake their HSC exams in Term 4. I am pleased to be able to say that we had a fantastic group of students (and yes I will say more about that at the Graduation Ceremony). For now, let me say thank you for being such a great year 12 and good luck as you undertake your HSC exams. Karen Smith College Principal

FROM THE YEAR 11 DEPUTY PRINCIPAL As we are at the end of Term 3, this also signifies the completion of Preliminary courses for Year 11 students. The vast majority of students have applied themselves with diligence and determination to successfully complete their courses. For all of those students, the transition to HSC courses in Term 4 will be a straightforward and rewarding experience, and I wish them well in their endeavours. There are, however, some students who have let things slide during the year and they are facing the prospect of an N determination in one or more courses. This means that the requirements of the Preliminary course have not been met and HSC study cannot be attempted in those courses. N award warning letters have already been sent to students who are in this position. From the beginning of the HSC course, everything counts towards the final result. If students have been a bit slack in their approach to their studies, now is the time to turn that around. Completion of all assessment tasks is vital and a determined effort must be made to complete those tasks to the best of their ability. A number of courses have major works as an important part of overall assessment. These major works must begin as soon as possible, so that students can demonstrate their true capabilities. It is Wyndham College policy that students study courses to the value of twelve units. This policy provides students with a safety net for the HSC, where the best ten units are used to calculate the ATAR. It also means that students are fully engaged during their time at Wyndham. I wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday break, before the hard work of the HSC begins. David Macleod-Jones Deputy Principal

FROM THE YEAR 12 DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Year 12 and Preparing for the Higher School Certificate I am very proud of this Year 12 Congratulations to all of you for being so persistent and, in the main, hard working. Keep on task. Some of you may need to recall what I said to you in our conversations together, The Higher School Certificate is attainable but you have to earn it! You will be receiving a lot of advice over the coming weeks from many people about how you should prepare for your exams, none better than the Board of Studies site that refers to preparing for the Higher School Certificate. As for me I will repeat four things that I said to you at the first assembly this year. These are: 1. The Higher School Certificate isnt the most important thing you will do in your life but it should be the most important thing you are doing this year. 2. Allow yourself to be selfish. 3. Revise, revise and revise some more. 4. Dont be afraid to ask your teachers for help. I expect most of you will do very well. You have worked hard and will obtain the results you deserve. Some of you will be disappointed. Disappointment is something we all face and need to handle it as well as we do Success. Why not put yourself first for the next six weeks. Your friends will still be there in six weeks time. There will still be plenty of parties to go to, a lot of shifts to fill at work. Make the next six weeks yours. But be kind and considerate towards your family. Your parents, brothers and sisters are as anxious as you and are genuinely concerned for your wellbeing - but you already know that. Good luck Year 12! Stan Pianko Deputy Principal

UAC NEWS Educational Access Schemes Most institutions participating through UAC have an Educational Access Scheme (EAS) for applicants who, due to circumstances beyond their control or choosing, have experienced long-term educational disadvantage (normally lasting for at least six months), which has seriously affected their educational performance. For 2013 admissions, 24 institutions will consider applications for EAS through UAC. In addition, 14 institutions will consider applicants who have previous or current tertiary study. For more information, read page 2 of the 2013 EAS booklet, which you can download from www.uac.edu.au/eas/ There have been several changes to EAS for 2013 admissions. These include changes to providing supporting documentation, new types of disadvantage and the automatic acknowledgement of students at certain rural schools under the scheme. These and other changes are outlined in detail in the Schools package, which you can download from UACs website at www.uac.edu.au/publications/equity.shtml. Key EAS dates On-time applications close Friday 28 September 2012. Final applications close Friday 4 January 2013. Those who apply for EAS by Friday 30 November 2012 will receive an eligibility letter around the same time as the release of ATARs in late December. Equity Scholarships Applications are now open for Equity Scholarships. Equity Scholarships assist financially disadvantaged students with the costs associated with higher education. Equity Scholarships through UAC comprise: Institution Equity Scholarships (IES) funded by individual institutions. Some IES are funded by donation or sponsorship. Commonwealth Scholarships (CS) for Indigenous applicants funded by the Australian Government. Students can only receive an Equity Scholarship offer from an institution at which theyre currently enrolled and/or to which theyve received an offer of admission. By submitting just one online application through UAC, students will be considered for all available Equity Scholarships for which theyre eligible at the participating institutions. The on-time closing date for applications is Friday 28 September 2012. The final closing date for applications is Friday 30 November 2012. For more information about IES and CS for Indigenous applicants, read the UAC 2013 Equity Scholarships booklet, which you can download from www.uac.edu.au/equity/ All about the ATAR Students will be able to access their ATAR from 9am on Thursday 20 December 2012 on UACs website at www.uac.edu.au They will need their UAC application number or HSC student number and their UAC PIN. Theyll receive written advice of their ATAR from UAC from Friday 21 December 2012. The ATAR Enquiry Centre will be open from 20 to 31 December for students who have questions about their ATAR or UAC application. Details, including hours of operation, will be sent out in early December with the All about your ATAR booklet. All about your ATAR will have all the information students need about the ATAR, from how its calculated and how it relates to HSC marks, to how to read the ATAR Advice Notice. Accessing ATARs Students are reminded that they will need their UAC application number or HSC student number and their UAC PIN to access their ATAR on UACs website. If they dont have their UAC PIN they should call UAC on (02) 9752 0200 to have it re-issued. Students need to keep their UAC PIN in a secure place and make sure they have it before ATARs are released to avoid any delay in accessing their ATAR

Bonus points Universities may allocate bonus points when assessing a students application in a number of different circumstances. These can include performance in specific HSC subjects, living in or attending school in an area defined by the university, and applying for consideration through Educational Access Schemes (EAS). If universities allocate bonus points it doesnt change a students ATAR it changes the students selection rank. For most Year 12 students their selection rank is their ATAR. If a student is allocated bonus points, though, then their selection rank = their ATAR + bonus points. Bonus point schemes are different for each university and sometimes for each course at the same university, so a students selection rank can be different for each course preference they list. You can find details of institution bonus point schemes for undergraduate study at UACs website at www.uac.edu.au/undergraduate/atar/bonuses.shtml or in the UAC 2013 Guide.

The Young Endeavour Youth Scheme A voyage on the tall ship Young Endeavour is a voyage of a lifetime. Cameron Palladino just spent 11 days with 23 other young aussies aged 16-23 years, learning not only how to sail the ship, but how to work together as a team. He was also able to see spectacular parts of Australia that many others never get to see. A Young Endeavour voyage is not a leisurely cruise. Its challenging and exhilarating. The voyage increases self awareness, develops teamwork and leadership skills and creates a strong sense of community responsibility amongst members of the youth crew. The Young Endeavour scheme is run in partnership with the Royal Australian Navy. Camerons voyage was one of 20 voyages each year. To sail in Young Endeavour apply for our ballot (which is like a lottery). The ballot opens twice each year, in January and August.

YOUNG ENDEAVOUR Young Endeavour is a not for profit organisation that provides young Australians aged 16 to 23 with a unique, challenging and inspirational experience at sea aboard the national sail training ship, Young Endeavour. Applications are now being taken for voyages in the first half of 2013. For more information go to: http://www.youngendeavour.gov.au/site

Wyndham College SRC Report

Thursday August 30 2012 Willandra Village Visit

Volume 14 Issue 6

On the 30th of August, the SRC of Wyndham College was given the privilege to visit Willandra Village. On this momentous occasion, the students were given an opportunity to meet with different residents who had a variety of different and unique stories that impacted on the lives of the students in a positive way. It brought great joy to the students seeing elderly people smile despite their pain. Throughout the visit, the students were impressed by the various levels of care available and in particular the new security system to keep their residents safe. This system alerts staff if a resident has had a fall and is unable to help themselves. Towards the end of the SRCs visit to Willandra Village, we were provided lunch, which was enjoyed with some of the residents. Then we were given the opportunity to play Shuffle Board, a game that the residents enjoy playing. In conclusion it was a wonderful and worthwhile day, and the students were enlightened during their visit to Willandra Village. Nathaniel Daines

Creek Cleanup Thursday September 06 2012 On Thursday the 6th of September, students of Wyndham College decided to make a stance against the human impact on the environment and clean up the creek at the back of the school. Many weeks of planning and preparation by the SRC went into this event, including help from the Local Council who supplied the students with tools and equipment to help make this job possible. During the lunch break of just 40 minutes, students scouted the creek for rubbish and filled several bags. Whilst the students were unable to remove all the rubbish in the time available, it is something that the Wyndham College SRC plans to keep up in the future. Thanks to the SRC and other students who participated in this very important venture. Paul Mills.

Excursions Excursions are an important part of the school curriculum. They provide students with a diversity of learning experiences that are very valuable. However, the excursions take considerable time and effort to organise so that they run efficiently. For this reason the school policy is that all excursion money must be paid by the date indicated on the permission note. Students who do not pay by this date will not be able to attend the excursion.
